LB & DB DRILLS Week 2

Equipment needed; LB 5 cones 3 flat bags for hurdling 1 tall tackling bag 1 hand held tackling bag 2 footballs DB 15 cones 2 footballs

LB DRILLS FIRST SESSION (40min)

LB Drill #1 Tackling technique (10min) Set up as shown Equipment; 3 flat bags & 1 tall tackle bag Drill; Coach says hut player sprints down and shuffles/ back pedals through bags as shown, then side shuffles back over bags. He then sprints through and makes a form tackle on the bag Coaching points The focus of this station is tackling technique, the agility/ fitness component is added to keep the drill exciting and challenging, also gives us a chance to gauge the athleticism of rookies. Prior to the drill the coach should go over correct tackle technique focusing on low body position, keeping your head up (eyes on opponents hips), stepping into tackle (foot should be placed next to target), making first contact with shoulder THEN wrapping arms and driving with legs. The coach should also go over correct side shuffle technique ensuing no leg crossover. Throughout the drill the coach should stand behind the tackle bag and watch each tackle giving advice. LB Drill #2 Mirror drill (15min) Set up as shown . First cones are 15 yds apart then next three are 3 yds apart. Equipment; 5 cones Drill 1 player is RB and 1 is LB. The RB begins to run varying his speed as he goes. The LB maintains slightly inside the RB as he shadows him along staying in a side shuffle when possible but using a crossover run if necessary to keep up with the back. Once the RB hits the cones 3 yds apart he chooses one of the 3 holes to run through. As he does so, the LB meets him and does a form tackle Coaching points Focus of this station is tracking and tackling back ensuring good starting stance and correct shuffle/ cross over technique (head should not rise, on shuffle legs shouldnt cross) Prior to drill coach should go over LB stance (half squat, feet just past shoulder width, on balls of feet, head up, arms loose) and how we track the inside of the back (keeping our eyes on backs hips). As back makes break, LB should come up to meet in hole and make tackle. Ensure LBs do not over pursue.

LB Drill #3 Block engaging & shedding (15min) Set up; 3 cones placed where each player should start OL cone should be 5 yd in front and 2 yds to side of RB cone and LB cone should be 5 yds in front of OL cone. Equipment; 3 cones, tackle bag (for RB to hold) Drill; Coach tells RB & OL whether it will be inside or outside run. Coach says hut and OL will either attack inside or outside shoulder of LB (50% effort), LB engages block, locates the back then sheds block and makes a form tackle. Coaching points Teach and focus on engaging and escaping blocks explode hands out to inside arm pits, keep thumbs up, keep inside leverage. Teach simple escape moves grab & pull, swim move The coach should also talk about getting your eyes on the RB as soon as possible and tracking his movement making sure you do not over pursue. On inside run LB should meet RB face on whereas on outside run LB should meet RB on angle, playing inside to out.

LB Drill #4 Zone dropping and react drill (10min) Set up as shown Equipment; 2 cones (for starting position for LB) Drill Coach (QB) says hut, LB take read step then begin to back pedal. As QB moves ball side to side, LBs react by doing 45 degree backwards side shuffle. QB then throws ball and LBs break on ball catch and sprint it back. Coaching points Prior to drill explain what zone coverage is and LB zone drop technique (45 degree shuffle and backpedal)

LB Drill #5 OL Read (10min) Set up; Cones for starting positions, (OL 3yds across from QB, LB 5 yds off OL) Equipment; 2 cones Drill; QB (coach) tells OL whether it is run or pass. QB says hut, OL will either shoot forward (imitating run block) or stand up (pass). LB will take read step as he reads OL then reacts, if RUN he will shoot down past OL and get 2 hand touch on QBs hips. If PASS, he will 45 degree zone drop to hook to curl and make play on ball once QB throws it. Coaching points Focus on OL reads, for this drill the LB should focus on the head of the OL. If first movement is forward run, if head moves up or backwards pass. Reinforce that LB always play run first and read step should always be downhill. Once again watch and give advice on stance and shuffle technique.

LB Drill #6 Read and React (3 on 2) (20min) Set up as shown Equipment; 1 cones to symbolise C and help everyone else align off Drill Coach (QB) tells OL whether it is inside run, outside run or pass. Coach says hut and OL either take a step forward or back (to imitate pass or run, NB OL do not actually block). QB either stands up for pass or takes off on run. LBs read OL to backfield and react by either dropping to zones (middle & hook to curl) or by coming up and playing the run. On run plays LB should get in correct position for tackle, breakdown and 2h touch the backs hips. Coaching points Focus on reading OL to backfield. On run plays teach basic flow that is Inside run ILB should meet back front on, OLB should converge on run preventing cut out. Outside run OLB should attack outside shoulder of back forcing him inside. ILB should converge on run playing in to out

DB DRILLS 1st SESSION (40min)

DB Drill #1 W Drill (5 min) Do quickly, reinforcing backpedal technique from last week, go into further detail about technique with breaking down and changing direction.
DB Drill #2 Backpedal tree (10 min) Set up As shown Drill As QB says hut DBs begin backpedal, then as QB chooses direction and passes, DBs break catch ball. Begin with forward cuts, then 90 degree, then post/ corner, then streak. May add double cuts on 90 degree & post/corner Coaching points teach T step and dancers step, focus on breaking on ball DB DB Drill #3 Zone basics (20min) Set up as shown Equipment; 15 cones (for sideline, starting positions for WR and to mark out shallow & deep zones) Drill Routes are drawn up on board to begin with just 2 combinations (WR hook TE corner & WR streak TE out). Coach tells DBs who (S or CB) is playing shallows and who is playing flats and QB tells receivers route combo. Coaching points Prior to drill coach needs to teach DBs about the basics of zone coverage i.e. type of zones on the field, basic zones (cover 2 & 3), stance, drop technique and read progressions (if shallow, read #1 first, if short play him, if deep look to #2 for short route) DB

DB Drill #3 Zone basics continued Drill After numerous repetitions add in 2 more route combos (2 deep routes & 2 short routes) Coaching points Emphasise that we do not defend empty space, if playing shallows and both 1 & 2 go deep, flow deep with WR. Teach that Safeties should play in to out and CB out to in. If time permits, may add RB & 3rd read progression. I.e. flats - #1 short #2 short flaring back

DB DRILLS 2nd SESSION (40min)

DB Drill #4 Backpedal then compete (5min) Setup 2 Dbs shoulder to shoulder 3 yds off facing QB Drill QB says hut, DBs back pedal together. QB will then choose side, the DB on that side will become the WR and the other DB will be defender. Both will break 90 degrees to the side the QB has chosen. The QB will then throw the ball to the WR and the DB will try to break it up. Coaching points Focus on good backpedalling and breaking technique. Teach proper way to play ball from inside alignment i.e. attack WRs arms with DBs downfield arm whilst having upfield arm available to make tackle.

DB Drill #5 1 on 1 Man coverage (10min) Same as last week, simple 1 on 1s but adding a few more routes to defend (slant, hook, in, post, streak) Coaching points emphasise inside alignment when playing man on wideout and watching the WR hips.

DB Drill #6 2 on 2 Man & Zone Cvg (20min) WR & TE on CB & S, combine both drills 3 & 5. Coach will tell DBs whether they are playing Cover 2 (S deep, CB shallow), Cover 3 (opp) or man cvg. QB Will tell WR & TE routes (3 combinations) Routes; 1 WR streak TE out 2 WR Post TE curl out 3 WR hook TE corner
