INTRODUCTION
DTH

stands for Direct-To-Home television.DTH is defined as: The reception of satellite programmers with a personal dish in an individual home. DTH does away with the need for the cable operator and puts the broadcaster directly in touch with the consumer.

HISTORY
DTH

services were first proposed in India in 1996.But was not approved due to the concerns over national security. Finally, in 2000 DTH was allowed and it was Doordarshan which make it possible to provide its facilities to consumers from 1st April 2000.

Broadcasters like Star and Zee are pushing hard for DTH services in India. The operators were required to setup earth stations in India within 12 months for getting license of broadcasting whose cost was $2.14 million and will be valid for 10 years.

There

are five major components involved in a direct to home (DTH) satellite system: the programming source, the broadcast center, the satellite, the satellite dish and the receiver.

Programming

sources are simply the channels that provide programming for broadcast. The provide (the DTH platform) doesnt create original programming itself; it pays other companies (HBO, for example, or ESPN or STAR TV or Sahara etc.) for the right to broadcast their content via satellite. In this way, the provider is kind of like a broker between the viewer and the actual programming sources. (Cable television networks also work on the same principle.)

The

broadcast center is the central hub of the system. At the broadcast center or the Playout & Uplink location, the television provider receives signals from various programming sources, compreses I using digital compression, if necessary scrambles it and beams a broadcast signal to the satellite being used by it

The

satellites receive the signals from the broadcast station and rebroadcast them to the ground. The viewers dish picks up the signal from the satellite (or multiple satellites in the same part of the sky) and passes it on to the receiver in the viewers house. The receiver processes the signal and Satellite & Cable TV passes it on to a standard television.

SET-TOP BOX A set top box (STB) Or set top unit(STU) is a device that connects to a television and an external source of signal, turning the signal content which is then displayed on the television screen.

the dish will also have a different look

HOW DOES DTH DIFFER FROM CABLE TV?

In DTH, TV channels would be transmitted from the satellite to a small dish antenna of the subscribers home. The broadcaster directly connects to the user. The middlemen like local cable operators are not there in the picture. DTH followed cable TV in urban while in Rural,it was riding on its own but the cable TV is limited in urban areas. DTH will be definitely more expensive than cable as it exists today.

IS DTH SUPERIOR TO CABLE TV?

DTH offers better quality picture than cable TV. DTH offers stereophonic sound effects. It can also reach remote areas where terrestrial transmission and cable TV have failed to penetrate. DTH also allows for interactive TV services such as internet access, video conferencing and e-mail. The thing that DTH has going for it is that the powerful broadcasting companies like star, zee etc are pushing for it.
