The Five People You Meet in Heaven

I was a third of the way in and realised I was getting sucked into soppiness. A saccharine book not worth wasting a brain cell on.
The Black Stiletto: A Novel

A man discovers the diary of his mother who has advancing demntia and discovers that his mother is not the person he thought she was. She was a famous or notorious crime fighter of the superhero persuasion. An entertaining read that gallops along as he tells her story, however although I read this quickly I have prevaricated over writing the review that suggests to me that there is something that I wasn't happy with that I cannot quite put my finger on. I think that it might well be the superhero part isn't quite fitted into the context.Slight but enjoyable
Burned: A Novel

Scandinavian crime fiction. the narrator is a reporter traumatised by the death of his son in a fire that also left him badly scarred. The murder is a dark tale of love, jealousy and deception. Have we been here before ?, yes, is it entertaining and readable? yes. Is the story remotely believable? nope.Enjoyable though.

Excelent piece of early science fiction, without the sexism that permeates much of the genre. Please read this.

Irma Voth

A coming of age story. Irma, is growing up in a family that on the face of it is strictly mennonite. They are members of a group that has moved to Mexico to remove themselves frpm the risks of conscription and education. Irma marries outside the group, and is banned by her community. The arrival of a film group enables her to see outside her community and she leaves for the city. But there is more to this story than this, becuase with Irma goes not just her teenage sister but also her months old baby sister given to the girls by their mother. It becomes clear that they left canada, their previous home, not just for the usual Mennionite reasons but also because their father had killed an older daughter who had tried to leave his control. I am not convinced that the mother sending the baby away with her teenagers is plausable however abusive her husband and that didn't quite work for me. Well worth reading.
The Good Soldier

Two rich couples travel together in Europe, they have secret affairs, practice marital deception on a grand scale and two end up dead in strange circumstanes.Clever witty and fun.
The Remains of Sherlock Holmes

by

Well enough written Sherlock rides again set of short stories. Perhaps the language isn't quite Victorian enough but the main problem is the the Estate of Conon Doyle has commisioned Horowitz to write the official Holmes. The cover doesnt quite work either but that is just a quibble.Decent enough but I fear doomed for oblivion.
