In the international market of foreign trade of India, the

value of exports from the SSI has been raising from year to year. Exports are important instrument for the creation of employment opportunities in SSI cottage industries and in the agricultural sector as well as in Medium and large industrial sector. 5 states namely A.P, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka. Gives

more than 50% of Indian exports and hence major SSI


are located in these states.

The value of exports from the SSI sector has increased

from rupees 1643 crores in 1980-81

The share of exports from the SSS as % of India's total

exports also rose from 24.5% in 1980-81 to 33.9% in 1996-97.this increases in SSI exports is mainly due to the

promotional measures under taken by the Government as


well as entrepreneurial push.

If exports of power looms handicrafts and khadi are


increased the share of SSI Sector is likely to be nearly

50% of total exports. Even in the global market.


The SSI units has been successful in enlarging their share every year. This goes to prove that the SSI sector is quite significant in the ever changing economic scenario

The SSS in India now produces a wide range of products

from single consumer goods to such sophisticated products like scientific and precious instruments, hearing,

aids computers, electronic components , tape records,


television sets etc.. With a lower level of labor cost when compare to western countries, India enjoys an advantage in exporting both traditional and non traditional labor intensive products,

This apart there is favorable climate for SSI exports in

foreign markets because frequent wages hike (increases) and pollution hazards in industrial countries tend to

favor imports from developing countries , particularly


the import of SSI products.
