COURSE PLANNING

INTRODUCTION
 Any nursing educational programme is

a combination of various courses like medical surgical nursing, mental health nursing etc.  Theses courses are placed in an interwined manner in order to attain the objectives of the educational programme.

LEVELS OF COURSE PLANNING
 The two levels of course planning are ,

At the level of course itself. (i.e., organizing both content and learning experience within the course. II. Planning in relation to the total programme.(This level is concerned with the placement of the course in the program and in relationship to other courses.

PRINCIPLES
 State the objectives in a behavioral terms.
 Follow principles meant for selecting the content

of a course.  Establish sequence. (can be achieved by maxims of teaching).  Ensure logical and psychological continuity.  Principles of integeration  The courses should give adequate weight age to the core curriculum.

 Unity curriculum  Select learning approaches that are

acceptable to all faculty members like problem solving and problem based learning methods.  Flexibility in selecting teaching and learning methods.  Provide variety in modes of learning like assignments, group discussions, independent study modules, problem solving approaches etc.

PRINCIPLES FOR SELECTING THE COURSE CONTENT
 Content should contribute to the achievement of the

objectives of the particular nursing educational programme.  It should be appropriate to the level of the group of students to whom it is to be taught.  Content should have community orientation.  It must be sensitive the changing health needs and aspiration of the students.  It should be experience based.

 Contents

must have transcultural perspectives.  It should provide functional relationship with allied disciplines or professions.  It must be wide and comprehensive.  It should provide continuing learning.  Content must contribute to the personal and professional development of the students.

ELEMENTS OF COURSE PLANNING
 Course description
 Behavioral objectives  Placement of the course by specifying the level of

the learners.  Explain the time allotted.  Details of field experiences should be mentioned.  Organize the content into unitwise or lesson plan wise.  Details of the resource materials and teaching learning methods.

Details of learning activities for the

students. Details of formative and summative evaluation, ratio between internal examination and university examination.
References for teachers and students.
