Green computing

• green computing is "the study and practice of

designing, manufacturing, using, and
disposing of computers, servers, and
associated subsystems—such as monitors,
printers, storage devices, and networking and
communications systems—efficiently and
effectively with minimal or no impact on the
environment.
Objective
• The goals of green computing are similar
to green chemistry; reduce the use of
hazardous materials, maximize energy
efficiency during the product's lifetime, and
promote
the recyclability or biodegradability of defunct
products and factory waste.
Background
• In 1992, the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency launched Energy Star, a voluntary
labeling program which is designed to
promote and recognize energy-efficiency in
monitors, climate control equipment, and
other technologies.
Why is Green Computing Important?
• Green computing benefits the environment.
Reduced energy usage from green computing
techniques translates into lower carbon dioxide
emissions, stemming from a reduction in the fossil
fuel used in power plants and transportation.
Conserving resources means less energy is required
to produce, use, and dispose of products. Put
simply, saving energy and resources saves money.
Types
•  System-Wide Green Computing
• Individual Green Computing
• System-Wide and Individual Green
Computing
 System-Wide Green Computing
• Basically, cloud computing eliminates the
need for hardware like servers. Also known as
virtualization, cloud computing replaces
hardware with "virtual" servers or servers in
"the cloud.“
• Essentially, cloud computing allows companies
to reduce their need for big, bulky, energy-
consuming servers by relocating them on the
Internet.
Individual Green Computing
• There are many other green computing
techniques at the personal computer level. For
instance, power management can be an easy
and effective means of saving green while
conserving energy. While many operating
systems come with power-saving settings.
System-Wide and Individual Green Computing
• Green computing initiatives can reap savings
in both big and small ways. Technologies that
save paper, like email, can have a huge impact
on costs as well as the environment. As
companies and employees develop methods
and habits of conservation, simple practices
like emailing memos or printing in smaller
fonts can bring instant results.
INITIATIVES FOR GREEN COMPUTING

• Green computing, the study and practice of

efficient and eco-friendly computing
resources, is now under the attention of not
only environmental organizations, but also
businesses from other industries.
Green technology

• The field of "green technology " encompasses

a broad range of subjects — from new energy-
generation techniques to the study of
advanced materials to be used in our daily life.
• Green technology focuses on reducing the
environmental impact of industrial processes
and innovative technologies caused by the
Earth’s growing population.
