What is power plant ? Why we need power plant?
CLASSIFICATION OF POWERPLANT Power plants using nonrenewable sources of energy Nuclear(Atomic) power plant Steam power plant Diesel power plant Gas power plant Power plants using renewable sources of energy Hydro electric ( Hydel ) power plant Solar thermal power plant Wave power plant Tidal power plant Geothermal power plant Bio-mass power plant Ocean thermal power plant .
THERMAL POWER PLANT • A system of equipment which converts the heat energy available into electrical energy is called thermal power plant .
Boiler 4.Transformers .MAIN COMPONENTS OF THE PLANT ARE: 1.Stoker 3.Steam turbine 5.Generator 7.Condenser 6.Coal conveyor 2.
Principle of thermal power plant .
• Coal conveyor : This is a belt type of arrangement. This stoker is a mechanical device for feeding coal to a furnace. • Stoker : The coal which is brought near by boiler has to put in boiler furnace for combustion. With this coal is transported from coal storage place in power plant to the place near by boiler. • Boiler : Boiler is an enclosed vessel in which water is heated and circulated until the water is turned in to steam at the required pressure. .
Steam Boilers .
. otherwise known as condensate.• Steamturbine:A steam turbine is a mechanical device that extracts thermal energy from pressurized steam. and converts it into rotary motion • Condenser: A condenser is a heat exchangers which convert steam from turbine into water. The purpose is to condense the outlet (or exhaust) steam from steam turbine to obtain maximum efficiency and also to get the condensed steam in the form of pure water.
Uses for transformers include reducing the line voltage to operate low-voltage devices (doorbells or toy electric trains) and raising the voltage from electric generators so that electric power can be transmitted over long distances. either increasing (stepping up) or reducing (stepping down) the voltage.Generator: An alternator is an electro mechanical device that converts mechanical energy to alternating current electrical energy. Transformer: It is a device that transfers electric energy from one alternating-current circuit to one or more other circuits. .
OVERVIEW OF PLANT .

Installation time required is less.ADVANTAGES OF THERMAL POWER PLANT The steam power plant can be located nearer to the power requirement place. so the cost of transmission and losses due to transmission are reduce. Less skilled workers are needed for optimum plant operation . The power production not depends on nature’s mercy.
Cost of power generation is high.DIS-ADVANTAGES OF STEAM POWER PLANT Life and efficiency of the plant is less compared to hydel power plant The fuel used in the power plant is fossil fuel(coal). . Smoke produced by burning the fuel causes air pollution. it may be exhausted after some time.
