Club gearing up for 31st annual show

BY MIKE FORD mford@delphosherald.com DELPHOS For the 31st year, the Delphos Area Car Club will hold its annual car show on historic Main Street. This years event will take place on July 20 and President Ron Siefker anticipates a variety of vehicles for locals to appreciate. Well have motorcycles, trucks, street rods from 1955-57, stocks from 1955-57, 1957-60 stocks and modified. With the superstocks, you can put anything in it that you want different motors, you can lower it but stock cars have to have original wheels, motors and interior, he said. Then, we have rat rods, which are cars they usually primer, lower the rear and put big tires on it. We also have a class for the 1920s to 1940s and there are very few in that class. The vehicles only compete with those in their respective classes. Judges are not limited to determining who wins a specific class; each judge esteems a variety of entries. We have five judges for 36 classes and we have a point system. A certain number of points are awarded for things like how clean it is or how original it is, the interior, how well the vehicle shines, the trunk and things like that, he said. A judge will go down a line and maybe only judge one car of a certain class. The judging is based on the point system, so it isnt based on how much people like your car. The car club also opens its show to car dealers. Were still going to have two new cars from every dealership around Delphos; well have them come in so people can see whats new this year, he said. The Delphos Area Car Club Car Show is a fan favorite for many miles, drawing entrants from throughout West Central Ohio. The event will officially begin at 8 a.m. but Siefker said most onlookers dont begin pouring in in droves until about 10 a.m.

Trophies will be awarded to the top three in each class. This is the second year for the rat rod class, which Siefker describes: Its a car from the 1930s, 40s or 50s that isnt painted. They chrome up the motor and just primer them. Theyll put a 350 or Ford 302 in it and primer the body. They call them rats because they dont have the money to put into a real nice one, he said. Around 125 cars, trucks and motorcycles will be on display that Saturday following another favorite the night

before. Were having a cruise-in on Friday night and on Saturday, well open the doors at 8 a.m. for everyone to come in and park their cars until noon. Then, theyll be judged, he said. For many, the cruise is as important as anything else. We get as many cars for the cruisein as we do the show because a lot of people have a car they wont win with but they want to show it off and it doesnt cost them anything to do that, Siefker concluded.

Easy tips
(ARA) - Did you know its possible to save hundreds of dollars a year when it comes to automotive expenses? You can save money and keep your car running longer by doing a little research and by upgrading some of the car care products you already buy. Here are some easy tips for you to keep your car running great while keeping more money in your pocket: Worth the upgrade Improve your cars fuel economy and engine life by upgrading to high performance synthetic motor oil like Royal Purple. Studies have shown that Royal Purple motor oil may improve fuel economy by as much as 5 percent and can significantly reduce engine wear. When compared to conventional motor oils, premium synthetic oils will allow you to go more miles between oil changes, reducing maintenance costs and time spent in the shop.

the vehicle. A tune up can include replacement of the fuel filter if applicable, changing the spark plugs, and replacing worn belts. Scheduling recommended tune ups is an important step in preventative vehicle maintenance that will make sure the vehicle gets the best gas mileage possible and will uncover problems before they become expensive to repair. Get a quote Take advantage of insurance companies that offer free quotes for your auto insurance. Prices can vary from company to company, so it pays to do a little research. Obtain at least three price quotes by using the Internet or calling an insurance agent directly. Have your current policy and coverage in front of you so you can compare the quotes you receive for the best value. For more ways to reduce insurance costs visit the U.S. Insurance Information Institutes website at www.iii.org.

Keep your tires inflated Improve your gas mileage by keeping your tires properly inflated. The U.S. Energy Department reports that 50 to 80 percent of the tires traveling on U.S. roads are underinflated which can increase fuel consumption by up to 3 percent. Make sure you inflate the tires to the manufacturers recommended tire pressure and not by the number on the sidewall of the tire. Tires are produced to fit a broad range of vehicles, but manufacturers spec tire pressures that are specific to the cars components. For more fuel savings tips visit www.fueleconomy.gov. Tune it up Check your manufacturers manual for the recommended tune up interval, but the general recommendation is two years or 30,000 miles depending on conditions such as extreme temperatures, weather and use of

Squeeze more savings out of the gas pump this summer

(ARA) - With gas prices on an eternal upswing and the summer driving season in full force, drivers are looking for ways to alleviate the pain at the pump. Some simple steps can make a big difference in your fuel economy so you can save money and get the most out of every gallon. Start with the type of tire you have, for example. Thanks to a mix of Mother Nature and clever eco-technology, theres a new tire that uses the oil from orange peels to create a special rubber compound that makes it more fuel efficient and last longer. The mixture of orange oil and rubber in our new AVID Ascend improves grip and treadlife without giving up other gas-saving properties like low rolling resistance, says Pat Keating, manager of technical engineering for Yokohama Tire Corporation, maker of a variety of truck and car tires. Orange oil, a sustainable resource, is the differentiator. Keating explains that low rolling resistance (LRR) tires improve fuel efficiency because they provide less friction as the tire rolls down the road. Less energy is dard touring tire - that means hundreds of dollars in fuel savings over the life of the tire. Thanks to the presence of orange oil in the manufacturing process, fuel efficiency is achieved as well as long life. How long? Up to 85,000 miles in the case of the Ascend so drivers can keep driving on this season. But consumers can also save money by simply driving smarter and checking/maintaining their tires regularly. Here are some of Keatings money-saving tips: * Keep your tires properly inflated. Once a month, when the tires are cold (at least three to four hours after the vehicle has been driven), check tire pressure with a reliable tire gauge. Be sure the valve stems have a plastic or metal cap to keep See SAVINGS, page 7

wasted, which is good for eco-conscious and budget-wary consumers who want to maximize their mileage. Studies show driving on LRR tires alone can save about $100 annually on gas. Add orange oil and the savings go even higher. It makes the Ascend about 20 percent more energy efficient than a stan-

How your smartphone can help you care for your car
(ARA) - If you can resist the temptation to reach for it while youre behind the wheel, your smartphone can be a great asset as you care for your vehicle. A smartphone can give you instructions for maintenance procedures while you are under the hood, help you find a part that needs fixing and get you to a trusted mechanic quicker and easier than ever before. Whether youre a weekend mechanic or simply enjoy being able to keep a handy and accessible maintenance log, here are few ways your smartphone can help you take better care of your car: * How-to videos. YouTube isnt just a great place to check out the latest hilarious viral video, its a great resource for finding videos that can lead you through common car maintenance procedures. Being able to pull up an installation video, often for your specific car, on a smartphone so you can watch while you replace parts is convenient for mechanics, says Tom Taylor, engineer and vice president of RockAuto.com. * Parts catalogs. Knowing that it would come in handy for both professional and do-it-yourself mechanics, RockAuto.com recently released a mobile version of its comprehensive parts catalog. Someone under a car looking at a rusty parking brake cable does not want to make a dozen trips back to the computer on their desk. We created a mobile version of our catalog for customers who want to research new parts while they are literally looking at the old parts on the car, says Taylor. With a smartphone-ready parts catalog, you can not only see your options for replacement parts, but place your order on the spot while you continue to work. * Maintenance diaries. If youre like many conscientious car owners, you probably keep a log book in your glove box detailing everything from maintenance procedures to oil changes and even gas mileage from tank to tank. The good news is there are now a number of mobile device apps that can make this task even easier for you. A good car maintenance app will organize and present the notes you keep in a logical way, and even allow you to keep notes on multiple vehicles. Some even have the ability to send you reminders when you are due for an oil change or other routine maintenance procedures. * Garage locaters. If you end up breaking down in unfamiliar territory, a smartphone can be of great assistance in finding a reputable shop. Your map app can help you locate the shops closest to you and then you can take to the Web, visit a shops site and read reviews collected by mobile-friendly services like CustomerLobby to learn what other customers said about repairs they had done at the shop. * Car buying info. Your smartphone can also help you if youre in the market for a new car. If youre on the showroom floor, you can use your phone to browse vehicle specifications and read reviews. Many car magazines now have mobile sites, making things that much easier, and you can even get a quick answer on what kind of fuel economy to expect at fueleconomy.gov/m. Car owners have long been using Internet resources for many things from answering common maintenance questions to ordering new parts, says Taylor. There are limits on the amount of information that can be displayed on a smartphones small screen, but the increasing availability of resources for mobile users has definitely made it easier to get many car questions answered and needs addressed while people are on the go.

Car maintenance made easy with simple tips

(ARA) - Everyone knows car maintenance is important, but if youre not a gear head - someone who loves working on vehicles - the idea of doing routine car maintenance can be very intimidating. Whether on the set of Top Gear, at NASCAR races or just in my garage at home, Im fortunate enough to be around cars a lot, says Rutledge Wood, SpeedTV correspondent and host of Top Gear USA. I love driving them, repairing them and tinkering with them. However, for a lot of people, cars can be a confusing and even intimidating piece of machinery to work on. To help people feel more comfortable in maintaining their vehicles, Wood offers some simple tips that can make anyone feel like a gear head. filter. 4. Then, taking your new oil filter, lubricate the rubber gasket with some new oil and fill the new oil filter with oil to about two-thirds full. 5. Carefully screw the new oil filter clockwise into place (holding it upright); tighten only as much as you can with one hand, dont overdo it or else it can cause a leak. 6. Now its time to fill the engine with oil, so unscrew the oil fill cap on the topside of the engine and insert your funnel. Its smart to check your owners manual to find out how much oil your engine holds if youre unsure, then pour a little more than threefourths that amount into the engine. 7. Finally, start your vehicle and let it run for about a minute. During that minute, take a peek underneath to make sure you dont have any leaks. After a minute, turn off your vehicle and check the oil level on the dipstick, adding more if necessary. I use and recommend Valvoline NextGen Oil. It works great and since its made with 50 percent recycled oil, its good for the environment as well, says Wood. To sweeten the deal, theyve even come out with a Close the Loop program where theyll give you a $20 mail-in offer if you return your used oil at participating auto parts stores and buy five quarts of NextGen for your next oil change. diminished visibility for yourself and other drivers, especially when driving at night or in poor weather. Replacing or professionally restoring headlight lenses can cost hundreds of dollars. Options like the 3M Headlight Restoration Kit - No Tools Required allow you to use basic DIY skills and a little elbow grease to sand, smooth, and polish your way to clearer lenses from the comfort of your own garage. This easy-to-use kit includes a series of hand-held abrasives and rubbing compound thats used to remove yellowing and surface blemishes, and then refine and polish the lenses to reduce and remove scratches.

Check your tires

Worn treads are a major safety issue while on the road, leading to hydroplaning, poor traction as well as reduced fuel efficiency. Luckily, checking your tread wear is simple. Look at the tread pattern. Youll probably see something called tread wear bars. These are small bridges between your treads. Look at the tread pattern and youll see the beginnings of these bars start to form between the treads, or running across the tires. As the tires wear, these bars will become flush with the tires tread. If they are, then its time to change your tires. Another simple trick is to head for the change jar. Just grab a penny and place it upside down with Lincoln facing you in the center of the tread (at the thickest part of the tire). If you can see the top of his head its time to get new tires. By following these tips, you might not quite be ready to join a NASCAR pit crew just yet, but youll be well on your way to becoming a true gear head, says Wood.

Change your oil

While many dont find the prospect of being under a car messing with greasy filters their idea of a fun Sunday afternoon, changing a cars oil isnt as daunting a task as it seems. Here are a few easy tips: 1. Make sure your engine is cool before you start, then safely jack up your car and support it with jack stands. Lay a piece of cardboard under the engine, just in case you spill any oil. 2. Position a recycling container under the oil pan thats on the bottom of your engine, then undo the drain plug and let the old oil pour into it. When the old oils out, put the drain plug back on and tighten it to your cars torque specification. 3. Next, remove your old oil filter using an oil filter wrench; turn the filter counterclockwise until its free, but watch out you dont spill the old oil thats still in it. Make sure the rubber gasket comes out with the old

It may seem obvious that your headlights are one of the most critical safety features on your car, but whats not always top of mind is how quickly they can become yellowed, hazed or dull from rough road conditions and exposure to the sun. This can lead to severely

(Continued from page 3) dirt out and seal against leakage. * Slow down. All vehicles lose fuel economy at speeds above 55 mph. Driving 55 mph instead of 75 mph can reduce fuel cost by 25 percent. Driving 65 mph instead of 75 mph can save 13 percent. * Turn off your engine if youre stopped for more than a couple of minutes. Fuel efficiency savings of up to 19 percent are possible by not letting your engine idle too long while stationary. * Taking off from a stoplight like a drag racer and then slamming on the brakes to stop consumes gas at a faster rate. Accelerating less and slowing moderately can increase fuel efficiency by more than 30 percent. Also, many traffic lights are timed for efficient traffic flow, so youll

hit more green lights in a row by maintaining the speed limit. * Tires must be replaced when the tread is worn down to 2/32 of an inch. An easy test: place a penny into a tread groove.

If part of Lincolns head is covered by the tread, youre driving with the proper amount of tread. If you can see all of his head, you should buy a new tire. * Tires should be rotated at least every
