NETWORK. TYPES OF NETWORK CONNECTING DEVICES. NETWORK TOPOLOGY. TYPE OF NETWORK TOPOLOGY.

SOME DEFINATIONS.
What is network?
An infrastructure that allows computers to communicate with each other For sharing s/w and h/w resources

What is network topology?
Network topology specifically refers to the physical layout of the network, specially the location of the computers

What is protocol?
Protocol is a set of rules that governs the communications

CONNECTING DEVICES.
Repeater. Hub. Router. Brouter. Switch.

TYPES OF NETWORK.
LAN (LOCAL AREA NETWORK) MAN (METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK) WAN (WIDE AREA NETWORK)

MESH TOPOLOGY. RING TOPOLOGY. STAR TOPOLOGY. BUS TOPOLOGY. TREE TOPOLOGY. HYBRID TOPOLOGY

MESH TOPOLOGY.
ADVANTAGES. PRIVACY AND SECURITY EASY FAULT IDENTIFICATION &ISOLATION ROBUST NO TRAFFIC PROBLEMS DISADVANTAGES. MORE CABLES REQUIRED MORE SPACE CONSUMPTION EXPENSIVE HARDWARE DIFFICULT INSTALLATION & CONFIGURATION

STAR TOPOLOGY.
ADVANTAGES.
EASY TO INSTALL & WIRE SECURITY CAN BE IMPLEMENTED IN THE HUB/SWITCH EASY TO DETECT FAULTS & TO REMOVE PARTS

No Collision DISADVANTAGES.
REQUIRES MORE CABLE LENGTH THAN A LINEAR TOPOLOGY MORE EXPENSIVE IF THE HUB OR CONCENTRATOR FAILS THE NODES ATTACHED ARE DISABLED

BUS TOPOLOGY.
ADVANTAGE Easy to connect computer or peripheral to a linear bus Requires less cable length than a star topology. If one computer fails no effect on whole network

DISADVANTAGE

‡ ‡ ‡ ‡

Entire network shuts down if there is a break in the main cable Terminators are required at both ends of the backbone cable Difficult to identify the problem if the entire network shuts down High Possibility Collision

RING TOPOLOGY.

every computer between the sender and recipient therefore, this makes it slower Transmission of data is relatively simple as the nodes fail then in one direction If any of packets travel the ring only. is broken and data cannot be transmitted successfully It is difficult to troubleshoot the ring

DISADVANTAGES. ADVANTAGES. Data packets No collision must pass through

TREE TOPOLOGY.
ADVANTAGES.
Tree Topology is supported by many network vendors ad even hardware vendors Best topology for branched out networks.

DISADVANTAGES.

If trunk that has to fail then the entire network would fail. It is depended on the trunk which is the main backbone of the network. Complicated.

HYBRID TOPOLOGY.
ADVANTAGES.

Reliable Effective. Flexible

. DISADVANTAGES.

Cost and the support require to maintain them. Thus today network topology is commonly a clusters of Ethernet. Very few if any exists like Token ring, Serial loop.
