Philippines eyes claim on West Palawan Region

At the heels of the country's claim over the resource-rich undersea land "Benham Rise", the government is submitting another territorial claim before the United Nations. Speaking to ANC's Strictly Politics, Environment Secretary Ramon Paje said the government is eyeing the West Palawan Region, which is located in the south of the disputed Spratlys Island. Paje said other countries like Indonesia and Vietnam have made a claim on the area but the Philippines has prior right to the territory based on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Seas (UNCLOS). Asked if the government would consider a joint exploration of the West Palawan area, the environment chief said: "It's defined also in UNCLOS that when your 200 miles overlaps with the 200 miles of Indonesia, for example -- it's being done now in southern part of Philippines -- the guidelines says we can co-manage it." "We have 2 options: co-manage the resource or we compute the overlap and divide it into two," he added.

Undefeated fighter eyed for Donaire

WBO and WBC bantamweight champion Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire may be defending his titles against an undefeated Argentinian fighter, according to RingTV.com. Omar Narvaez (35-0, with 23 knockouts), is currently the WBOs junior bantamweight titlist. He is being strongly considered as Donaires next opponent. If Narvaez is chosen, he will be making his bantamweight debut against the champion on October 22 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. RingTV.com reported that Narvaez will be a challenge for Donaire because of the Argentinians experience and southpaw stance. However, his age and modest punching power will be disadvantageous against the Filipino champion. Donaire has not fought since February, when he scored a spectacular 2nd round knockout against Fernando Montiel.

WEATHER
Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms becoming cloudy with widespread rains over Palawan. The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms mostly in the afternoon or evening. Light to moderate winds blowing from the Northeast to Southeast will prevail over Northern and Central Luzon and coming from the Northeast over Southern Luzon and Visayas. Light northeasterly and variable winds will prevail over Mindanao. The coastal waters throughout the archipelago will be slight to moderate.
