Abraham Maslow

Biography
Abraham Harold Maslow was born in April 1, of 1908 in Brooklyn. At first, Abraham enrolled in the City College of New York. However, later he transferred to Cornell, then back to CCNY. After he married his first cousin, Bertha Maslow, he moved to Wisconsin to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he received his doctorate in psychology in 1934. In 1951, Maslow became the chairman of the psychology department at Brandeis University, where he began his theoretical work. He retired to California, where he died of a heart attack in 1970, aged 62, after years of ill health.

Abraham Maslow Hierarchy of Needs
• Maslow suggested that there are five sets of goals which may be called basics needs. • These are: • Physiological • Safety and Security • Love and Belongings • Esteem • Self actualization or Self fulfillment He arranged these in the order of importance.

• This need is the most important according to Maslow hierarchy of needs • These needs include the need we have for oxygen, water, protein, salt, sugar, calcium and other vitamins and minerals. • They also include to maintain pH and temperature balance. • Also in this layer we include the need to be active, to rest, to sleep to get rid of wastes, to avoid pain and to have sex.

Physiological Need

• When the physiological needs are largely taken care of, this second layer of needs comes into play. • When it comes into play people need to find safe circumstances, stability, protection. People may also develop a need for structure and for order. • Looking at it negatively, you become concerned, not with needs like hunger and thirst, but with your fears and anxieties.

The Safety and Security Needs

The Love and Belonging Needs
• When physiological needs and safety needs are, by and large, taken care of, a third layer starts to show up. • When this needs show up you begin to feel the need for friends, a sweetheart, children, affectionate relationships in general, even a sense of community.

• When we have all the previous needs accomplished we start to need something new, we look for a little self-esteem. • Maslow noted two versions of esteem needs, a lower one and a higher one. • The lower one is the need for the respect of others, the need for status, fame, glory, recognition, attention, reputation, appreciation, dignity, even dominance. • The higher form involves the need for self-respect, including such feelings as confidence, competence, achievement, mastery, independence, and freedom.

The Esteem Need

Self Actualization
• These are needs that do not involve balance. Once engaged, they continue to be felt. In fact, they are likely to become stronger as we “feed” them. They involve the continuous desire to fulfill potentials, to “be all that you can be.” • They are a matter of becoming the most complete, the fullest, “you”.

Abraham Maslow therapeutic ideas turned out to be very positive for the World of Business. These points he made are points for people to be in a “normal” /happy/healthy way. When he wrote these ideas, he had no idea he was providing company heads with great tips to improve the regular worker’s efficiency. These points are standards of living, and people’s lives would improve under these conditions. Workers in later centuries worked under degrading conditions, and nowadays, that might still be happening.
