A MELODY is a line of single tones that moves downward…

A MELODY is a line of single tones that sometimes repeat.

Simply put, a MELODY is the main part of a song you sing.

How tones move, combined with rhythm, makes one melody different from another.

PHRASES
• Songs are put together by combining smaller sections with one another, called PHRASES. • PHRASES are musical ideas. • A PHRASE is to a song like a sentence is to a paragraph.

A phrase can be… • Long • Short • Complete • Or Incomplete.

Sometimes PHRASES are marked with a “rainbow” line called a PHRASE MARKING. PHRASE MARKINGS are used to identify PHRASES in a song.

The way tones move gives a melody its shape, or CONTOUR.

MELODIC CONTOURS
Can be “JAGGED” (leaps and skips)…

can be “SMOOTH” (steps).

CADENCES
• It is natural to take breaths at the end of each PHRASE. • The end of PHRASES are called CADENCES. • CADENCES are points of momentary rest at the end of a PHRASE.

Types of CADENCES
• One type of CADENCE is called a WEAK CADENCE. • WEAK CADENCES gives an unfinished feeling, as though there is more music to come. Click here to Listen to this example
