Operating system

 The operating system is a collection of programs

used to operate a computer system.

 It takes the responsibility of computer’s overall

operation and supervision.

CM105.26 5
Operating System (contd)

 It coordinates among various devices and

programs, and provides an interface between a
programmer and the computer system.

 OS is popularly used for the abbreviation of the

operating system.

CM105.26 6
Operating system (contd)

 Now, from the fastest supercomputer and largest

mainframe, right down to the smallest
embedded microprocessor, every computer
uses an operating system.

 Over the years, a variety of operating systems

have evolved and many remain in use.

CM105.26 7
Operating system (contd)
 DOS became the most widely used
microcomputer operating system.

 Today, DOS has been replaced on many

computers by more powerful operating systems
such as Windows, UNIX, Windows NT and
OS/2.

CM105.26 8
Operating system (contd)

 More powerful operating systems make it

possible to run tasks on less expensive
microcomputers.

CM105.26 9
Types of operating system

According to number of users

Single User Operating Systems.

Multi User Operating Systems.

CM105.26 10
Single user & Multi user operating systems

 Only one user can work at a time on a computer

system with a single user operating system.

 More than one user can work at a time on a

computer system with a multi user operating
system.
