What do you need to be successful in engineering ?

Commitment Application Strategy Perseverance Associations

Ten steps to academic success

Commitment
1. Decide to be successful
No alternative

Failure is not an option Short term SMART goals

2. Goal setting

Long term Develop plan of action or road map

Write down you goals clearly & post them where you will see them daily

Commitment (cont.)
3. Stay focused and determined to succeed . Life must go on and by Gods will nothing & nobody will stop me

4. Continually remind your self of the REASONS you chose engineering

.hey! hey! thats why I am here

. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF ..& GO FOR IT !!!!!

Application
Cant survive in UTM despite getting excellent SPM /STPM or matriculation results Whats wrong with me .. or.. False sense of security (primary because of their high school experience UTM ????

if I could survive in high school with last minute study etc.then I dont see why I cannot achieve the same level of success with the same level of application

YOU CANNOT BE SUCCESSFUL WITHOUT HARD WORK !!!!

Application (cont.)
If you spend six hours in the library with a group of study buddies and devote perhaps 20% of this time to doing something meaningful .. then have you studied for six hours?

Application . is more about productivity than hours spent

Quality time Hey! Hey! this is for me . and I am doing this for me ! not for my professor or whosoever

Strategy
Passing a driving test
1. Set the appropriate goal 2. Discover the rules of the test , i.e. test requirement (written & driving tests) 3. Practice the specific requirements of the test

4. Rehearse the test itself

5. Pass the test

Strategy (cont.)
Studying engineering rules of the game
Before course begins know your lecturer & what your lecture assumes you to know 2. Do pre-lecture preparation. Read / understand thru the materials in the textbook and course materials prepared by a lecturer prior to attending the lecture 3. Make the most of lectures & classroom time 4. Your textbook is a supplement, not a replacement 5. Write effective solutions to all problems 6. Detailed solutions save time when you need to review material 7. Organize your thought and develop an effective problemsolving procedure 8. Assignments indicates a required standard 9. Ask! Ask! Ask! 10. Practice! Practice! Practice! 11. Develop an examination technique 1.

Ten Steps to Academic Success

1. Set individual academic and personal goals 2. Choose courses carefully 3. Know and use resources 4. Meet and get to know faculty 5. Learn actively 6. Manage your time well 7. Know and actively use reading skills 8. Develop strong listening and note-taking skills 9. Develop and improve you writing and speaking skills 10. Get involved in co-curricular activities; learn skills and gain experience

Three-Stage of Effective Problem Solving

1. Acquaint yourself with the details of the problem, define the goal and decide that nothing will stop me from achieving that goal 2. Try some obvious solutions use class notes or the course textbook .this is where adversity begins to creep in and you may become frustrated with each set back . Only a high degree of perseverance will move you on solving the problem 3. Here, you are well aquainted with all details of the problems you know more or less what doesnt work and you have narrowed down the serach to a few alternativespower or deep thinking is requiredyou may seek help but you are highly focused nonetheless. . the problem is solved here

Perseverance
Adversity (i.e. Setbacks, disappointments and frustrations) is part of the studying process towards achieving successful engineering degree !!!
1. Perseverance is what drives committed individuals to success Perseverance is necessary to warm up your thinking so that you may enter the success zone Ingenuity increases with perseverance Perseverance allows you to break through into the power-thinking zone

Learning and Teaching Styles Case Study -

Answer the following statements (with reasons) 1. Was it a communication problem? 2. What methods of learning / teaching were used by David and Stan? Which learning methods do you prefer?

Learning & Teaching Styles Lecturer vs student

In engineering school, most lecturers tend to teach

verbally (by means of lectures, overhead, chalkboard and textbook intuitively (using words, mathematics and theory) passively (non-actively, without student participation)

However, when learning, many engineering students tend to be

visual (learning most from demonstrations, pictures, diagrams, sketches
and graphs)

sensing (learning from most practical, real-world applications, relevant

examples, worked-out examples, facts and data, not just theory)

active (learning most by discussing, thinking out loud, working in groups,

collaborating and experiencing)

A mismatch between learning and teaching styles can have drastic effects on your performance in the lecture room

So..what to do?

I MUST PASS THIS SUBJECT

Dont label the lecturer as a bad teacher and then blame him or her for all your problems .. Remember !!!! Complaining will do little to help you and the lecturer is not responsible for your learning..YOU ARE !!!!.....take the matters in your own hands and use your energies constructively, as follows

Find out what you need to make the course more compatible with your particular learning style
Talk to your lecturer about difficulties you are experiencing suggest ways in which your lecturers could help you get more out of the lectures Need more picture, demos, more work-out examples, more real world applications. Talk, discuss and collaborate with people who are likely to know what you need to know (e.g. bright and resourceful classmates / seniors etc) Consult sources that will supplement or provide alternative explanations of information from the lectures (e.g. textbooks, journals, articles etc from library, internet etc & . previous notes, assignments, test papers )
These simple steps will also maximize your learning effectiveness & develop your ability to learn independently

Mark the teaching styles which most adequately describe each of your lecturers teaching styles . Do these match to your learning styles?
