song title: walked outta heaven Artist: Jagged Edge Genre: American R&B group Director: year of release:
This video is about the artiest has broken up with his girlfriend and he is finding it hard to deal it, he describes it feels like he has waken out of heaven. He just wants things back to the way they were. The start of the video you see him getting his suitcase and leaving this shows that they have broken up and a sense of anger is portrayed when the girlfriend troughs and ornament after him Once he has left he gets into the car with is friends. he starts performing the song, the lyrics match with the words so it is synchronous with the visual. There are many shots of them in the car rolling down the high way, he keeps seeing flash backs of him and his girlfriend when they were together this happen thought out the video, then it goes back to the beginning just before he left he turns back and before she was about to through something at him she turns ant puts it back .
He walks out with his bags, she is angry and trough's something after him
Gets in the car with his friends (the group Jagged Edge) “rolling down a lonely high way”
Having flash backs of when they were together, reminiscing.
Performing the song
The end of the video was reminded so he didn‟t leave
The structure to this video is narrative/ performance. I can tell this because there is a story that is being told. The story is about the artist who has broken up with his girlfriend which he is finding it hard to deal with. He describes this feeling as walking out of heaven. He just wants things to go back to the way they were the end he doesn‟t leave and they are back together. The performance side to the video is shown when the group Jagged Edge are singing, the scene changes from when they are driving on the high way and to a white background. This shows performance because they are engaging with the audience and performing their emotions.
Extreme close up
This music video uses a variety of shots
This shot magnifies what is happening, at this point it is rewinding what happened in the beginning when he left now at the end of the video is shows that he isn't leaving. This shot is used to show that it has been reversed.
This shot shows what she is doing and mise-en scene In the video It is used to show that she is thinking about what she is doing.
This shot type was used to show the audience he performers facial expression/ emotion. At this point the singer from the group jagged edge is singing “if you‟ve ever loved somebody” his facial expressions in this close up show that he wants what he used to have. The close up of the female is used to show that she wants him back.
This two shot show that there is some kind of relationship between the two people. Relating it to the song and video, it is used to show the times they had and how they used to be. He is reminiscing.
High angle shot Wide shot
The first shot in the video is a wide shot, this is used to establish the scene and where the scene takes place.
This shot makes the group look small and powerless. At this point the visual fits with the lyrics to the song. This shot is used effectively because they have done wrong and now they are asking to be forgiven.
With the editing I noticed that when it changes from one scene to another if fades out, I think this is effective because it is a soft way to exit the current scene. Throughout the video each member of Jagged Edge has a flash back of how their relationship used to be, it is edited from when they are “rolling down a lonely high way” to an all white scene where they are in a house. I also noticed that when they are in the car and on motor bikes on the high way, it looks like they are moving when really it is a editing technique to make it look realistic. The last thing I noticed about the editing was at the end of the video when it was rewound. This was effective and clear to the audience that it was being rewound because it was the same thing that happened in the beginning of the video.
Lighting In the beginning of the video (first scene) there is high key lighting, as soon as he leaves the house the key of the lighting changes to low. This shows the audience that without his girlfriend his life is dark and low, and when he is with her everything looks nicer, bright and he feels happier. The flash backs are bright as he is remembering the good times, where as when he comes back to what is now reality its back to dark and low key lighting. Costume Throughout the video the females are shown wearing white, this is because they are shown in a memory and they are good memories. The colour white is associated with light, goodness, innocence and purity It is considered to be the colour of perfection. The clothing that the females are wearing are shorts and heels belly tops but the main girl is seen in underwear. the clothes that Jagged Edge are seen in when they are outside is black clothing. Black can be associated with fear and black is the symbol of grief. This could represent that he is scared of what life will be without his girlfriend. They are all in black coats and dark coloured baggy jeans. However when they are performing on the white background they are in white and blue. Character performance The characters perform well as they engage the audience by the way the narrative is shown. The females conform to the expectations, this is portrayed through their costume and their control in the relationship. Their costumes are quite revealing and show a lot of their body. The men‟s character performance show that they are weak, through their performance they express there feelings. There performance subverts to the expectations of men, I think this because men usually are expected to be strong and in control in a relationship but they are portraying that they are weak and need their partners to take them back. Set Throughout this video there were only two sets. There was the white set and outside on the high way. From what I got from the sets was that the white set showed happiness and outside in the dark showed sadness.
All four females are shown in the video at some point who are the girlfriends to each member of Jagged Edge. They all conform to the expectations of females in videos which is sexy and attractive. When they are shown in the video they are represented as their girlfriends but in a good way a good memory as they are on the white background.
The artists themselves are in the video, in the low key lighting print screen they are represented as four males who are sad that they have broken up with their girlfriends they don‟t know what to do. In the high key lighting print screen I think they are representing the same thing just a different set.
The target audience for this video is young adultsadults ages 18+, however I reckon it depends on what music you like listening to. I can tell that the video is aimed young adults because of the age the performers are in the video, also Jagged Edge is a old boy band there Initial release date was September 5th 1985. All the members in Jagged Edge were born around 1975-76 so the older generation would know more about them than a younger age group such as 15. also the narrative is about relationships and how he feels like he has “walked outta heaven” without her, young adults is round about the time when serious relationships may start to form.
This video fits in with Social Integrative- Relationships and „Personal integrative‟ (help with personal identity issues) Identity. I can tell this because when the audience watch the video they can relate to the narrative. It is based on everyday situations and problems that happen.
