Maya's Notebook: A Novel

by

of course it is a typical Allende when California and Chile is brought together. oneod the few books that are set in thr modern times. give you an interesting inside of the village life in Chile. not sure how much of the traditions are true but is sounds convincing to me. maya goes through a selfmade hell because of drugs and alcohol. in Chile she recovers in no time. almost too easy. is there something in thr Chilenian air? maybe we should build lots of drug recover centers there. everybody is unatural friendly. even the childmolester and inzest-happy fathers. strange twist that manual ends up as her bio grand- pa. not necessary for the story. otherwise a good solid read.
Please Look After Mom

by

a heartwarming story. not very do i give 5 stars. this is a well written book. different characters tell about their feeling towards the mother when she vanished. lots of regrets but also thanksfulness. it makes you want to call your own mother and be closer to her. very nice atmosphere.
Fifty Shades Freed

by

happily ever after and married with two kids. what an disappointing end. it seemed that event he author was bored with the sex because the second half of the book did not contain any. It was never really clear why he was so messed up or why he was so rich at such a young age. I hoped for more depth and some interesting ideas to bring to my bedroom, but the third book was just bubble gum to fill the pages. I might look for some real erotica instead of this soccer-mom porn.
Fifty Shades Darker

by

not as interesting as the first one. lots of dull vanilla sex. spoiler alert! a crazy ex girlfriend is caught without any problrms and the chopper crash was easily survived. oh yes and he is still crazy rich. wonder how the story would go, if he would be poor or maybe rich but ugly. which girl is saying no to a guy who makes 100K per hour regardless of any baggage? skimmed only over the sex sinceit seems very repeatitive.
The Jewels of Paradise

by

hoping to be lead into the mysteries of music history but instead i was drawn into the german history of kings and queens. not a thing i was looking for when i picked up this book with the backdrop of Venice. i made it through the book because i really wanted to know the secret ( which then was rather disappointing) but i had a hard time going through it. not sure if information like: she was brushing her teeth and drinking a glass of water or references to a modern day princess's death were moving the story along.
The Lifeboat: A Novel

by

good writing. great story. makes you think what would you do in thr same situation but thrn again there is no way to know and let's hope we will never have to face decisions like this. unusual story about the survivors of a shipwreck in 1914 shortly after the titanic. start of emanzipating women and thr men who judge them. for sure a book i recommend. pageturner.
Lessons in French: A Novel

by

this is rather a young adult book, because the main character is an unfinished human being who tries to find herself in life. Not sure if she does in the end. Trying to please every one instead of concentrating on what is important in life, she ends up frazzled between family and employer and lover. Not necessary a book, I would recommend to book lovers, but a good book for someone who likes to get a superficial view of Paris.
Equal of the Sun: A Novel

by

historical fiction base on a real life persian princess. interesting inside of court intrigues and family drama. first i was afraid i would confuse all the names but then realized there were only 3-4 main character and if you mix up one or two of the lesser characters it is no big deal. quick read. characters are not deep but honest enough to appear real. i wish i would have learn about the eunuch's sister and how she was raised and how her life would play out. maybe there will be a sequel.
State of Wonder

the first third was slow. I was not really connecting with the characters. Then, when the main character arrived in the Amazon and went into the jungle I was interested. THe lasat quarter was a rushed ending with lost of loose ends hastly tied together to make it an almost happy end. Why was she all in a sudden attracted to Milton? Why she sleep with Anders? does not make sense. I read this book first very slowly and then end was a fast read. However, I was never really into teh cahracters and felt with them and could phantom their emotions.
