VOLTA CELL
. VOLTA CELL
VOLTA CELL:-is one of the electrochemical cell.It was discovered by
Volta scientist in 1796.
CONSTRUCTION: Volta cell is consisted of a glass vessel.
It contains dilute sulphuric acid as an electrolyte. There are two metal rods
which act as electrodes. one electrode is made up of copper and second

electrode is made up of zinc

metal. copper electrode acts as a positive electrode where as zinc
electrode acts as negative electrode.
WORKING:-When two electrodes are connected by
copper wire, there is a reaction between acid and metal plates.
As a result electrons move from zinc plate to copper plate
through connecting wire.Hydogen gas is evolved which
carries charge towards copper plate and gets deposited
there after discharging.
SHORTCOMINGS:-There are some shortcomings in
Volta cellbecauseof which it is not considered as a very good
source of energy.
These are discussed as below:-
1.Hydrogen is a bad conductor of current that's why flow
of current does not remain same throughout and continuity
also breaks during current flow.
2.Sulphuric Acid is used in Volta Cell and due to it, its shifting
DRY CELL
DRY CELL:-
CONSTRUCTION:-There is a cylindrical Zinc covering
outside the dry cell. This electrode acts as a negative electrode.
There is a paste of Ammonium Chloride inside the cell which acts as an
electrolyte.
Inside the cell, there is Manganese Dioxide which contains rod
of carbon. There is metal cap outside the rod. This carbon rod acts
as a positive electrode. Voltage of dry cell is 1.5 volts.
WORKING OF DRY CELL:-When positive and negative electrodes
are connected together, there is a reaction between Zinc and
Ammonium Chloride. As a result electrons move from Zinc to Carbon.
Thus current flows from Zinc to Carbon. But current flow continues
only until Zinc and Carbon rod are connected together.
ADVANTAGES OF DRY CELL:-It is used in Radio, TV, Toys and Watches.
Moreover because of its small size and light weight, its shifting from one place
to other is very easy.
DANIEL CELL
DENIEL CELL

DANIEL CELL:-Daniel Cell was discovered by J.F.Daniel.

CONSTRUCTION:-There is a glass vessel in Daniel cell.
It is divided into two parts by a porous plate.
One portion contains Zinc Sulphate and second portion
contains Copper Sulphate. These two solutions act as electrolyte.
Zinc rod is placed in Zinc Sulphate solution and a copper rod
is placed in Copper Sulphate solution.Zinc rod acts as negative
electrode whereas copper electrode acts as positive electrode.
WORKING:-The two electrodes are connected by a wire and
current starts flowing after their interconnection. It is
considered as a better source of energy than Volta cell
because of continuity of current. But there are some
shortcomings also as described below:-
SHORTCOMINGS:-1.There is some mixing of Copper Sulphate
and Sulphuric Acid solution due to porous nature of partion
.As a result ,reaction occurs among Zinc, Copper and Sulphuric acid
and it leads to wastage of energy. To overcome above shortcoming,
dry cell was discovered.
BUTTON CELL

BUTTON CELL:-In the modern world ,electronic devices

are very sleek and handy. So comparatively big sized dry cells
cannot be used in devices like watches, calculators and toys.
In stead of it, small sized Button Cells are used which can be
used for a long time. They are named as BUTTON CELLS
because there size is approximately equal to button.
TYPES:-Mostly there are following two types of button cell:-
1.MERCURY OXIDE BUTTON CELLS:-In this cell Mercuric Oxide
acts as a cathode whereas Zinc acts as anode.
2.SILVER OXIDE CELL:-In this cell Silver Oxide acts as a cathode
whereas Zinc acts as anode. In addition to above mentioned Button
cells,Nickle-Cadmium and Lithium-Manganese button cells are also
used.
