For The World, Against Worldliness

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son” John 3:16 “Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of this world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore desires to be a friend of the world is an enemy of God.” James 4:4

In But Not Of The World
“I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.” John 17:14-16

Housemate From Hell
Have you met someone staying in the same house with you, who knows he’d be moving out in a month’s time and acts like a jerk? Refuses to take out garbage, shun duty to clean the toilet, rude to others, play his music loud etc. Titanic: “It’s gonna sink anyway mentality”?

Who’s Our Neighbor?
The most discussed topic in Malaysian public life, explored by academics, filmmakers, politicians and newspaper editors alike… always current, potentially explosive, but rarely addressed in sermons: Racial Integration. After 50 years merdeka, we are ‘race first, Malaysian second’

Neither Jew Nor Gentile
Since reconciliation is at the heart of the gospel, and since the gospel transcends the barriers of race, ethnicity and culture, and since the church is the most inclusive community on earth, the local church is a community of hope in a fragmented world. Speak on behalf of the others as well (Are we guilty of tribalism? Tidak apathy?)

Christ Among Other Gods
“Witness does not exclude dialogue but invites it… dialogue does not exclude witness but extends and deepens it.” (Bosch, mission thinker) We should abandon a ‘ghetto’ mentality and actively pursue to be with the other, collaborate with them in action (overcoming racism, AIDS, abortion and poverty) and converse to understand and be understood

Mental Suicide?
“Faith Is Believing In What You Know Ain’t True” Oscar Wilde “Faith is not a substitute for knowledge, but the response to it.” Knowledge: Informed Mind Wisdom: Artful Method Character: Winsome Manner

Informed And Winsome
Equip people to be winsome, informed and respectful ambassadors for Christ Keith Green: “I think the world is completely sick to its stomach with our sayings and ‘witnessing tools.’ It’s time for us to be expressing the truth with our lives, and then the whole truth of God with our lips!”

Sick Of Marketing Gimmicks?
• Lives & Words: Christians have to wrap themselves up in the good news of Jesus Christ, live that mystery together in the fellowship of the church, and give the world something worth seeing. And they have to explain it in the form of sound doctrine, explaining biblical truth, making the message clear as only words can. There is a strong temptation these days to seek refuge in the claim that “my life is my testimony,” as if preaching is replaced. But the gospel is wordy, just as it is lifey. It just isn’t very bumper stickery." Fred Sanders, Scriptorium Daily

The heart is what The brain is what we use for religion we use for science

Whose Work Is “Spiritual”?

Hierarchy of Spiritual Jobs…

Empowering Front-Line Ministry
Laypeople in every facet of life – media, politics, business, education and others – should be enabled to challenge the prevailing assumptions of society in light of the gospel. Theology should not be reserved for pastors and scholars only! (Newbigin)

Practical Stuffs: Integration
• Medical Faculty – Is mercy-killing, stem cell research, abortion, cloning ethical? • Law – It’s legal, but is it just? Social contract? • Literature – Should we seek the author’s original intent of writing? Reader response? • Science – What’s Its Method and Limits? How Shall We Consider Macro-evolution? • Business/Economics – Is capitalism just? Do corporations have moral duty or only profit? • Computer – What are the human/relational aspects in software engineering?

The Earth Is The Lord’s
• Transforming our culture and society is not just a result of evangelism or just a means of evangelism. • ‘Inseparable elements in Christ’s rule that embraces all of creation’. • Abraham Kuyper: There is no sphere of life that is not subject to the sovereignty of Jesus Christ. • If Christ is not the Lord of all, He is not Lord at all

1) At Jacob's well, Jesus reached across racial, religious and gender barriers in a simple conversation with the Samaritan woman. How shall I follow Christ humbly and boldly in doing the same here in Malaysia? 2) What are the subjects you study in college/school? What does that field of study say about what is true, good and beautiful? For example, if I’m a Christian counselor, how would I see moral behaviors as determined by genes? If I'm a businessperson, how shall I look at monetary profits? 3) An ambassador for Christ should be equipped in the area of knowledge, wisdom and character. Which area do you feel needs to be strengthened further? Why and how would that be helpful in your witness?
