Industrial organizational psychology is the scientific study of the relationship between man & world of work in the process of making living.
Industrial psychology is one of the most prosperous branch of psychology. In US this is regarded as home of psychology . Industrial psychology may be called applied psychology in the sense that it is mainly concerned with application of the facts and the principle of psychology to the behavior of man working in an industry.
EVOLUTION OF INDUSTRIAL PSYCHOLOGY..
The whole idea about Industrial Psychology emanated from the United States of America particularly during the World Wars when the American government needed a psychological test to select competent military personnel to be used in the wards.

Personnel Psychology is concerned with the whole issue of making use of psychological test to recruit, select and place workers in organization. It also uses psychological test to promote and train workers in industries and organizations.
This branch of industrial psychology is interested in dealing with myriad of human problems in organizations. Such problems range from problem of hostile interpersonal relationship among workers and between workers and management; problem of leadership; problem of communication; problem of working condition; problem of job dissatisfaction and lack of motivation; problem of low morale, problem of reward and incentives, etc.
Organizational psychology appears to be the most important of all sub-field of industrial psychology because of vast area of human problems it covers. This explains why people sometimes use the two concepts of industrial psychology and organizational interchangeably. Though this usage is erroneous because there is more to industrial psychology than organizational psychology.
This has to do with the method and average worker can employ to operated an equipment, perform specific work without necessarily affecting adversely the physical and mental structures of the individuals concerned. In other words, engineering psychology deals with problems of safety in organization, problems of equipment design and operation, etc.
In modern days, machines of various shapes and sizes are used in industries to perform one task or the other. The machines are of course, handled by man. Therefore, it becomes imperative for engineering psychologist to come in and devise a means of minimizing if not totally eradicating all forms of industrial accidents and deformity to which
machine operators are pruned
This branch of industrial psychology deals with the proper and appropriate way of advertising goods and services such that consumers majority of whom are workers are not unduly exploited, manipulated and extorted through false demonstration, propaganda, jingles, etc.
Consumer Psychology is quite important most especially when one considers places like the United States of America where about 90% of the consumers are paid or salary earners. Consumer Psychology also addresses the issue of consumer welfare and well-being through the conduct of market research, product research and research on advertisement at regular intervals.
This branch helps to develop management abilities in people in such a way that they will be able to and capable of managing resources effectively.
Managerial Psychology promotes managerial efficiency and effectiveness. It also ensures cordial peaceful management labour relations otherwise known as Industrial Relations.
Managers, essentially manage resources through the process of planning, organizing, mobilizing, designing, implementing and evaluating. To perform these functions very well, the service of Managerial Psychology is needed.
It is the responsibility of environmental psychologist to ensure that all these issues are adequately taken care of perhaps as stated in the Factory Act of the country concerned.
