What is child labour?


We want to stop work that: Is mentally, physically, socially or morally dangerous and harmful to children. Interferes with their schooling. In its most extreme forms, it involves ,children are being separated from their families, exposed to serious dangers .

Where do child labourers live


61% in Asia, 32% in Africa, and 7% in Latin America, 1% in US, Canada, Europe and other wealthy nations In Asia, 22% of the workforce is children. In Africa, one child in three is at work, and in Latin America, one child in five works.

How can ordinary people help reduce child labour?


Learn about the issue. Support organizations that are raising awareness. To provide direct help to individual children.

What are sulotuons to child labour?


Education that helps children learn skills that will help them earn a living. Social services that help children and families survive crises, such as disease, or loss of home and shelter. Family control of fertility so that families are not burdened by children

Achievements: The MV Foundation has achieved significant successes in the ten or so years of its existence in the area of child labour. Its area of operation has expanded from 3 villages in 1991 to more than 500 villages in 1999. Over 10,000 youth volunteers contribute to the program today. 13

85 villages have been made child labour free. In more than 400 villages all children below the age of 11 years are in formal schools. Bridge Course Camps covering 25,000 children from 1986 to 1999. Over 2300 education activists participate in the program .

More than 4000 bonded labourers have been released. Nearly 5000 adolescent girls have accessed schools through the programme. A forum of government teachers with strength of 1300 teachers has been formed to carry on the campaign against child labour.

Highlights: Of the 2,00,000 labour force in the matchbox industry, experts claim that 35% are children below the age of 14. They are made to work over twelve hours a day, beginning work at around 4 am. According to a recent report by the ILO almost 4,20,000 children are employed in the carpet industry of India.

According to recent estimates almost 60,000 children are employed in the glass and bangle industry and are made to work under extreme conditions of excessive heat. According to a recent ILO report about 80% child labourers in India are employed in the agriculture sector. The children are generally sold to the rich moneylenders to whom borrowed money cannot be returned.

Our view: We just feel that all kids should have time to be kids. We don't think the work is the problem, the parents of the children are the problem. Any child that has a lack of parenting is going to grow up with problems.
