BRIEF BACKGROUND
Katete District Women Development Association
(Katete DWDA) is a community Based Organization established in 1992. Katete DWDA was a total membership of 1,547 with 85 women groups affiliated to it. Katete DWDA programs are Advocacy, Agriculture and Food Security, Economic Empowerment, Capacity Building, HIV and AIDS.

HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT IDENTIFYING THIS PROBLEM?

This

problem was identified after the organisation (Katete DWDA) conducted a research in the year 2000 on why women were suffering/their rights being infringed in Katete District.

issue is important because without legal aid women and children rights will continue to be violated. a result the majority of women shun away from participating and contributing positively to development in their communities.

key target are the women, children, traditional leaders and the general community. Women and men are equally involved with men participation in womens projects/activities initiated in their communities

Province Women Development Association (EPWDA) provided financial support to train paralegals. resource was from the Ministry of Justice and Legal Resource Foundation. Two facilitators imparted knowledge and wisdom in the trainer of trainers

MONITORING AND EVALUATION

The

organisation conducts quarterly monitoring visiting using both internal and external monitors. The organisation designed and uses monitoring tools to capture data/information in the communities Feed back meetings are conducted with paralegals, communities members, and victims of abuse.

WHAT RESULTS HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED?

Increased

community awareness on gender violence/human rights Increased women participation in community projects. Reduced cases of property grabbing Increased number of girl childs school enrolment Increased number of cases reported to VSU and courts of law.

ARTICLE 20-25 GENDER BASED VIOLENCE To have the number of GBV cases by 2015 in the targeted communities is possible because all villages in the 85 women groups mainstream in the project

These

activities in the community are sustainable because they have community ownership and participation from inception to implementation and great involvement of local leaders and can be replicated to other Area Women Development Associations in the district.

The

use of community volunteers (PARA-LEGALS) in project implementation is more effective and sustainable. of traditional leaders in project implementation has influenced positive change
