Richmond Sugar Sweetened Beverage Tax
AAP-CA SGA COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS BOARD ENDORSEMENT OF TAX, TIER 2 (LETTER ONLY)

Soda Tax
• General tax will be on Nov 2012 ballot in Richmond only --needs a simple majority to pass

• 1 cent tax per ounce of sugar sweetened beverage sold in Richmond, CA
• Advises City Council to allocate revenue generated to projects that treat and prevent childhood obesity (but not binding)

Reasons for support
• Consistent with the mission of the AAPCA to support the welfare of California’s children and obesity prevention priorit

• This tax proposal is the first of its kind, and could establish a statewide precedent • May deter youth consumption of soda consumption

• Legal to endorse/fundraise for AAP-CA 501©4? YES • Total of one complaint about AAP-CA policy of endorsement/fundraising in two 4,500 email fundraising blasts for Dr. Pan— is this reflective of more members who are not taking the time to comment? Should we survey to see whetehr members view this as our role? • Ch Pres to sign future letters as Member, Board of Directors, AAP-CA City, CA • What should be the threshold of support for endorsement of a candidate? For fundraising? • Should we (again) explore a PAC?
