Great concept, great voice, bad execution. The point of an asshole alpha hero is the amount of groveling he has to do. No groveling and there were insecure, impressionable teenagers mixed up in his assholishness.
2-1/2 stars. I liked the lilty, formal language a lot. I liked that the ending was a tad ambiguous. There was the misuse of a word (discrete/discreet), which bugged. But a) it was too short and because of that, b) I can't buy how the debutante was initiated into the pleasures of the flesh when she hadn't been so much as kissed. And, well, I didn't really care that much about the characters; I simply didn't know anything about them.
There's a lot wrong with this book. I agree with one reviewer that the first really BAD thing is that we aren't told the woman and man know each other up front. Took forever to figure that out. I also didn't like the way she was acting like a stalker/supplicant.However, I read this book 2-3 years ago and I still remember it AND its details AND that I liked it AND what was wrong with it. At this point in my romance reading, that's utterly remarkable. So, 3.5 stars, up from what should really be 2 ("okay") because it wasn't bland enough to disappear into the fog of my romance-jaded head.
I knew this was a novella when I picked it up as a freebie because the blurb was intriguing, so I wasn't expecting much more than a sketch of worldbuilding, characterization, and plot. Going into it with that expectation, it didn't disappoint. It had some intriguing concepts (too many) that I thought were used thinly, but again, length. I got exactly what I expected but I enjoyed it anyway.Update: Here I am a month later and I can't remember having read this at all, but I know I must have because I rated it and wrote something about it. And since I STILL can't remember anything about it after having read what I wrote, I'm downgrading from 3 to 2.
I liked it. It made me bawl almost all the way through. Firstly, I like Big Misunderstandings and Martyr Heroines. Secondly, I like Unrelenting Angst. It's probably natural I liked this book, then.2012-01-26 UPDATE: Downgrading because even while looking at the keywords I can't remember what this story was about, and I only read it two weeks ago.
