INTRODUCTION WelcometothesecondannualbirdreportforLesvosLesvosBirds2010.Aslastyear,thereporthasbeen collated,writtenandeditedbymyselfwithassistancefrommembersoftheLesvosBirdRecords CommitteeEleniGalinou,NikosProbonasandTerryRobinsonforwhosehelpIamextremelygrateful. BIRDRECORDSUSEDFORTHISREPORT LastyearImadeapleaformorerecords.Thatpleawasheardbyasmallnumberwhobetweenthem fromrecordsgatheredfromtheLesvosBirdingLogatHotelPasiphae,fromrecordswritteninthePela HotelandKalloniBayHotel(formerlyKalloniII)logs,fromrecordssenttomedirect,andfromrecords gleanedfromtripreportspostedonlinecontributedover7500recordstothedatabase.Thisisafabulous responseandcomparesimpressivelywithonlyc.500recordsreceivedfor2009.Attheendoftheyear,the 2010databasestoodatover21,000records.Whilstthismakesmyjobfarmuchharder,itdoeshowever makeforamuchmorecompletereport,atleastforthemainspringandautumnbirdingperiods. LesvosresidentTerryRobinsonagaincontributedahugenumberofrecords,mostlyfromhislocalareaof SkalaPolichnitouandthePolichnitosSaltpans.EleniGalinoureturnedtohernativeLesvostowardstheend oftheyearandcontributedmanyadditionalrecordstowardstheyearend,andIamsure,shewillprovean importantcontributorincomingyears.Thisalsomeansthatwenowhavetworesidentbirderscoveringthe twomajorsaltpanareasofKallonisandPolichnitos. COVERAGEIN2010 Aswellasamassiveincreaseinrecordssubmittedforthemainspringandautumnweeks,Ireceiveda substantialnumberofrecordsfrombirdersvisitingtheislandearlierinthespringthannormal.Jean PhilippeandSebastianSibletvisitedLesvosfromlateMarchforafortnight,andAndyStoddartwasonthe islandinearlyApriltoo.Thisaddedaconsiderablenumberofrecordsforthisimportantspringperiodfor manyareasoftheisland,andformanyspringmigrants.Thisnotonlyyieldedmanyfirstrecordsforthe year,butalsosomeearliesteverrecordsforsomespecies,aswellasanumberofqualityraritiesincluding severalGreaterSpottedEaglesthefirstsince1999. Thefirstofthemainspringweeks(from15April)waslargelylostduetothedisruptioncausedbythe Icelandicvolcano.Thisweeksawfewbirdersreachtheisland,withnormalserviceresumingfrom22April. SUBMITTINGYOURBIRDRECORDS Iwillcontinuetocollaterecords(asdetailedabove)forfutureyears.Allrecordsofrareandscarcespecies (seekeytotheSystematicListbelow)willbefollowedupandpassedontotheLesvosBirdsRecords Committee(LBRC)orforGreeknationalrarities,forwardedtotheHellenicRaritiesCommittee(HRC).You cansubmityourrecordsasfollows 1. 2. 3. THENEWENVIRONMENTALCENTREATSKALAKALLONIS Regularvisitorswillnothavefailedtonoticeinrecentyearsthisunfinishedbuildingonthenorthern outskirtsofSkalaKallonis.Well,theKalloniEnvironmentalCentrehasatlonglastbeenopened.Birderswill beabletovisitthecentrefromAprilbetween09001300hand18002100h.Thecentreissituatedalong thestreetthatrunsdownthesideofthebakersneartheminisoccerpitchonthenorthernsideofthe village.Sovisitswillbeeasytofitinaroundatavernalunchordinner.Ofinterestwillbeenvironmentaland naturalhistorydisplaysfortheisland,andthereisalsoalectureroom(butasyetnospecificlectures plannedforthebirdingseasonseetheLesvosBirdingwebsiteforanynewsonthis).Thecentrewillalso hostaLesvosBirdingbirdlog.TherewillalsobeinternetaccesshereforyoutoviewmyLesvosBirding websitefornewsfrompreviousdays(askthecentrestafffordetails).Itishopedawebsiteforthecentre willbeupandrunningbythespring.IllprovidealinkfromtheLesvosBirdingwebsitewhenitis. Thecentrehasthreestaffmembers,ageographer,amarinebiologistandlocalenvironmentalistandbirder (andLesvosBirdRecordsCommitteemember)EleniGalinou.Thecentrestaffwillalsoholdthekeysforthe hidesattheKalloniSaltpans.Theywillensurethehidesareopen,butifyoufindthemlocked,popintothe centreandletthemknow.

DRIVINGOFFTHEMAINROADS Careshouldbetakenwhenleavingthemainmetalled/tarmacroadsanddrivingalongthedirtroadsand tracks.Somecarhirecompaniesdonotincludethesedirtroadsandtracksintheirinsurancecovercheck yourcarhiredetails.Eventhosethatdocoverthisnowhaveadisclaimerstatingthatyouareliabletothe fullcostofrepairingtheundersideofahirevehiclebecauseofpreviousproblemswithdriversdriving acrosscountry. Ifyoudochosetodrivealongsomeoftheminordirttracks,pleasetakecare.Evenifamap,mybookor someoneindicatestoyouthatitissafetodoso,trackscanquicklydeteriorate,andcanchange considerablyfromyeartoyear,sopleasetakecare. MYITLINIKALLONIROADWIDENING TheroadwideningschemethathasbeenongoingnearMytilinireachedtheKalloniareaduringthe summerof2010.Workwillcontinuethrough2011sopleasetakecareinroadconstructionareas,andin particular,takecarwhenpullingon/offthenewroadincludingwhenusingthehideinthenortheast corneroftheKalloniSaltpans.Also,bewareofthespeedlimitsintheroadworksthepolicefrequently havespeedtrapsintheseareas(aswellastheregularlocationsoftheTsikniasRivermainroadbridgeand eithersideoftheSoumouriaScopsCopsenorthofKalloni). TRESSPASSINGANDDISTURBANCEOFBREEDINGBIRDS Wecontinuetoseeunnecessarytrespassanddisturbanceofbreedingbirdsinsomeareas.Atboththe OlivetreeWarblersiteinPotamiaValleyandPendulineTitnestsiteatSkalaEresou,farmfenceswere brokendowntogainillegalaccesstothenestingsites.Also,attheAlykesWetlandsandthebeachnearthe KalloniSaltpans,groundnestingbirds(inc.Stonecurlew)wereagaindisturbedandbreedingRufousBush robinsagainharassed,beingchasedfrombushtobush. Thosewhoundertakesuchthoughtlessactionsalsohaveasecondaryimpact.Manyareasoftheislandare underincreasingpressurefromhunterswhoarebeingrestrictedmoreandmore.Ahuntingbanhas recentlybeenplacedontheareasaroundtheKalloniSaltpans,muchtotheangeroflocalhunters.For birdersandphotographerstothencausedisturbancetotheseprotectedareasunderminesthecaseto keepthesesiteshuntingfree. In2011,birdersandphotographersarerespectivelyaskedtoavoidsuchincidents.Atthetimeofwriting signsarebeingconsideredinsomeareastokeepusawayfromsomesensitivebreedingareas. NOTESONBIRDINGSITES IneachreportIwillaimtoprovideanysignificantupdatestothemainbirdingsitesmajorchangesin habitat,accessrestrictions,etc.AsstatedinABirdwatchingGuidetoLesvosItryandfollowthenamesused ontheblueRoadEditionsmapoftheisland(whichIrecommendyougettouseonyourvisit).Page numbersrefertothesitepageswithinABirdwatchingGuidetoLesvos. SkalaKallonisPool(p.97) Asinrecentyears,thepoolremainedaghostofitsformer,gloriousself.Itwasovergrownandwithhigh waterlevelsnovisiblemuddymarginswerepresent,andwhenthewaterdideventuallydrop,anymargins werentvisible.Despitethis,itisstillworthcheckingforwaterfowl,heronsandmarshternsandthe surroundingareastillattractsmanymigrantpasserines. Negotiationswiththeownersregardingthefutureandimprovementofthesiteremainongoing.

Christou(Kamares)River(p.98) ThisriverisnamedasChristouRiverontheRoadEditionsmap,butisknownlocallyastheKamaresRiver (andiscalledthisonthenewinformationboardbytheroadbridge).Iwillcontinuetousetheabove presentationonmywebsiteandinreports. PotamiaValley(p.99) AnobligingpairofOlivetreeWarblerswerefoundneartheinlandbridge(notthemainroadbridge). Unfortunatelysomebirdersandphotographerschosenottorespectprivatelandandenteredtheolive groves,andinsodoingbrokedownafence.Iknowsomewerechallengedandleftthegroveswhenasked todoso.Thankstothosewhoaskedthemtogetoutfromunderthetrees. Enteringthegrovesrarelyprovidesanybetterviewsofthesebirds.Themajoritywhorespectedtheprivate landwereeventuallyrewardedwithgoodviews.Itsbetterjusttowaitratherthanwadein,trespassand damagethelandownersproperty. MetochiLake(p.102) Parkingisbecominganissuehereattimes(usuallyearlymornings).Pleaseparksensiblyleavingenough roomfortractorsandtruckstopass. Dontforgetthattheareaaroundthelakeisworthexploring,particularlytheculvertrunningalongthe westernsideofthelakewhichoftenholdsheronsandcrakes.RockNuthatchbreedstothenorthofthe lake.Bothareascanbeviewedifyoutakethecircularwalkaroundthelake(seebookfordetails)

KalloniSaltpansarea(p.108) Viewthesaltpansonlyfromtheperimeterroad(inc.thenewsouthhidejustwestofthesaltworks entrance),thenorthwestcornerhide,theeasttrackandtheAlykesWetlands(seebelow).Viewingfrom themainKalloniMytiliniroadcanbedangerous.Thereisnoaccesstothefieldsaroundthesaltpansother thantheAlykesWetlands(seebelow). Thesouthhidewasagainlockedformuchofthespring.Thiswillimproveasthekeyhasbeentransferred tolocalbirderEleniGalinou(whoisalsooneofthestaffatthenewlyopenedKalloniEnvironmentalCentre inSkalaKallonis)whowillensurethehideisunlockedforouruse. Theseasonallyfloodedfieldsonthesouthsideofthepansoppositethesaltworksentrancewereagaina realmagnetforbirdsandbirders.Attimesitcangetverybusy,especiallyalongthetrackbeyondthe saltworksentrancewhichisthemostpopularviewingarea.Pleasetakecarewhendrivingpastgroupsof birdershereandthoseonfoot,pleasebeawareoftraffic!Pleaseparkononesideoftheroadonly. ThoseaccessingthebeachpastthePysosbeachcaf(Ivebeeninformedthatthiscafhasbeenillegally erectedontheNatura2000protectedcoastalstrip)areremindedthatgroundnestingspeciessuchas Stonecurlewoccurhereandbirdersareaskedtotakecaution.RufousBushrobincanoftenbefoundin thetamarisksalongthebeachhere,andyouareaskednottoharassbirdsbypushingthemfrombushto bush.Stayatasensibledistanceandthebirdswillusuallycomeoutandperform. Thetrackdowntheeastsideofthepans(fromthehideintheNEcorner)shouldonlybeaccessedonfoot. In2010afewbirdersattemptedtodrivedownthistrackagainwithlittleregardforthosebirdingonfoot. Thosefewdriverssoonfoundthetrackunmanageableandsoonhadtoturnround(usuallywithdifficulty). AlykesWetlands(p.112) Thefieldsandmarshesthatlietotheeastofthesaltworksshouldbeaccessedonfootonly.Parkattheend oftheracetrackbytheconcretebridgethereisplentyofroomformanycars.Careshouldbetakenwhen approachingtheSaltpansfenceasgroundnestingspeciesincludingStonecurlewandKentishPloverboth breedinthisarea.Ifindoubt,donotapproachthefencelineandviewfromorneartothemaintrack. Pleasetrytoavoiddisturbingthewadersonthepoolsasthosebirdersarrivingafteryouhavegonewould liketoenjoythesebirdstoo. Soumouria(KalloniMiniSoccerPitch/ScopsCopsep.115) ThissiteunderwentextensivetreethinninginMay2009(nottotaldestructionasreportedbysome).In 2010thesitesupportedtheexpected23pairsofScopsOwlsandbirdswereagainfoundroostinginthe eucalyptustreeshere. Platania(p.120) NotethatthebestwaytoaccessthePlataniatrackfromtheNapiValleyendistoapproachfromthenorth (iftravellingfromthesouthdrivepasttheturntoPlataniaandthenturnroundsafelyneartherubbishtip andreturnsouthtoapproachfromthenorth). Takecarepullingoffthemainroadontothetrackastheimmediatejunctionwasagainunstablein2010. Thetrackitselfremainspassableformostcarswithcare,butareminderthatyouwillbechargedbyyour hirecompanyforthecompletecostofanydamagedonetotheundersideofahirevehicle! Thedistancesgiveninmybookareincorrect.Thecattlegridsiteisonlyc.2.5kmfromtheroad.Also,at around2kmthereisaforkinthetrack.Ignoretheturntotheleftandproceedonthemaintrack(toright). YoumightthinkaboutparkingoffthemainNapiValleyroad(e.g.atthetrackrunninguptothemastsat

Mavria)andwalkingthePlataniatracktothecattlegrid(2.5km).Thisisafabulouswalkwithmanyofthe NapiValleyspecialtiesfoundalongitslength. Kavaki(p.124) ThisremainsthemainsiteforRppellsWarbler.Thisspeciescontinuestodeclineontheisland,mirroring thenationaldeclinethroughoutGreece,withonlythreepairsnowpresentinthisarea.Pleasedonotenter thescrubareaswherethebirdsbreed.Viewonlyfromthelaybyareasandtheroughtrackupthehillon thesouthside.
Kavaki,lookingnorthtowardsMolivos(toprighthandcorner)andTurkey(hillsindistance),April2010 WendyBall ThisisnowthelastknownbreedingsiteforRppellsWarbleronLesvos.Withonlythreepairsseenherein recentyears,thissitetoohassufferedadecline(sixpairspresentuptoatleast2004).
Perasma(p.125) Refilledinlate2009,thereservoirremainedfullthroughouttheyearandattractedsomegoodbirds. Ipsilou(p.147) Theoldmonasterypathfeaturedinmybooksawanincreaseinusethisyear.Thisisnotaproblembut severalpeopleslippedonthepaththisyear(sheepdroppingsandtroddeninvegetationmakesthe pebbledsurfaceslippery).Pleasetakecarewhenusingthispath.Mostpeoplechoosetowalkdownthe pathwhichiscertainlyeasierforbirding. Pleasedonotventureofftheroadsoroldmonasterypath.Apartfromunnecessarilytramplingtheground floraanddisturbingnestingbirds,theslopesarehazardouswithlooserockswhichcouldcauseyouinjury ortoothersiftheyaredislodgedandrolldownthehill. Areminderthatphotographyisnotpermittedinsidethechapelinthemonastery.Therewereagain incidentswerepeoplewereejectedthisyear.Also,ifyouaskforthemuseumtobeopened,oryouvisitit whenitis,bepreparedtomakeadonationtothemonastery.

Faneromeni(p.151) SomestillseemunabletolocateFaneromeniLowerFord!Itisarrowedonthemaponp.151ofA BirdwatchingGuidetoLesvos.AlongthemainFaneromenitracktaketheturndowntowardsthebeach (signed)andthentherightturn(signedchapel)andfollowthistotheford. Birderschoosingtowalkalongtherivercontinuetogetaverbalbashingfromotherbirdersforflushing birdstheywerewatching.Walkingalongtheriversjustservestopushbirdsawayfromthemainfordareas wheremostbirderschoosetoviewfrom. PandeleimonasPools ThesepoolslieseveralkmeastofEresosnorthofthemainroadtoMesotopos.ThissiteisntincludedinA BirdwatchingGuidetoLesvos,butnowthepoolsarematuring,morepeoplearestoppingontheroadside hereandviewingfromthecarandbeingrewardedwithsomegoodwetlandspeciesincludingLittleCrakes andheronspecies.Viewonlyfromtheroadsidethereisnoaccesstothepools. AchladeriForest(p.167) TwopairsofKrpersNuthatchbredatthetraditionalKofinaspicnicsite(openareawithwhitebuilding). Thisremainsthebestsitetoseethespecies,butitisbynomeanstheonlysitewithover600pairsin pinewoodsinthecentralandsoutheasternareasoftheisland.TheforesttracktothenorthofKofinasis alsoworthexploringwithbirdsseenfrequentlyhere(seep.167ofABirdwatchersGuidetoLesvos). KrpersNuthatchcanalsobefoundatnearbyPessaWaterfalls(c.2.5kmsouthofAchladerionthewest sideoftheroadlookfornoticeboardsandfollowforesttrackstofalls). ProblemsbetweenphotographersandbirderswereagainwitnessedatthemainKofinaspicnicsite.I reiteratewhatIsaidinlastyearsreportphotographersarerequestedtorespectboththebirdsaswellas thosewatchingthem;birdersareaskednottodisturbphotographerswhoaresatquietlynearthenest unlessthereisclearbehaviourfromthebirdssuggestingdisturbancethenthephotographer(s)shouldbe askedpolitelytomovefurtheraway.Aresponsiblephotographershouldhavenoproblemretreatingif requested. Asusual,whenthemilitaryareinresidence,donotattempttoenterthesite.
