At the international real estate event MIPIM in Cannes, the future Siemens headquarters for the Middle East region in Masdar City will receive a MIPIM Architectural Review Future Projects Award. The building is part of a long-term strategic partnership between Siemens and Masdar, an initiative started up in Abu Dhabi for the utilization of renewable energy sources. Designed by the famous British architecture company Sheppard Robson and optimized in cooperation with Siemens Real Estate (SRE), the building will meet top requirements in terms of architecture, energy efficiency and equipment.
Currently one of the largest urban construction projects in the Middle East, Masdar City is being built near Abu Dhabi, with overall completion scheduled to take a number of years. When finished, it will reflect superlative energy standards and accommodate 50,000 people who will live, work and do research there. In the context of the strategic partnership with the Masdar initiative, Siemens is moving its headquarters for the Near and Middle East to Masdar City. Although still in course of realization, this new corporate location has been named winner of the MIPIM Architectural Review Future Projects Awards at the MIPIM real estate fair in March 2012, in the office building category. This prize is presented yearly for outstanding civil engineering projects. The jury gave the following reasons for their decision: "This is a thorough investigation of the design of large floorplate space in an extreme climate, with a well explained proposition emerging. The ambition for a LEEDPlatinum-rating means the project will be followed by many designers and clients with great interest."
With the aid of the latest materials and technologies, the energy consumption of the new building is planned to be comparable with that of a German low-energy office block, even though the climate of the desert region around Masdar poses a challenge in the form of summer temperatures above 50C. This results in a 45 percent reduction in energy consumption and a 50 percent reduction in water consumption compared with the international acknowledged ASHRAE standard. The high energy efficiency primarily comes from the design as a box within a box, a highly-insulated,
