in which the National League for Democracy received 59% of the votes. the military junta called a general election. and the military refused to hand over power. Instead. Aung San Suu Kyi under normal circumstances would have assumed the office of Prime Minister. . Aung San Suu Kyi was placed under house arrest at her home on University Avenue in Rangoon. the results were nullified.1990 GENERAL ELECTION  In 1990. Being the NLD's candidate.

(Amnesty International 120297). the motorcade that she was traveling in with other NLD leaders was attacked in Rangoon.1996 ATTACK   On 9 November 1996. The NLD lodged an official complaint with the police. but no action was taken. and according to reports the government launched an investigation. . It is believed the offenders were members of the Union Solidarity Development Association (USDA).

On 12 November 2010. Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) ± won the elections. .HOUSE ARREST   Aung San Suu Kyi has been placed under house arrest on numerous occasions since she began her political career.During these periods. Her house arrest term came to an end on 13 November 2010. which grants the government the power to imprison persons for up to five years. she has been prevented from meeting her party supporters and international visitors. Suu Kyi continued to be imprisoned under the 1975 State Protection Act (Article 10 b).

23 Sep 00: Placed under house arrest. 25 May 07: House arrest extended by one year. . 6 May 02: Released after 19 months. 10 Jul 95: Released from house arrest. 30 May 03: Returned to house arrest. 11 Aug 09: House arrest extended for 18 months. 27 May 08: House arrest extended for another year.PERIODS UNDER DETENTION         20 Jul 89: Placed under house arrest in Rangoon. 13 Nov 10: Released from house arrest.

This was the date her detention had been set to expire according to a court ruling in August 2009.2010 RELEASE  On the evening of 13 November 2010. who rushed to her house in Rangoon when nearby barricades were removed by the security forces. . She appeared in front of a crowd of her supporters. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate had been detained for 15 of the past 21 years. Aung San Suu Kyi was released from house arrest.
