Cerebrovascular Accident

The sudden death of some brain cells due to lack of oxygen when the blood flow to the brain is impaired by blockage or rupture of an artery to the brain. A cerebrovascular accident is also called CVA, brain attack, cerebral infarction or stroke.

If blood flow is stopped for longer than a few seconds. the brain cannot get blood and oxygen. .Causes: A stroke happens when blood flow to a part of the brain is interrupted because a blood vessel in the brain is blocked or bursts open. causing permanent damage. Brain cells can die.

There are two major types of stroke: .ischemic stroke -hemorrhagic stroke .

It causes an embolic stroke. .occurs when a blood vessel that supplies blood to the brain is blocked by a blood clot. and travel up to the brain to block a smaller artery.

HEMORRHAGIC STROKE . The flow of blood that occurs after the blood vessel ruptures damages brain cells. .occurs when a blood vessel in part of the brain becomes weak and bursts open. causing blood to leak into the brain.

Wakes you up from sleep . or cough .Gets worse when you change positions or when you bend. especially if the stroke is caused by bleeding in the brain. .Starts suddenly and may be severe .Symptoms A headache may occur. strain.Occurs when lying flat .

Risk Factors: .Diabetes mellitus – accelerated degeneration of small blood vessel . .Polycythemia – a raised level of red cells in the blood.Smoking – increase the risk ofhypertension .Age .High blood pressure – weakens the walls of arteries .Hyperlipidemia – high level of fatty substances in the blood .Atherosclerosis – narrowed artery channels .Heart disease – cause blot clot in the heart that may break off and migrate to the brain. .
