 As the low frequency current is the result of interference of two different medium frequency currents. it is named as interferential current. .DEFINITION  Production of low frequency current in the body tissue by the simultaneous application of two different medium frequency currents.

.CHARACTERISTICS  The therapeutic effects derive from the crossing of two current pathways in the treatment field.  Advantages of this type of current are that it can create a deep flow of current into the tissue and it’s better at preventing accommodation to the electrics current. One current pathway flows at one frequency (such as 4000Hz) while the other flows at a slightly different frequency (4100Hz). When these two currents intersect they create an “interfering” frequency.

Beat frequency may be kept constant or varied rhythmically so as to prevent accommodation. Beat frequency is equal to the difference between two medium frequency currents. It lies between 0 to 100 Hz. • Constant beat frequency is also called as the selective beat frequency. .TERMINOLOGIES  BEAT FREQUENCY -the frequency of resultant is known as the beat frequency.

.10 to 50 Hz stimulate motor nerves.50 to 90 Hz produces sedatives or spasmolytics effect and 90 to 100 Hz produces analgesic or pain relief effect. . . Various variable beat frequencies can be used. . .5 to 10 Hz stimulate parasympathetics nerves. It is also called as automatic beat frequency.• VARIABLE BEAT FREQUENCY .Beat frequency of 0 to 5 Hz stimulate sympathetic nerves.

Here the area in which interferential current is set up remains stationary. -Static interference:. The pattern of interferential current may be static or dynamic. This area of static interference gives an appearance of clove leaf as a result of vector addition of two currents and it lies at 45° angles to the perpendicular lines from each electrode. AREA OF INTERFERENCE -It is the area where the interferential current is setup. .

it is possible to move the area in which interference current is developed in a to and fro manner through 45°. vector sweep.-Dynamic interference:. . This dynamic area of interference is also called as vector scan. It is obtained by varying the current intensity in suitable manner. rotating vector etc. Current is varied from 50 to 100%.

. vector sweep : the principle of using the sweep is that the machine is set to automatically vary the effective stimulation frequency using either pre – set or user set sweep ranges.

.THERAPEUTIC EFFECTS  Pain relief  Relief of muscle spasm  Stimulation of innervated muscles  Effect on edema.

ELECTRODES  Vacuum electrode  Pad electrode  Carbon impregnated silicon rubber electrode  Quadripolar probe electrode .

DOSAGE  10 to 20 minutes. For 10 to 25 days on once a day basis  Three times toleration dose .

METHOD OF APPLICATION • Bipolar • Quadripolar • Stereodynamic • Labile .

In contrast to the “classical” interference technique. the placement of third electric field brings about an additional change in intensity .In the mode of operation “stereodynamic” this endogeneous dynamics of the stimulation effect is supplemented bya dynamic alternation of the sites of stimulation. . Stereodynamic interference .
