Cornelia Friederike Christiana  Born into a wealthy.Early Life  Goethe was born on August 28. Lutheran family . 1749 in Frankfurt. Germany  Father was the Imperial Councillor  Mother was the daughter of the mayor of Frankfurt  Had a younger sister.


Goethe went to Leipzig University .Education  Was informally taught by his father. then was formally taught by tutors  Learned all the common subjects of that time  Also received lessons in dancing. horseback riding and fencing  At age 16.

Annette  August 1771. Goethe was certified as a lawyer in Frankfurt  May 1772. became lawyer at Wetzlar .Legal Career  In 1766 he fell in love with Anne Catharina Schoenkopf  This inspired his work.

The Sorrows of Young Werther  First major work that brought him worldwide fame  Did not help him much financially  Plot is influenced by his time at Wetzlar .

he was ennobled . he conducted mineralogical studies and lectures about human anatomy at the Liberal School of Drawing in Weimar  In 1782. a play based on Greek mythology  In 1781. Cornelia died in 1777  Took a trip to Switzerland with Duke Karl August and he wrote Iphigenie.Career  Granted Weimar citizenship in 1776  His sister.

Career  In 1786. and literature. he traveled to Italy and was impressed by Greek and Roman sculpture. architecture.  There he met Christiane Vulpius  In 1787 Goethe was pursuing geological and botanical studies in Naples and Sicily and climbed Mount Vesuvius .

Career  In late 1792. Goethe took part in the battle of Valmy against revolutionary France.  In 1806. assisting Duke Karl August during the failed invasion of France.  Also assisted Karl August in during the Siege of Mainz as a military observer. Napoleon’s army invaded Weimar and the French “spoon guards” occupied Goethe’s home  The next day he married Christiane .

Ulrike von Levetzow but he did not propose due to the opposition of her mother .Later Life  Christiane would die in 1816  In 1823. Goethe recovered from a fatal heart illness  He fell in love with another female.
