Selection of the design of forest roads due to the resistance of

the soil in an environmentally friendly construction.
Ilias Mel. Sfyridis, Panagiotis Ch. Eskioglou
Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
Department of Forestry & Natural Environment
Laboratory of Mechanical Sciences and Topography
Abstract
The construction of forest roads is a serious interference with the natural
environment, which may be in addition to a variety of positive and negative
consequences. Therefore the design of forest roads should be given due
attention to protecting the environment and the careless use of road
aggregates. To achieve this goal and played a crucial role in the sizing of the
pavement, having a direct connection with the use of inert materials. The
purpose of this study was to examine whether making a change from low
ground resistance to ground greater strength could lead to an
environmentally-friendly construction. Calculated based on the Greek
method of calculating pavement thickness ratio for different values of CBR
soil and amount of timber carried, the SN ratio of pavement thickness and
the extra length of road that can be cast from the material savings.
Concluded that it is preferable to choose a new development on land greater
resistance when the road construction cost exceeds the cost of boring
because we save so large quantities of paving materials and quantities of
energy while protecting the environment.
