All material in this lecture is copyrighted to the autors and creators of the pictures and films. And the lecture is copyrighted to Rickard Stampe Sderstrm. You may freely use it as a presentation but not printing it in a digital or analog form.
Language
Simulation of a two-giro gravity attitude control system (E.E Zajac 1963) to Avatar (James Cameron, 2009)
The course
The exam: To model, texture, animate and render a unique figurative 3D-model from an existing or self made production design (max 1 min). Furthermore reflect and describe the work process you had in an 10 page rapport with text and pictures (max 10 A4 pages). The rapport shall also relate the production you made to a product and place in in an historical context. Mandatory activites during class: - Present your project to the group in max 10 minutes. - Hand in your project to me for evaluation before writing the exam. Activities outside class: - Group presentation. - Tutorial making in Maya.
Your expectations?
Your prior experience? Why 3D-animation? How will you learn this?
Introduction
- What is 3D? And what is Computer Graphics? CG? CGI? - In danish "Computer Grafik", "Computer animation", "3D-animation" - 3D-animation is a tool for visualizations, film, computer games, production design, architecture etc.
Introduction
- What is animation? - a) a motion picture made by photographing successive positions of inanimate objects (as puppets or mechanical parts). b) Animated Cartoon, a motion picture made from a series of drawings simulating motion by means of slight progressive changes. (Webster) - "animare" - "to give life to" - "Animation is not the art of drawings that move, but rather the art of movement that are drawn. What happens between each frame is more importent than what happens on each frame" (Norman McClaren)
Introduction
Introduction
- Digital teknik vs analog teknik - From the 1960 - now. - Moors Law states that " The Number of transitors that can be places inexpensively on an intergrated circuit doubles approximately every two years"
Introduction
Introduction
- Realism in computer graphics - photo realism / visual realism - Two traditions (a style of painting) vs Computer Graphics
- The quest for photo realism from the 1960 - now.
Introduction
- The Uncanny valley is theory developed by professor Masahiro Moro for measuring realism in robot technology also applied to computer graphics to measure photo realism.

Introduction
The "Story" - The story of Red Riding Hood. - The story of an object. - The story of a texture. - The story of a walk. - The "Never Ending Story".

- Team work vs one person. - Production process (Game or Film). - Visual Style in CGI.
Visual Styles in CG
What is a visual style and how is defining it? Why do you need a "style"? At least six visual styles:
-Photo realistic - Hyper realistic - Stylistic - Simple - Graphic - Surrealistic (Fantastic / photo surrealistic)
