Indian Passenger Vehicles - Overview
It was 1900 when the first car found its way to the Indian subcontinent. Since then the Indian passenger vehicle industry has seen a sea change. With HM establishing the first automobile factory way back in 1948, the Indian passenger vehicle industry was for long dominated by Ambassadors and the Premier Padmini’s. Then in the year 1985, following the liberalization, the Govt of India in collaboration with Suzuki motor corpn of Japan formed Maruti Suzuki ; a powerful alliance which would change the face of the Indian roads. Today, there are more than 10 manufacturers with over 50 different models that ply on Indian roads today. Global players have either entered or are eyeing India as a strategic target for future development Maruti Suzuki is the market leader, with Hyundai and Tata Motors forming the major players.
