( June 27 - Lake Fork, TX)... The Fourth Annual Yantis Catfish Classic at Lake Fork was held on June 23-24 at Oak Ridge Marina. This was a big fish competition with anglers competing for the largest catfish in any species. Cash prizes were awarded for the four largest fish caught each hour and bonus checks were paid to the seven anglers weighing the largest fish during the two day event. Bonuses were also paid to the youth, female and senior over 65 who landed the largest fish. A total of 384 catfish anglers participated in the 2012 Tournament. Of those, 40 shared in a portion of the Tournaments $26,000 prize money. For the second straight year channel cats were the only species weighed during the two-day event. The $6000 bonus for the Tournaments biggest fish was awarded to Jesse Williams of Longview, Texas for a 9.80 pound cat caught during the final two hours on Sunday. Williams reported that he used a Catawba worm to trick the big channel. His total winnings, including his hourly award and 1st place bonus, came to $6400. Matraca Driskell of Grapeland landed a 9.45 pound channel cat early Sunday. It took second place overall and earned a $3000 bonus. Including the bonus, her hourly winnings, and $250 award as the Tournaments top female, Ms. Driskell ended the day with checks totaling $3650. Steve Jones of Dallas claimed the $1000 third place bonus for a 7.80 pounder weighed during the last hour of competition on Saturday. Jones became the only angler to take first place in multiple hours when he landed a 7.45 pound channel cat on Sunday. With his two top hourly finishes and bonus, his Tournament payday was $1800. Youth Angler Blake Compton of Chandler took fourth place with a 7.75 pounder weighed at mid-day on Sunday. With the hourly big fish award and an additional $250 reward for being the Tournaments top Youth Angler, Comptons winnings for the weekend totaled $1050. Rounding out the top seven were Youth Angler Hunter Payne, also of Chandler, who tied for fifth with James Prince of New Boston. Chandler and Prince both landed 7.25 pound channel cats and collected $550 for their efforts. Seventh place also ended in a tie between Phil Johnson of Heath and Tad Sheiley of Southlake with 7.15 pounders. With his other hourly winnings, Johnson collected a $1050 while Sheiley earned $350. The most active hourly winner was Troy Amason (Irving) with four money fish. Donnie Fountain ( Jasper, GA), Justin Miles (Lewisville), Roger Stroman (Emory), and 7th place overall finisher Phil
Johnson (Heath) each weighed three fish that collected hourly top-4 earnings. Charles Driskell of Grapeland took the Tournaments top Senior Angler honors and the $250 bonus for his 5.80 pounder and Joe Marler Jr.s name was drawn from among those who registered prior to the early-entry deadline. Marlers timely entry was also worth a $250 cash bonus. The Yantis Catfish Classic was closely linked with the City of Yantis and their eighth annual Catfish Day Festival. Activities in Yantis included a Catfish Day parade on Saturday afternoon after the tournament weigh-in was completed. The Parade Marshal, Yantis City Secretary Tonya Norris, led the procession through downtown Yantis along with Yantis Mayor Jerry Miller. Numerous local businesses and civic groups as well as anglers from the BPS Big Cat Quest Tour participated in the parade to show off their state-of-the-art cat-fishing craft. At the conclusion of the parade, the Tournament anglers and other area residents were treated to the annual fish fry prepared by the Yantis Volunteer Fire Department. The annual Yantis Catfish Classic is a cooperative effort of the Lake Fork Sportsmans Association and Ken Freeman Outdoors Promotions. It is open to all anglers, but it is also a part of the Bass Pro Shops Big Cat Quest Tournament Trail. The next stop on the Big Cat Trail is The World Championship of Catfishing on July 7 at Savannah, Tennessee. After an additional Mississippi River event in August, the Quest concludes with its National Championship on September 1-2 at Clarksville, Tennessee. The Big Cat Quests major sponsors are Bass Pro Shops, Toyota Trucks, Berkley, and Coca-Cola. More on the Big Cat Quest can be found at the Ken Freeman Promotions web site. The Lake Fork Sportsmans Association is a local non-profit organization that was formed in 1999 to promote and help conserve Lake Fork as a world-class fishery. Its members are mainly lake-area homeowners, businesses, and guides. More information on the Association and its mission can be found on its web site, www.lakeforksa.com. The Catfish Classics major underwriters were the Bass Pro Shops, City National Bank, the Wood County Industrial Commission, and the City of Yantis. Other major contributors included the Oak Ridge Marina, Martins Fishermans Inn, and S&A Sportswear of Quitman. KMOO 99.9 FM served as the events official radio station. The 2013 event is scheduled for the weekend of June 22 & 23. For more information about the 2012 tournament, please call the Tournament Director, Sam Scroggins, at 903-763-2191.

of 21. Their scales read 14.125 lbs. We tried every way we could to take care of that fish, but she was pretty weak by the time we got her to Toledo Town. She ultimately died, so will not be entered into the Toledo Lunker Program, but information and pictures of the catch are being sent to Sabine Parish Tourism where the Toledo Top 100 list is kept. If that fish was caught during the spawn and she was full of eggs, it could very easily have been the new lake record, stated Todd Driscoll, TPWD Biologist. It is certainly the biggest fish I have ever caught!

Todd Driscoll pulled out a win on Lake Sam Rayburn Saturday, June 30 for the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series, operated by American Bass Anglers, Southeast Texas Division 10 final tournament with a limit weight of 17.91 lbs. To all accounts fishing was tough that weekend due to the heat, but it seems that Driscoll has a knack for knowing where and when to fish in the hotter months.

Todd Driscoll shows off the fish that clenched him the win in the Boater Division
Chad Taylor with his 10.75 lb Big Bass that scored him the win in the Co-Angler Division
Driscoll said that he caught all of his fish early between 6:15 a.m. and 8 a.m. on a bare steep drop approximately 15-25 feet deep on a spoon. He said he fished both shallow and deep. The one spot he could count on that morning did him no favors after lunch
as he returned to try to catch more sizable fish, but was unable to hook any. He said that he feels like he just made the right decision at the right time to fish that hole, otherwise he wouldnt have caught what he did. Driscoll is sponsored by Lowrance Electronics, Phoenix Boats, Yamaha Outboards, Niceboats.com, Reaction Innovations, St. Croix Rods, Izor Line, Wave Away, and Dirty Jigs Tackle. Driscoll said that without his Lowarnce Electronics with structure scan he wouldnt have found a fish that day. Randy Millender was second in the boaters division with a limit weighing 16.59 lbs with a 4.92 lbs big bass and Charles Dicky Newberry came in third with a limit weighing 14.46 lbs including Dicky Newberry had an early lead with 14.46 lbs, but landed in 3rd behind Driscoll and Millender
a 4.73 lbs big fish. Chad Taylor was the top co-angler for that weekend weighing in two fish, of a three fish limit, with a total of 12.61 lbs. The unique aspect of Taylors weigh in is that fact that one of his two fish weighed an impressive 10.75 lbs! He said he caught smaller fish early in the morning and lost a few keepers but caught the big fish around 7 a.m. He used a Carolina Rig power worm and fished a point about 25 feet deep at the south end of the lake. He says that his 10.75 lbs big fish is the biggest hes ever caught. Blake Harvey finished in second in the co-angler division with a three bass limit of 8.83 lbs while Henry Bo Trotty came in third with two bass weighing in at 8.33 lbs including a 6.61 lbs big fish. Anglers also competed for a spot in the Early Times flipping

Jasper native and pro angler Todd Faircloth has sealed in his first win since 2008 at the Bassmaster Elite Mississippi River Rumble June 21-24 in LaCrosse, WI with a four day total of 62 pounds and four ounces. A solid pound and four ounces clinched in the win over other competitors. Faircloth won $100,000 plus the Power-Pole Captains cash of $1,000 and the Carhartt Big Bass of $750 (plus $750 additional if the angler was wearing Carhartt clothing) with a 5.3 lbs fish on day two of the tournament, which he split with another angler who weighed in a fish of the same weight. He also won instant qualification in the 2013 Bassmaster Classic on Grand Lake out of Tulsa, Okla. Faircloth spent his time fishing in really shallow grassy areas with top water lures and Yamamoto creature baits. He also fished a spot about three to five feet deep where he worked a shad bait hed modified with frog hooks. As for the tournament, I made good decisions on where to start and where to finish, he said. Faircloth said that only moments before needing to head in towards the weigh-in he decided to move to another spot and cast, where he caught a three and a half pound fish that sealed the deal, Thats probably what won the tournament for me, he said.
He said that hed found potential in one certain area of the river during practice, and that area happened to pay off in the long run; however, that

he struggled throughout the day on Sunday, the final day, June 24. He said he had about 12 pounds early in the day but Then I really struggled the rest of the day, he said. I felt like the flipping bite would have turned on when the sun got up, but I couldnt get anything going. I couldnt catch them on topwaters, and I flipped and flipped and couldnt get bite. Faircloth said that he was raised on and still enjoys Lake Sam Rayburn and the grassy flats of the Mississippi were similar to his home lake. He led for two days of the event, but he really didnt feel like he had the win until he caught that final three-pounder. Currently he is fishing the Green Bay Challenge on Lake Michigan in Green Bay, Wisconsin but his eye is on a different prize; the award for Angler of the Year. The River Rumble win boosted him from sixth to second in the points in the race for Angler of the Year, he is only trailing behind by 18 points meaning that the Green Bay Challenge could be his chance to lock in victory on that front as well.
Faircloth said that the Green Bay Challenge is the next to last tournament in the series and that the final event, the Ramada Championship, will take place on Lake Oneida in Syracruse, New York where the Angler of the Year will be determined. The Bassmaster Elite Series currently hosts 98 anglers, for more information on the tournament series and for videos of the big day visit http://www.bassmaster.com/elite Faircloth is sponsored by Yamaha, Sebile, Jerry Yamamoto Custom Baits, All Terrain Tackle Jigs, Castaway, Berkley Trilene, Spyder Wire, Abu Garcia, Lowrance, and Yamamoto. UPDATE Todd finished 29th in the Green Bay Challenge on Lake Michigan that concluded 7/1/12 securing a 3rd place position in the Angler of the Year race for the Bassmaster Elite Series. There are only two events to go before the Elite championship 8/23-26 on Oneida Lake and 9/20-21 on Lake Shelbyville. Good luck Todd!

Cheaper gas may be headed our way soon, but that may not be good news for your lawn mower or boat motor, according to the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI).

Right now you can pump E10 (10 percent ethanol added) at most gas stations, but the EPA has approved E15 gas, and as it becomes more readily available this summer, prices will be less. There will be a sign on the pump advising consumers that E15 should only be used in newer vehicles, model year 2001 and newer, and not for any other power equipment. OPEI is advising consumers that E15 is dangerous and may destroy or damage generators, chains saws, utility vehicles, lawn mowers, boats and marine engines, motorcycles, and four-wheelers, and they dont think a sign on the pump is going to be sufficient. It has always been that whatever was safe to put in your car was safe to put in your equipment, said Kris Kiser, president of OPEI. Suddenly, in one fell swoop, that is no longer the case. When the EPA led the transition to unleaded fuels, their own reports show a mis-fueling rate of nearly 15 percent, ten years after the introduction of unleaded gasoline, and even with a physical barrier at the pumps. Between cheaper prices and general consumer disregard of warning labels, OPEI anticipates that dealers and service departments can expect many problems. Small engine-powered equipment is not designed to run on anything greater than E10; E15 can result in irreversible engine damage and expose operators to safety risks, according to OPEI. The National Petrochemical and Refiners Association said, The EPAs decision to rely solely on retail gasoline pump labels to protect consumers from mis-fueling with gasoline containing 15 percent ethanol is woefully inadequate. The bottom line: its up to you to avoid it.

Recent rains in the area have really put a damper on summer fun but have also offered relief from the scorching summer heat. One great benefit seems to be that the lakes have risen quite tremendously over the past few months coming from near nonexistence during the 2011 drought back to a normal pool elevation. Experts on the local lakes (Toledo Bend, Sam Rayburn, and B.A. Steinhagen a.k.a Dam B) all agree that although it seems like the areas have gotten a lot of rain, in fact more than usual for this time of the year, that it still doesnt make a huge difference in the lake levels. Essentially, they are saying that although rain does help the lake maintain and increase in elevation levels it still isnt necessarily going to flood overnight. David LaRue of the Army Corps of Engineers said that as far as the generation of electricity out of Rayburn goes, well yeah,[ it helps] when the lake is up, it would make more [electricity] available more water can be released when the lake is up. As far as the fear of flooding goes, LaRue doesnt necessarily see that being a problem yet, the lake is still under flood storage, we still have a little over a foot to hit flood storage, its not unusual [for the water level] to be this high. The rains weve had here on Sam Rayburn is almost like a drop in a big puddle, [the lake] is 114,500 acres, its a big lake, he said when explaining what impact a few inches of rain can make. LaRue also said that if flooding were ever a predicted problem that there would be several different plans of action to take because of how far the lake stretches. Thered be so many variations, like how much water is in the lake, where it [excessive waters] was at, if a storm was coming this way the guys in Ft. Worth would know when we should start releasing water so not to flood homes down south [end of the lake], he said. As far as any future predictions go, he admits that he cant predict completely what will happen with the pool level, but unless its a lot of rain I wouldnt expect it to [go up a lot.] Large as this lake is, it would take a lot of rain to reach flood pool. Steven Dougharty with the Texas side of the Sabine River Authority over Toledo Bend said that although the lake is at what is considered a normal elevation, they are still not able to generate much electricity.
[Toledo Bend] is back up to what we consider a relatively normal level, he said but also added that we cease generation [of electricity] at 168 [pool level], when were in the power sales contract months, right now theyre not generating any because they know they will run out of water, we are just releasing a minimum downstream flow. As for the recent rains in the area, he says, overall theres not a real significant impact right now, theres not a lot of runoffs so far, it keeps the evaporation rate down, and keeps us from having to release as much for downstream flow. Right now even B.A. Steinhagen isnt quite at flood pool, sitting at an elevation of 82.15 msl while the flood pool is at 83 and Rayburns current elevation is at 163.09 and the normal pool is 164.4. Toledo is at a pool of 169.05 currently but the conservation pool elevation is 172. The drought that plagued the entire area during 2011 and shut down many boat ramps on both Rayburn and Toledo Bend seems to be in remission with the forecasts of rainfall still coming in through the rest of the summer. This will give the lakes a period to recuperate from the drought conditions and also provide some cooler days for those in southeast Texas and western Louisiana.

The D-Shad is a new breed of soft plastic jerk bait. It has a streamlined body designed to give that side-to-side twitching action, but the tail is thicker and heavier so when you kill the bait it sinks level and gives a little shimmy. It will work great by itself weightless for twitching, but also give it a try on your Carolina Rig, or behind your Chatterbaits or Scroungers. However you use the new D-Shad you are sure to catch them!

taxidermy work. The hunts are for desert bighorn sheep, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, and white-tailed deer. Another example is the Texas Gator Hunt. This hunt is for a trophy alligator on the J.D. Murphree Wildlife Management Area with all the equipment, guide, lodging, and skinning included. The cost to enter the drawing for these hunts is 10 dollars at license retailers or 9 dollars online (www.tpwd.state.tx.us). A person can enter as many times as they would like, but each transaction will have a 5 dollar administrative fee attached. There are many ways to get that desired hunt of a lifetime. Several of these ways are actually affordable and offered through the state. So dust off that old hunting gear and take part in some of the chances available. Life is more exciting outdoors.

August 2012 and the heat is on here on Big Sam with plenty of summer fun for everyone. Remember to keep plenty of water, juice, or soft drinks in the cooler. A wet towel around your neck can help with the brutal afternoon heat. When the towel gets dry, dunk it in the lake. Wear loose Lynn Atkinson fitting, light weight clothing and put cell 979-220-0251 on sun screen. Little things can make Reel Um N Guide your fishing trip more enjoyable. Service, Sam Rayburn is in great shape with www.rayburncountry.com the rains that we got in July. The rains helped knock the heat down and added more water to the lake. The lily pads are starting to look good and the hydrilla has been coming back slowly in the shallows. There are also a few spotty places showing a little deeper grass. The top water bite has been slow with a few early and late afternoon bites on the Ribbits and Pop-Rs. Lots of small fish on Senkos and wacky worms off
the edges. Now here are some more oldies that have proving their catching ability over the years; buzz bait and Spook Jr. These oldies have caught fish all over the world and still are favorites with many fishermen. Something new on the scene and that has shown me that it works is the Hunchback by Strike Pro. Its got a great wobble and sound that drives bass wild when worked around the grass edges. Work it around the open pockets around the thick stuff where the bass are hiding out. These are also good to catch some of the schoolies that will be out chasing shad off the main lake points and humps. These schoolies can be a lot of fun for everyone and can sometimes save a day on the lake when the bass have lock jaw. The crankbait and spinner bait will be good around the grass edges and off the points early and late and you can cover lots of water
looking for active fish. Look for some bass to hang out off the long points and ledges in 8 to 20 ft of water for the summer. Thats where you switch over to a Carolina or Texas rig and do a lot of dragging. Lets not forget the Stanley football jig as its a great tool to catch some big fish all year. Crappie will be out around most of the stumps this time of year. Moving from stump to stump can put some nice slabs in the boat. The 147 bridge will still put out some nice fish and you can stay in the shade most of the day. Crappie fishing this time of year can be a lot of fun for everyone as you catch everything from catfish, bass to perch out there. Grab the kids, come on and enjoy the great outdoors. I have a pontoon boat that can handle up to 8 anglers with plenty of shade. Oh yeah, we have a port a potty too. Thanks and God Bless!

Sam Rayburn still isnt pulling any punches with anglers in search of big sacks of bass. Its been tough getting decent size fish for several weeks and July 14 was no different for Bass N Bucks teams. Charlie King and Clifford McCarty won way ahead of the rest of the pack, largely due to their kicker and Big Bass of the tournament weighing in at 9.13 lbs. Weather wise it was a beautiful day to be anywhere outside, many would attest that it seemed to be perfect fishing conditions with temps in the low 80s, plenty of cloud cover, and isolated showers. That is almost unheard of for Texas in mid July. Still, the seemingly perfect conditions did not prove to be conducive to getting bass to bite. As the weigh in began, the downpour commenced, soaking nearly everyone! With only four fish in their sack, Charlie King and Clifford McCarty won the second of three Summer Series events on Rayburn, having a total official weight of 16.81 lbs. Staying in areas with deep ridges up to 30, they used Texas rigged 10 Zoom worms in a junebug color as well as jigs. It was a really slow day for us as far as catching fish, really pitiful. We caught our first around 9:30am,
and it was just a dink. At 11:30 they made the catch that anchored their win. We had gone to a deep creek, and I threw my Texas rig to the edge of it. It was probably about 23, and there was a big

ol stump there. Clifford landed the big brute that weighed in at 9.13 lbs, winning Big Bass honors for the day. At that point we then had two in the boat, the big one and a dink. After lunch we managed two more before we had to come in. Their four fish was more than enough for a 1st place win. The weight for 2nd place dropped all the way down to 11.77 lbs, caught by Jaymie & Richard Massey. This was Jaymies first tournament, and Richard took her to a good frog fishing spot. I had never fished with frogs before, so I missed a few good ones while I was trying to get the hang of it, Jaymie explained. Even though trailering is allowed in all Bass N Bucks tournaments, they stayed in close proximity to the Umphrey Pavilion due to the inclement weather. We stayed in grassy areas and fished with frogs all day, Richard added. As long as there was cloud cover, wed catch fish. When the sun came out we didnt catch anything. Jaymie caught their kicker weighing in at 4.35 lbs, and they had a limit by 11:15. We only caught five keepers all day. It was a good day, though. We dodged all of the lightening, got attacked by spiders, and missed a jet skier in our path that apparently didnt see us! Jason Wells fished by himself this tournament, as his partner
Vic Cooper couldnt make this one. It was raining this morning at take-off, so I trailered to my fishing spot. Targeting brush tops in 15-20 of water, he struggled for a limit. It was just slow all day. Using a Carolina rig on Lews reels and Dobyns rods in the brush tops, he slowly pecked out a limit. I caught my last keeper at 1:30, and only caught five keepers all day. I tried several spots that youre usually sure to catch a few solid fish off of, and didnt catch anything from any of them. It was tough! Jason would like to thank Champion, Mercury, Shelby Savings Bank, AFI Unlimited and Town & Country Marine. Rounding out the top five were 4th place winners John Hope & Dayton Isaacs with 11.13 lbs, and 5th place Walter Land & Dean Brown with 10.57 lbs. The next and last event for the Bass N Bucks Sam Rayburn Summer Series will be held August 4 at the Umphrey Family Pavilion. Final Championship qualifiers will be determined at that event. Anyone is welcome to fish every open season tournament, so dont miss your chance! For more information click to www.BassNBucks.com or call tournament director Bryan Davis at 469-955-7808.
Jason Wells fished by himself to secure a 3rd place win with 11.34 lbs.

Elshout & Price come out on top at Bass N Bucks Summer Series #2 on Toledo
By Patty Lenderman
Tight weights for the top teams in Bass N Bucks Toledo Series #2 on July 15th! Only three ounces separated 1st and 2nd place with Martin Elshout and Mark Price coming out on top with their 22.39 lb limit. It was another in a string of cool summer days with temps only reaching the low 80s. Rain has been in the forecast and hit in isolated thunderstorms keeping temps cool with overcast skies. Anglers were allowed to launch wherever they would like to on the lake with the weigh in being held at Big Bass Marina. Some came in by boat and others trailered to the weigh in. Martin Elshout and Mark Price were among the first to the scales, first weighing their kicker for Big Bass honors. It locked in at 7.50 lbs and held as the biggest bass of the tournament. Adding their other four their total weight was 22.39 lbs. They had a long wait until the scales were closed as most of the rest of the teams came to weigh. We had a limit by about 7:30am from our first stop. It was a deep ridge, around 20, and we used drop shots and crank baits. Once they put their initial limit together, they tried some other areas to attempt to increase their weight. Our second spot was only about 12 deep, and I switched to a football jig, Elshout explained. Thats where I caught the 7.50 lbr. Their first cull had increased their total weight by several pounds, but their day was not done yet. We hit some other deep water spots with a Carolina rig, and caught one here and one there. We were able to cull three more, and only weighed one from our first spot by the end of the day. It was a good day, and we probably caught around 40 fish. They won 1st place overall and would like to thank Ranger, Mercury, Ludwig Brothers Marine and Kistler Rods. Bill Norred & Rich Remedies landed a 2nd place finish with 22.11 lbs. We started out our day using shaky head jigs and had a limit by around 9:30. They continued to bite well until 10am then, we only caught small ones from then to about 11:30. They tried a variety of spots some in deep water 20-40, others ranging 12-17. We caught some on crank baits too, but most of our fish were caught on shaky heads and Texas rigged Ol Monster worms. They made their last cull of the day at
Among the first to weigh in, Martin Elshout and Mark Prices 22.39 lb sack held for a 1st place finish. They also won Big Bass with their 7.50 lb kicker 1:45, but it was just an increase by a few ounces. We would like to thank our wives for all of their encouragement and support!
Weights were tight, Rich Remedies and Bill Norred took 2nd place with 22.11 lbs
Harold Allen and Glen Freeman won 3rd place overall with 19.88 lbs
Harold Allen & Glen Freeman also had a nice limit bringing in 19.88 lbs for a 3rd place overall finish. It was really, really slow for us. We went to three different spots before we got our first bite! Harold stated. Glen broke the ice with a three pounder then they began assembling their limit. They were fishing main lake ridges in depths up to 22, using a combination of jigs and 10 Texas rigged worms. Glen lost one that seemed to be a pretty good one. He just couldnt get a hook in her. Thats just the way it goes sometimes! They caught seven nice keepers and were able to cull up a few times to their final weight. Harold would like to thank Skeeter, Yamaha SHO, Vicious, MinnKota, IRods, Humminbird
and US Reels. Glens sponsors include Ranger, Yamaha, Lowrance, Shimano, Lews, Seaguar, Nichols Marine, Yum and Bomber. Rounding out the top five includes 4th place winners Randy Despino & Kevin Lasyone with 19.10 lbs, and Scooter Clark & Ryan Pinkston in 5th place with 18.63. There are only three tournaments in the Summer Series, and there is one left to go for Toledo. It will be held August 5 back at Big Bass Marina. All regular season events are open to anyone who would like to fish. For more information click to www.BassNBucks.com or call tournament director Bryan Davis at 469-955-7808

Approximately 2 Million Florida Largemouth Bass Stocked at Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend
By Todd Driscoll (Texas Parks and Wildlife Department)
Fish stockings have been used for many years to develop populations in new reservoirs and supplement populations in existing reservoirs. Texas has a long history with fish stockings, going back to the 1890s with the U.S. Commission of Fish and Fisheries. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), then known as the Texas Game, Fish, and Oyster Commission, began stocking hatchery-raised largemouth bass in 1941. Hatchery production greatly increased during the 1960s, which resulted in more widespread stockings. Up through the 1970s, only native northern largemouth bass (NLMB) were stocked. During that period, TPWD started to experiment with the Florida largemouth bass (FLMB), a largemouth bass subspecies native to Florida and southern Georgia. Earlier work by California indicated FLMB had superior growth rates and greater potential to reach larger sizes when compared to NLMB. In 1972, TPWD introduced FLMB into public reservoirs. The FLMB stocking program has been extremely successful in many of our reservoirs, and TPWD has verified that FLMB attain a greater maximum size than the native NLMB. For example, the long-standing 1943 state record largemouth bass of 13.5 pounds
was broken in 1980 by a FLMB weighing 14.1 pounds. Since then, many fish exceeding the 1980 record have been caught, and the current state record is 18.18 pounds (1992). It now takes a fish over 15.3 pounds to be listed in the top 50 largemouth bass caught in Texas! A common misconception is that FLMB are stocked in reservoirs to increase overall bass numbers. However, the total number of young bass surviving each year is primarily limited by habitat conditions and food availability, resulting in strong year classes of bass some years and weak year classes in others. Typically, natural bass reproduction (i.e., no stocking) will maximize reservoir carrying capacity each year. Therefore, stocking FLMB does not increase total bass numbers, but increases the percentage of FLMB in the population which increases the trophy bass potential. The primary goal of FLMB stockings in Texas is to enhance production of large fish (> 8 pounds). Stocking requests from biologists throughout the state are prioritized based on the trophy potential of each reservoir. Therefore, nearly all of the statewide production of FLMB is stocked into lakes that have a history of producing high numbers of fish > 8 pounds. Both Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend support high-profile bass fisheries, produce
trophy-size fish, and are highly prioritized when compared to other reservoirs in the state. As a result, FLMB stockings have been stocked annually on both Sam Rayburn (since 1994) and Toledo Bend (since 1990, except for 2006). Each year, Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend are initially allocated 500,000 FLMB fingerlings. If our hatchery staff has an above average production year, then a majority of the surplus FLMB are stocked at Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend. In 2012, our hatchery system had an outstanding year and we stocked a total of 2.0 million FLMB fingerlings in Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend. Due to the high numbers of fish stocked, the stockings were widespread at both reservoirs. To maximize survival, fish are stocked into areas of aquatic vegetation. At Sam Rayburn, all areas below Deer Stand/Jackson Hill Marina with aquatic vegetation were stocked with FLMB. At Toledo Bend, fish were stocked in most embayments on the Texas side from Indian Creek to Huxley Bay. If you have questions concerning the fisheries of our area lakes, stop by the Inland Fisheries office at the Jasper State Fish Hatchery or contact us by phone (409-698-9114) or email (todd.driscoll@tpwd.state.tx.us). Good luck and good fishing!

Chadd Caperton is the Ag/NR agent for Jasper County and serves as adviser to the Jasper Master Gardeners. Chadd has attended rainwater conservation classes with Billy Kniffen, aka the twoand-a-half minute shower man (Google Kniffen for more info). Life, hanging by a drip It aint over till its over, and by all accounts the drought aint over, even with July rains pushing lake levels to near normal for our part of Texas. Many counties and cities west of us are on water rationing and learning hard lessons in water conservation. Even if you have a river at your back door and a well that never falters, you might want to consider some advantages of rainwater harvesting and drip irrigation. Irrigation for your home garden or landscape can carry plants through tough times in August heat, even if you arent there to water.
There are many things to consider: What soil type are you working with? What plants are you trying to maintain? Are you using mulch? What environmental factors are affecting the plants water consumption such as temperature and humidity? What is the growing season for those plants? Many native plants will hunker down in Augusteither theyre done for the year, or waiting for cooler fall weather for one last sprint before frost. Ornamental plants from nurseries may not know this trick. You paid for them, and now you want to keep them alive. Here are some tips to protect your investment: Soil type probably has the greatest impact on plants as it dictates moisture control and availability as well as nutrient availability. Sandy soils allow water to penetrate deeply in a short amount of time, reducing the amount of water needed to reach
desired depth--but they do not hold water for long. They also allow nutrients to leach out quicker. Clay soils take more time for water to penetrate to desired depth, thus using more water, but hold that water for longer and nutrients also stay in the soil longer. There are drawbacks to each type of extreme which explains why many gardeners amend poor soils with mixes to try for optimal soil condition that allows good water penetration, nutrient management, and moisture retention. Mulching also helps with all three needs. Assuming we have the desired soil type lets consider a few different ways to successfully irrigate our gardens and landscape. Keep in mind that each has its pros and cons so you must evaluate your individual needs to determine which system will work best.
Emitters in any size and height can be attached to irrigation hose exactly where you need them.
Chadd Caperton conducts first rain barrel class for Jasper Master Gardeners.
Key things to remember: When possible, avoid wetting foliage because this opens the opportunity for fungus and disease. Keep the source of the water as close to the soil as possible to avoid splash back onto foliage, and also to water loss due to evaporation. Try to keep the water droplets as large as possible; avoid fine mists mainly because of evaporation. I recommend drip irrigation over spray or broadcast because it reduces water loss and keeps plant foliage dry. Use a system that allows you to irrigate deeply, 8-10 inches deep at a time but infrequently (always be subject to the plant in mind). Watering too often and too shallow causes roots to grow shallow. Watering deeply but less frequently causes roots to grow deeper, aiding in times of water shortage. Soaker hoses are a popular choice and offer a wide range of types and materials. Some can be buried under mulch and work very well. This is where it pays to buy quality because others can deteriorate and leak causing uneven watering and waste. Other options include solid hose tapes with water outlets set at intervals along the length of the hose. Use these where plants are further apart and watering may not be desired in between plants. Or use a solid hose design with emitters that can be placed manually at intervals set by you. Most systems have several types of emitters available with height adjustment for potted plants, flexible hose extenders for hard to reach areas, and adjustable rate emitters for setting different drip rates for different types of plants in the same area.
Once you have chosen a suitable irrigation system you can then begin looking at how you will implement your watering schedule. I recommend a manual schedule simply because checking soil moisture is important for most plants and especially for those that do not like wet feet, but also because I have seen too many lawns being watering automatically in the middle of a storm. However, if you need an automatic system because you travel often or are only home on weekends and not there to monitor water needs, then there are several systems available with timers. Some are set with pins; more sophisticated versions can be set or changed by your smart phone, where you can also check weather conditions at home. Check water pressure if you are on a city water supply. Some have been high enough to blow out emitters; then you come home to a pond in the yard. PSI rates should be listed on any brand you buy. If you do find that you need a regulator, you can pick one up at any hardware store. Most are relatively simple to install. Most of these systems can also be connected to a rainwater harvesting system. More and more people are hooking rain barrels to their downspouts to collect what nature provides for free. Several barrels can be ganged together and then attached to a drip irrigation system for dry weeks. Remember, more water is not always better. For more information on irrigation, rainwater harvesting or any other topic call our office at 409-384-3721.

Ask any angler at your local tackle shop their opinion of whats the best bait for bass fishing and you will receive a variety of replies. The plastic worm is certainly on the list, spinnerbaits are great, topwaters are fun to fish, crankbaits catch their share, a jigging spoon can catch them when its tough, and I know that many will say the jig-n-pig. Well I would like to add a variation of the jig-n-pig to the answers and it is a swim jig. The swim jig begins with a lead-head but most head designs are somewhat pointed which allows the bait to more easily come through grass beds and other types of cover. The line tie is usually at the front of the head instead of on top like a conventional jig, and this allows the bait to cut through the vegetation much easier. Swim jigs need to have a weed-guard that is soft enough for good hook penetration but with just the right stiffness to keep it from hanging up. These baits are balanced to come through the water without rolling over and most come with quality ultra sharp hooks. Sizes for the swim jigs range from - -ounce. A few of what I consider excellent swim jigs on the market today include Strike Kings Hack Heavy Cover Jig, Booyahs Swimn Jig, NetBaits Paca Swim Jig, and Stanleys Swim-Max Jig. Colors for the swim jig are a personal issue but I would recommend the black/blue, brown and white. The black/blue is my favorite especially in off-color water because the bass dont get as good a look at the jig when it comes by like they do with a white one. If you are getting strikes but not connecting with the fish, adjust the speed of your retrieve before changing colors. The fun part is deciding on the trailer to place on the hook that will make the lure literally come alive when it hits the water. Plastic craws such as the Chigger Craw, Kickin B Chunk, Paca Chunk, Rage Tail Lobster, are great and believe methere are many more colorful and enticing products to choose from. The larger claws on the trailer not only produce lots of vibration and a tantalizing action to the bait when it is retrieved but they also slow the fall of the bait. A good rule of thumb is that for darker water add a more bulky trailer and for clear water go with a smaller profile. A trick I learned last year is to use a plastic frog such as Stanleys Ribbit on the back of the jig. The legs of the frog give off a tremendous amount of vibration and the bulk of the frogs body will help keep the swim jig from sinking. Swimming a jig is a technique that has caught on across the nation and at times it can be

absolutely deadly. Many tournament pros use a swim jig when the fishing gets tough and they need a go-to bait to catch that $$$ fish. The technique is simple cast the bait out and reel it in. Sometimes an erratic or faster retrieve can work, but day in and day out a slow, steady retrieve with perhaps a few twitches of the rod tip is usually the most productive. Just make sure that you are in contact with the cover you are fishing, so at times you may have to stop the retrieve and let the bait sink a bit. If you keep getting hung-up go to a lighter model jig. The swim jig can be fished at any depth but is probably at its best and most productive within a foot or so of the waters surface and near cover. And when I say cover, this bait is designed to be cast right in the middle of the tough stuff and reeled out with a minimal amount of difficulty. Another plus to the swim jig is that its entry into the water is very quiet and unlike other baits, it rarely spooks the bass. I like to have a bit of wind on the water when fishing the bait and cloudy days can be very productive because the bass tend to move into shallow water feeding areas. Swimming a jig over a partially submerged hydrilla bed is a good way to get your rod jerked out of your hands. Boat docks are another area where the swim jig really shines. Just cast the bait out and swim it thru and around any of the cover and structure that nay be present. Skipping the swim jig way back into a shadowed boat dock area and then reeling the bait quickly is another good way to trigger a bass that may not even look at another lure. Here again the jig is very forgiving on hang-ups and will allow you to easily cast into areas where many other baits cannot be fish effectively. Another reason I like a swim jig is because bass dont see this type of bait nearly as much as a spinnerbait or crankbait. Big bass get wary of the constant bombarding of baits and a swim jig may well be a lure they seldom see. As we approach the late summer, those shallow water areas that have submerged brush extending way out into the lake will be prime spots for swimming a jig. And its also a great night-fishing bait. The swim jig probably imitates a shad or other baitfish and I am sure that as you experiment with the bait you will develop many different techniques that will entice the bass to strike. One thing is for sure, it sure is lots of fun to fish and can attract BIG bass. A few years ago during a club tournament, my partner A.D. White and I put a real toad in the boat on a swim jig and the bass weighed 11-pounds. The swim jig is one of those special baits that will easily allow a beginner to catch bass and an experienced angler to catch more and bigger bass. Give swim jigs a try I think it will be a technique that you will use quite often. -- Good Fishing JB

PLANTING DAYS
Observers wonder why tournament angler Todd Faircloth often has three or four rods lying on his boat deck, each rigged with the same lure, but what they dont realize is that while the lures are alike, the veteran Yamaha Pro has rigged them with different types and weights of lines. As bass begin moving deeper and tighter to summer cover, Faircloth knows choosing the proper line for the conditions hes fishing can be critical to his success. Few issues today confuse bass fishermen more than line choices, says Faircloth, especially since now we have to pick not only the line weight but also the line type, too. Years ago, all we had was monofilament, but today we also have braided and fluorocarbon lines, and I use all three types practically every day. Each line has distinct characteristics, so over the years Ive determined which lines I like best for the types of fishing I do. I spent a lot of time on the water comparing lines, and I think its something every serious bass fisherman needs to do. Perhaps the hardest fishing line decision Faircloth made was to stop using monofilament. Hed been fishing that line for more than two decades, but now he uses mono only w3hen hes making short casts to specific shallow targets like docks and brush, or underneath overhanging tree limbs and branches. With that type of fishing, I use a topwater popping plug almost exclusively, the Yamaha Pro continues, and because
Im making short casts in fairly open water and want a lot of lure action, I tie the popper with a loop knot that works best with monofilament line. I also need more stretch in the line to absorb my hook=-set at close range, and 15 pound monofilament provides that better than fluorocarbon or braided line, neither of which have much stretch at all. While braided line does not stretch, it does offer other advantages Faircloth likes when hes flipping plastic worms and creature baits into heavy vegetation. Braided lines are extremely strong despite their small diameter, and will literally cut through hyacinths and hydrilla if a big bass runs after being hooked. Even though he uses 50 pound test braid, the line is also very sensitive so Faircloth feels strikes easier. I also use braided line when Im fishing lipless crankbaits, because I can make longer casts to cover more water, he adds, and since this type of line has no stretch, I will usually get a good hook-set even when a bass hits at the end of one of those long casts. I also like braided line with lipless crankbaits because I normally fish them right over the top of shallow vegetation, and if the lure gets snagged, I can rip it free and just keep reeling. I use 30 pound braid, too, so it isnt going to break. For essentially all his other types of fishing, including
using jigs, deep diving crankbaits, Texas and Carolina rigs, and even drop-shots, the Yamaha Pro prefers fluorocarbon line. Fluorocarbon is extremely sensitive, has less stretch than monofilament, and is practically invisible under water. Since fluorocarbon also sinks, crankbaits dive slightly deeper, and plastic worms are easier to keep on the bottom. This is when people see me with several rods rigged with the same lure, laughs Faircloth, because Im using different line weights to determine which performs best for that particular type of fishing. Normally, I use 14 pound test fluorocarbon most often, but in deeper water with smaller lures and finesse style presentation I will go as light as 6 pound line, while in heavy cover I may use 25 pound line. There is a lot of difference between 6, 8, and 10 pound fluorocarbon line, so I rig them all to see which I prefer under the conditions Im fishing. Fluorocarbon line had been in use in saltwater fishing for a number of years before it was introduced in bass fishing, concludes the Yamaha Pro, and honestly, I was not impressed with the first fluorocarbon lines I tried. Since then, manufacturers have made a lot of improvements in them, and today these lines are a critical part of my fishing.
