Microsoft Surface

What is Microsoft Surface?

Microsoft surface is a surface computing platform that respond to natural hand gestures and real world objects. Surface features a 360 degrees UI, 30inch reflective table top display which allows us to grab the data with our hands and move information between objects with natural gestures . All we can do with out Keyboard and Mouse.

Surface Computing?
Surface computing represents a computer that has fundamental change in the way we interact with digital content. It offers a Natural way of interacting with information rather than traditional interactions CUI GUI NUI

The surface - Steve and Andy Wilson of Idea by Microsoft research.(2001)
Vision - To bridge the physical and virtual world

Over 85 prototypes since 2001. First design a Virtual Game table. Release on 2007 at a Digital conference.

Direct interaction : Multi-Touch :

Multi-User :

Object Recognition:

Screen : Touch-sensitive.
Not Electronic. Diffuse illumination. Uses domino codes.

Infrared: An 850-nm Led aimed

at the screen. When the surface is touched the light reflects back. It is picked by 5 infrared cameras.

CPU: Similar components as a Desktop computer.

core2duo processor. 2Gb of RAM. Bluetooth antennas. Modified Vista os.

Projector: Uses a DLP light Engine.

(Digital Light Processing)

DOMINO tags: Similar to barcodes. Tags consists of variously sized dots. Geometrical arrangement of DOTs recognized by Infrared cameras implies the position of object

Surface can respond 54 touches at a time. For 4 people and 12 objects

PIXEL-SENCE technology:

The individual pixels in the display see whats touching the screen and thus information can be processed and interpreted just like human brain working.

Organizing photos and videos and manipulate instantly. Instant Data sharing with other devices and other persons (mail) just by finger tips. Transforming print to digital data. Easy browse through play list entries.

Surface restaurant like order food drinks via surface Most useful at business discussions and multi user gaming. Easy to take complex shopping decisions product comparison. New shopping experience just like make payment by dropping credit card

Pros and Cons

PROS: Intuitive user interaction with natural gestures. Collaborative computing experience. Mediator between devices. Multi-touch environment Object-recognition CONS: Incredibly expensive.($5000-10000) Surface is not portable. Need dim lighting to avoid washing out the screen. Need to put barcodes on objects to recognize.
