I am... torn on this book. On the one hand, the premise really spoke to me, all the magic and ancient gods and alchemy. Plus, hello gorgeous cover all up in my face at every single Barnes and Noble I drop in. I just feel like it fell a bit short. At the heart, this is a YA novel, and it reads like a YA novel. Similar to the Percy Jackson series for me - something I want to love, but only kind of like. However, since the novel ends on a cliffhanger, I feel compelled to read the second.
This book was actually better than I thought it would be. The plot was very intriguing - this whole city is set up like a post-apocalyptic fallout shelter, and I could imagine how horrible it would be to live underground. Happy to hear that it is a series, although I enjoy the ending, which could stand on its own. Will be reading the rest of the series, def.
Tough to read, knowing the whole time what the outcome of the book was going to be. Seriously thought-provoking though, and made me a bit introspective. The author did his research and kept me enthralled the entire time.
I wish I could give it zero stars. It's SO BAD it makes the Twilight series look like Pulitzer Prize winning fiction. I can't even begin to explain how much I found distasteful in this "novel" so I'm just going to copy paste from one of my status updates...
I am really REALLY turned off with how the author is (a) treating Dom/Sub culture and (b) writing the main female character. It has been stated time and time again that she doesn't want to be a submissive, yet the main male protagonist is essentially beating it into her that she will, whether she wants it or not. Look, I'm not into the BDSM scene myself but even I know more about it than the author does. It isn't just spankings and riding crops.
I think the thing that bothers me the most is, Ana clearly doesn't want to be in this D/S based relationship but she doesn't want to lose her one true love, so she takes what she can get. Including a beating with a belt. There is a scene with a tampon that I could have lived without reading. Oh and Ana is a VIRGIN. Who sleeps with Christian after maybe knowing him for 36 hours. Who has very forceful first-time sex with her and of course she's screaming in pleasure. Actually, every time she has sex, she's screaming in pleasure, high-fiving her inner goddess, or saying oh my...
Zero stars, this book made me vomit in my mouth. No thanks.
