Dear Parishioner,
Fri.
Since being named the bishop of the Diocese of Des Moines His Excellency the Most Reverend Richard E. Pates has endeavored to cultivate a spiritually rich and vibrant Christian community. One such initiative he started last year is the Rural Life Mass. The purpose of this Mass is not only to highlight the agricultural nature of our diocese but also to demonstrate its interconnectedness with the urban community. The Mass is held outside on the land of a Catholic parishioner with ties to agriculture. Following Mass there is a brief address pertaining to the agricultural economy and lifestyle. In this context the bishop hopes to provide the opportunity for people from the city to experience an agricultural setting while at the same time affirming this heritage for those who live it. Last year the Mass was held in Shelby County on the western side of the diocese in the territory of St. Michaels parish in Harlan. This year the bishop has graciously chosen Lucas County as the sight for this years Rural Life Mass. As pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chariton it is my pleasure to host this special event. The Mass will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Sunday August 26, 2012 just to the west of Chariton off Highway 34. It will be held on the land of Mike Curran, a parishioner of Sacred Heart who raises cattle, corn, beans and hay. The speaker for the event will be Ron Rosmann, a member of the board of directors for the National Catholic Rural Life Conference (NCRLC). The Rosmann family organically farms seven hundred acres and has a certified organic beef and hog operation. Mr. Rosmann will speak about the NCRLC and how it can be of assistance. He is married to Maria Vakulskas Rosmann and they have several grown children. You can learn more about their operation at: http://www.organicprairie.com/ product/the_rosmann_family/meet_the_farmer ALL other Masses at Sacred Heart in Chariton, St. Brendan in Leon and St. Francis in Corydon will be canceled for this weekend in order to encourage attendance and facilitate the celebration of this event. Shelter, water and a light lunch will be available. As pastor of Sacred Heart, St. Brendan and St. Francis I would like to have all parishes represented in this event and I urge you to attend if at all possible. Let us all give the Bishop a warm south central Iowa welcome and appreciation for his decision to bless us with this event. Sincerely yours in Christ,
His Excellency the Most Rev. Richard E. Pates has chosen Chariton as the location of this year's Rural Life Mass. An outdoor Mass will be held on August 26, 2012 at 10:30 A.M. just west of town on the north side of Highway 34 (next to Lakeview Golf & Country Club). This celebration has been an initiative of Bishop Pates to not only highlight the rural nature of the diocese but also the interconnectedness of the rural and urban communities. All other Masses at Sacred Heart in Chariton, St. Brendan in Leon and St. Frrancis will be canceled this weekend in order to help coordinate this event and encourage all to attend. The speaker for this year is Ron Rosmann. Please come out to support both the theme of the event as well as our appreciation for the Bishop's decision to honor us with this celebration.
