THINK-PAIR-SHARE

yWhen did your mom and dad

get married? yWhere did they get married? yHow long are they married now?

Our parents consider their marriage as a very important milestone in their relationship. Their marriage marked their love for each other. God wanted from the very beginning to make marriage part of our lives.

GOD and MARRIAGE IN THE BEGINNING

God created human beings to love and be loved. He created the first human beings, male and female, different but equal and He found it very good. (Genesis 1:27)

God to first woman: ³be fertile and multiply.´

In this way, God blessed the first man and woman to have children and to share in His plan for creating the human family.

The book of Genesis tells us that God is the author of marriage. Human beings as the image of God who Himself is Love, is created out of love and called to love.

God created man and woman are partner¶s for each other, the woman who is ³bone of his bones, and flesh of his flesh.´ As in Genesis 2:24, ³That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife and the two of them become one body.

However, the two cannot immediately become one after the wedding. The two have to work for their unity. They may be doing it until the last breath of their lives.

JESUS and the SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE

When Jesus came, He elevated the love of a man and a woman for each other in the level of a sacrament. He said, ³«so they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, no human being must separate. (Matthew 19:6)

Sometimes, husbands and wives struggle in their marriage. How do we deal with this?

Jesus furthermore showed the importance of a marriage by attending the Wedding Feast at Cana (John 2:1ff)

Since the time marriage has been an effective sign of Jesus¶ love and presence. Jesus¶ love therefore is made concretely present in the love of a husband and wife. This is what the Church celebrates in the Sacrament of Matrimony.

THE SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY

Matrimony is the sacrament in which a man and a woman become husband and wife and promise to be faithful to each other for the rest of their lives.

Marriage is a serious step to take. It should not be done on the spur of the moment or as a solution to a problem. It is a decision that should come after a long a serious reflection.

We should put God at the center of our married and family life. Love, after all, is not so much looking at each other but looking at the same direction together and sharing the same horizon. And God should be in that horizon.

We Respond.

How can we help our parents to fulfill their marriage vows to each other?
