Indias federal cabinet decided in 2006 to fully exit their venture with the Japanese automaker Suzuki. The government sold its equity of 10.27 per cent in the Maruti Udyog Limited which is currently the largest automaker in India. The then Finance Minister P Chidambaram said in a statement that the governments stake in the company would be sold to banks and financial institutions within that financial year or the next expecting to raise 600 million US dollars through this deal considering the then market value of the company. The Maruti-Suzuki which entered in to our country three decades back with 26% of its stake as a Joint venture has at last gained 54.2% of the stake in the company gaining total controlling power on it. It was the first company in India to mass-produce and sell more than a million cars. It is largely credited for having brought in an automobile revolution to India. It is the market leader in India, and on 17 September 2007, Maruti Udyog Limited was renamed as Maruti Suzuki India Limited. The company's headquarters are on Nelson Mandella Rd, New Delhi. sold its 10th million vehicle in India.

Until recently, 18.28% of the company was owned by the Indian government, and 54.2% by Suzuki of Japan. The BJP-led government held an initial public offering of 25% of the company in June 2003. As of 10 May 2007, the government of India sold its complete share to Indian financial [7] institutions and no longer has any stake in Maruti Udyog.

Now The Company is a subsidiary of Suzuki Motor Corporation, Japan, which owns 54.2 per cent of
Maruti Suzuki. The rest is owned by public and financial institutions. It is listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange of India.
