Roles
Interviewer - Interview the targeted people the questions that we have came up with. Photographer - Film the process of the interview Collating the result - Collate the result that we received from the interviewee.

Chosen concepts

Obedience
There is a sign written Please do not sit on the steps in the middle and side of the stairs. Therefore we want to see if people actually follow what the sign says.

Gender & Influence

We want to see if gender will affect people accepting or rejecting to the interview and whether a male or female is likely to sit on the steps.

Minority Influence
We want to see if the number of people sitting down will influence peoples decision to sit down.

Self-Esteem
The reaction of people after interview was done (E.G some people stood up after the interview to make themselves feel better)

Experiment
[ There is a sign written Please do not sit on the steps in the middle and side of the stairs. ] 1st) To approach the people that ignore the sign and sat on the steps. 2nd) Ask them the surveyed question that we have came up with 3rd) Report the result and collate in the end of the experiment.

Survey Questions
Did you see the sign? If you saw, why did you not follow the instructions? If no one was sitting here before you, will you still sit?

About our experiment

Objective: To test about the various concept that we have chosen in the previous slides Duration: 2 hours(10am-12noon) Hypothesis: The sign help discourage people from sitting on the steps. Target group: Teenager , Adults (age 15-45) -Both male and female -Anyone that sat or stood around the steps - Most of them should understand the words that is stated on the sign. Place: Orchard Mrt Station
-

Is crowded most of the time hence making it easier and more accurate for our experiment.

Independent variable:
The interviewer who went to report changes throughout the interviewing process. [ Female and Male ]

Dependent variable:
Reaction of the interviewee during and after the interview

Did you see the sign?

Response of 24 people surveyed
2 3 Rejected Yes No Unclear answer

12 7

If you saw, why did you not follow the instructions?

Saw Wants to sit(1) No other place to sit(2) Did not see If they saw, they will not sit(9)(obedience) Not sit: Unsightly(1) Not sit: Dirty(1)

Obedience

Obedience is demonstrated here as it is the main excuse people used to justify their sitting on the steps. Shows that they will obey if they saw the sign.

If no one was sitting here before you, will you still sit?
Explains minority influence First to sit down(3) (8) Yes(5) No(8) Might sit(3) Sit only if shes tired Sit because her leg is pain

Minority influence
Minority influence is tested here to see if the presence of another person/people already sitting will influence their decision of sitting. No clear result to support minority influence

Gender & Influence

Ask => Male Female Male 6 2 TOTAL 8 Female 6 10 16

3 that got rejected were female=>female More females sat on the steps than males (50% more)

Self-esteem
Many of the people surveyed immediately stood up when asked the questions They knew they did something wrong, tried to cover up by saying they did not see the notice even if they saw it. Or, after the survey, they just walked away or stood there.

Self-esteem

Also, when being asked if they saw the sign, many said they didnt see it In our opinion, -People said they didnt see the sign as a way to cover up what they had done. -Aware that they are wrong

Special addition
Sometimes, one concept may link to another. In this case, the concept of Reciprocity Norm was carried out:

y A lady that was interviewed by Chao Wei

asked to borrow his handphone to call her daughter some time later. y Lady expected Chao Wei to return a favor after helping him with the survey.

Hypothesis The sign helps discourage people from sitting on the steps. The sign does not help discourage people from sitting on the steps. Further actions must be taken to stop this problem.

What have we learned? -People are unaware of their surroundings -People know that doing something are wrong, but they just do them. -Language barrier

Conclusion

Different -[Print out different text size] for the notice and see if people pay more attention to the sign. -[Take away the sign] see if anybody will be sitting on the steps. Improvement -[Wear formal clothing] so as to look more professional and use [printed question]and answer when doing the interview.

The End
Thank You For Your Kind Attention (:
