Newspaper a reading material for


news stories that gives facts, opinions, arguments, and interpretations about the following subjects; a. government/politics b. economics c. weather d. health e. sports f. movies g. business

Types of Newspaper 1. Broadsheet a big newspaper and is generally national, which means a newspaper for nationwide circulation. 2. Tabloid half the size of a broadsheet and one that circulates as local or community newspaper.

In the Front Page 1.1 Masthead nameplate of the newspaper 1.2 Folio indicates date, and city or province where its published volume number, no. of sections and pages price of the newspaper year it was founded 1.3 Edition indicates whether the newspaper is Morning Edition, Afternoon Edition, Evening Edition, or City Edition, Provincial Edition, or

1.4 Ears spaces or boxes beside the nameplate devoted for the weather report or titles of inside stories or advertisement. 1.5 Headlines umbrella (skyline), or major story of the news. a. major story headline is the title of the major news story of the day (banner or streamer of the newspaper). b. side bar headline is the title of a side major news story. c. other news stories headlines are the headlines of the other new stories other than the major story.

d. A teaser is also called a kicker. This comes before any headline and this is used to present any additional information to make the headline clear. e. The deck is as secondary headline, appearing between any headline and the story of said headline. f. Byline is the writer of the news. g. Dateline is the date and place of origin of the news. h. Lead is generally the summary of the news story given in the first paragraph. It gives 5Ws and 1H.

i. Major News Story is the most important story for the editor. j. Side Bar is a side story of one story that is carried by the paper. k. Cut is the picture used to make the news more visible to the readers. It can be found on all pages of the newspaper. l. Cutline is the caption of the cut.

2. In the Inside Pages It may contain also a deck, kicker, byline, dateline, lead, side bar, cut and cutline. 3. In an Editorial Page It may contain the following; a. Editorial is the newspapers opinion on an issue b. Editorial Cartoon gives the newspapers interpretation on an issue, presented in a caricature. c. Editorial Box is a portion on the page where the editorial board is listed.

d. Columns are the titles of the regular spaces of columnists in the newspaper. e. Column Articles are articles of opinions, explanations, or interpretations of issues by columnists.

SCANNING A NEWSPAPER
- Doing this means knowing first what information you want to discover from the newspaper. Then knowing the part of the newspaper that will give you this information.

SKIMMING A NEWSPAPER
- doing this means previewing, overviewing and surveying a newspaper. 1. To Preview a. read the title or name b. read the place and date of publication c. read the Editorial Box (Editorial Board)

2. To Overview a. determine the sections b. read the title of each section c. read the editor of each section d. read the title of the different columns e. read the columnist of each column 3. To Survey a. read the headlines on the front page and the inside pages b. determine the headline stories c. determine the subject of the editorial/column articles. d. determine the subject of other parts of the newspaper
