Unit Summary
Teachers will attend several staff development trainings on how to use a Promethean Board. After the
training and several class facilitations and modeling sessions, teachers will select a lesson plan based upon
their interest. Using the promethean board and software, teachers will develop a flipchart to engage
students in the skills and objectives of the lesson plan. Then, the teacher will use the flipchart during a
class period. Finally, teachers will evaluate and share a formative assessment using Activexpressions with
the class. End product will be a flipchart to be used in class, with at least three different tools, that has an
Activexpression component.

Assessment Process and Purpose of Assessment

Brainstorming Teachers will brainstorm what challenges they are facing in their
ideas of needs classrooms
Brainstorm on Teachers will discuss how the Activstudio software will change their
how class will teaching styles. Ways that students will be able to engage in active
look learning opportunities and with electronic polling
Think-Pair-Share Teachers will discuss in small groups what they want to learn from
the trainings
Examine student Teachers will critique pre-made flipcharts to gain an understanding
work of how flipcharts will transform their teaching style
Project checklist Teachers will rank their current knowledge at the beginning of the
—KWL training session to gauge needs and then re-evaluate at the end of the
modules to measure increase in knowledge—self reflection
assessment.
Project Meetings Periodic meetings will be held individually and as a group to discuss
skills learned and to discover weaknesses and correct them. Also,
discussion will be held to discover what other tools and skills are
desired by the group to still learn. Form of formative assessment to
gauge needs and set goals.
Product Final product will be evaluated for mastery of skills and to revisit
any apparent weaknesses or misunderstandings of the software.
Performance As part of district initiative, administration will conduct an
Evaluation observation to gauge the use of technology during instructional
delivery. A follow up conference will be held between
administration and the teacher.
Teacher led A follow up conference with ITF and teacher will be held to plan for
conference future staff development needs of the teacher as a sign of continuous,
on-going, teacher driven trainings.
On-line quizzes A summative evaluation tool to measure how much teachers have
learned from the training sessions.

Assessing Background Knowledge and Establishing a Foundation

Module 1 for Days 1 & 2

Discuss the need for Promethean Board training with the following essential question

Pose the Essential Question, “Why teach?” Hold a discussion focused on this question and how it relates
to their training. Record responses to essential question and comments on how the Promethean Board will
aid them in teaching on a flipchart.

Present the agenda and PB training manual and discuss administration and district expectations.

Begin introducing fundamentals of Activstudio as decided during group discussions. Show how to
accomplish a task on the board and then have teachers repeat it using their own laptop. This part addresses
the content question of “What is a Promethean Board?” By the end of the lesson teachers should be able
to answer the unit question of “Why are Promethean Boards important?”

End training session with a tie in to essential question of “Why Teach?” into how these could help them
with their previous answers. A KWL/Venn Diagram will be filled out during the initial training and then
revisited at the end session.

Module 2 for Days 3 & 4

Ask essential question again of “Why Teach?” Ask each group member to come to board to repeat a
variety of skills learned. Lead a discussion to summarize students’ findings, and make clarifications and
additions as needed. Have students think about and discuss briefly their thoughts on the Unit Question,
Why are Promethean Boards important? Relate unit question to goals of Module 2. Repeat process from
Module 1 of showing tools and giving them time to use them on their laptop. Tools covered are decided
by the teachers. This part addresses the content question of “What are some of the bells and whistles with
this board?”

Module 3—Days 6-8

In answer to the unit question of Instructional Technology Facilitator will visit the classroom three times in
a four week period.
Day 6—During this time, the ITF will model the use of the board during one lesson based upon the
teacher’s lesson plans and specific requests and needs of the teacher. In a post conference, “How will I
use this board in the classroom?” should be satisfactorily answered. In addition, the unit question of “Why
do we need formative assessments?” will be discussed.
Day 7—ITF will train the teacher and class on how to use activexpressions based upon specific needs and
requests of the teacher. This will address the content question of, “How are activexpression used to create
formative assessments?” Next, the ITF will help the teacher during a lesson creating a formative
assessment with activexpressions.
Day 8—Finally, the classroom teacher will download and transform a flipchart to use in her class with the
help of the ITF. The ITF (their role will only be for support as needed) will be in the classroom when the
teacher uses her flipchart and activexpressions. This flipchart will be one downloaded from Promethean
Planet and adapted to meet the needs of her lesson.

Module 4
Day 9-10
Teacher will attend a training session to create a flipchart made from scratch. Before leaving the teacher
will feel comfortable with the flipchart and be prepared to use it in front of a class.

ITF will attend class session in which teacher uses her flipchart made from scratch. There will be a
formative assessment piece in the flipchart.

Post conference teacher-led conference as a wrap up

Revisit KWL/Venn Diagram started during first session at end of last session.

Module 5
On their own, the teachers will complete Activstudio Training on line with 5 quizzes to evaluate their
knowledge of the program. A hundred percent on all quizzes are required to receive credit for the training.

Finally step will be evaluation by administrators during an official class observation.
