POLLUTION

By: Christopher Molina

What does it really mean?
Pollution is the name of a presence in or introduction into a type of environment of a substance or thing that has harmful or poisonous effects.
Air pollution is caused by: the chemicals released by the factories, car, etc. The two main categories of water pollution. The first type of pollution is called Point source pollution such as sewage pipes that empty polluted water into the river and farmland. The second type is called Non-point source pollution is pollution that comes from large areas like gasoline and other dirt from highways that go into the lakes, streams and rivers.

The amount of fuels burnt causes massive increase of carbon dioxide resulting in global warming, which causes Deforestation.

CFCs in the atmosphere forming a hole and making more uv rays to come to earth .

How does Pollution effect your Health?
Air pollution can affect our health in many ways with both short and long term effects. Some individuals are much more sensitive to pollutants than others. Young children and elderly people often suffer more from the effects of air pollution. People with health problems such as asthma, heart and lung disease may also suffer more when the air is polluted. The extent to which an individual is harmed by air pollution usually depends on the total exposure to the damaging chemicals, the duration of exposure and the concentration of the chemicals must be taken into account.

"Everyone has some amount of dioxin in his or her body, and the average level is already high enough to endanger health." --Lois Gibbs

What is being done to reduce air pollution?
The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company has established GRO1000, a commitment to install 1,000 gardens and green spaces in the United States and select international sites by 2018. This year's crop of Scotts-Miracle Gro's community gardens is already underway with major initiatives taking place during the Great American Cleanup. students and other volunteers together at Pro-Vision, a middle school, to create an urban farm consisting of a vegetable garden, an herb garden, and two fruit orchards at the Great American Cleanup national kickoff event in Houston. During their 400 volunteer hours, 73 trees were planted along with 1,920 vegetable and herb plants.

Animals that have suffered from Pollution
Pollution has been affecting the reproducing organs of fish, alligators and polar bears stopping them from making babies. Species living in the water are strongly harmed because water spreads pollution faster than land, and because we often dump our pollution into the water. Global Warming will affect all species on Earth to extinction and some species will succeed in warmer climates many will die.

A few green tips
Don't get bottled water - Instead of bottled water get a reusable container to carry water. Also you can get a filter to make your home tap taste more like bottled water. It is definitely more cost efficient. Use Both Sides of Paper - if you have a printer with a double sided print option use it. You will save half of the amount of paper you would have normally used

Turn the water off when you brush - Your parents have said this before, now I say it. You will save 4 gallons of water doing this alone.

Change to Fluorescent Bulbs - If every house in the United States changed all of the light bulbs in their house, that would be equivalent to taking one million cars off the streets.

Shorten your shower - Every minute you cut from your shower is roughly 5 gallons of water. The less time your shower takes, the lower your impact on the environment.

Recycle Glass - If you do not recycle this, it will take a million years to decompose.
