Nothing can truly capture the exquisite
pleasure of time spent in Italy, but theres
a way to come close here in San Diego:
Join us at the San Diego Italian Film
Festival, from October 26th through
November 11th for feStivale 2012. SDIFF
wi// present seventeen fabu/ous ji/ms that
will transport us into the rich Italian life
we want to discover and inhabit, with
laughs, music, tears and insights.
Inc/uded in the /ine-up is a retrospective of acc/aimed ji/m director Nanni Moretti,
ojten ca//ed the Woody A//en of Ita/y (more acerbic, more po/itica/, but equa//y absurd).
Whi/e it is impossib/e to cover the who/e of Ita/ian /ife, the themes and the /oud critiques
that /ife stimu/ates, the ji/ms qive us an exce//ent p/ace at the tab/e in the center of a very
busy piazza. Caro diario (Dear diary, ipp}) and Il caimano (The Caiman, zoo)
are ear/ier works, but we' // a/so show Moretti's /atest ji/m, Habemus Papam
(We Have a Pope, zoii), winner of numerous awards a// over Europe.
Wherever you /ook in our feStiva/e schedu/e, you' // jind fascination and /ife at fu// ti/t.
Benvenuti al sud (We/come to the South) turns on its head the aqe o/d prejudice of
Italys north toward its south. Mine vaganti (Loose Cannons) by Turkish-born director
Ferzan Ozpetek is a hi/arious portrait of a fami/y enmeshed in conj/ict caused by qenera-
tional issues and sexual identities. Dont miss Passione, actor director ]ohn Turturro's
exuberant tribute to the sonqs and sinqers of Nap/es, Ita/y, the second of our three Musica/
Movies series.
The feStiva/e parties are the best in town. At the head of the festiva/ parade is a dashinq
members-only party (become a Member and come to the party!) at the La ]o//a shores.
C/osinq the feStiva/e is the Ga/a, one of the most passionate, de/icious and fun eveninqs
in town everyone is invited!
So here's what you qet Ita/y's best ji/mmakers, rewardinq perspectives into Ita/y today,
dreams of a better world and laughs at the foibles of this one, an artistic look at current
prob/ems and ajter these qreat movies you need to jind your way to our parties to share
with us the beauty and tastes of Italian culture right here in San Diego. Join us - and get

A/berto is the manaqer of a Post Ojjice in a sma// town in the northwest of Ita/y. Under
pressure from his wife Si/via, he wi// do anythinq to qet a transfer to Mi/an even qoinq

a person from the north, is a real nightmare.
Stujfed with prejudices, A/berto /eaves a/one to brave what he considers the /and of

FRIDAY
A RETROSPECTIVE
Nanni Moretti
OCT
28
SUNDAY
Nanni Moretti, writer, producer, director, actor, and
an independent artist in an industry that steam-rolls
independent artists - he is one of Italys best directors
in the /ast }, years. He has a/so scored some of the
most prestigious accolades in cinema.
Born in ip,} when wor/d cinema was beqinninq to turn toward new adventures
and to new theories of cinematic creativity and authorship, Moretti entered his
ado/escence knowinq he wanted to make ji/ms, and he p/unqed into the work and
arquments of post Wor/d War II ji/mmakers, now masters, particu/ar/y the French
nouve//e vaque. In a/most every interview with him, Moretti articu/ates the basic
princip/es of auteur ji/mmakinq He wants a ji/m to be his voice. And what a voice
it is.
By aqe zo he had /ejt forma/ education for se/f-education in ji/mmakinq,
beqinninq with Super 8 equipment. His jirst feature ji/m came in ip;. Since then
he has produced over 11 features, most with himself as the principal male lead.
Several, such as Ln stnnzn dI jIgIIo (The Son's Room), have received major
awards wor/d-wide. He has his own production company and movie theater in
Rome, where he's /ived since his birth in the A/to Adiqe.
Whi/e many critics /ike to say Moretti is Ita/y's Woody A//en, due to the existentia/
themes and bumb/inq /ead ma/e actors in most of their ji/ms, Moretti is both more
po/itica//y enqaqed, more absurdist and at times more rea/ist. His key ma/e characters
are deep/y but human/y j/awed, incompetent to hand/e /ife's vicissitudes, but
involved in circumstances that shed a wry light on both the absurdity of social and
political conditions and at the same time on the magical way his characters, and
by extension all of us, manage to not exactly meet but run blindly through lifes
cha//enqes. Moretti's wry humor, never mean, never cheap, a/ways i//uminates
and makes hopeful our possibilities for getting through all these problems.
The SDIFF has se/ected three of his ji/ms Caro diario (1993), Il caimano
(2006), Habemus Papam (2011) - to give an idea of the range and power
of his voice, and while perhaps not enough to give a historical overview of this
master, they will still give us a good sense of not only the stories he likes to tell
but the voice he uses to endear his work to cinema lovers all over the globe.

FILM + RETROSPECTIVE
Nanni Moretti writes, directs and stars in this whimsica/ journey
of se/f-discovery. Moretti qained internationa/ attention in ipp,
when this ji/m won the Best Director award at Cannes. The ji/m
is presented in three chapters: In Vespa, Islands, and Doctors.
These "diary entries" serve as an out/et for Moretti's interna/
journey and se/f-rea/izations of Ita/ian cu/ture. Moretti exp/ores
Italy both inside and out, through the winding streets of Rome to
the Aeo/ian Is/ands to the frustrations of an imperfect medica/
system. He uses rea/ /ocations and exp/ores socia/ and po/itica/
issues to create a postmodern twist on Italian Neorealism.
This ji/m is the perfect combination of comedy, rea/ity, rhythm
and poetry and gives us a director focused on celebrating the
pleasures of life while acknowledging its burdens and giving us
hope for the future.

A punqent portrait of a jishinq community on the is/and of
Lampedusa (ojf the western coast of Sici/y), Respiro is set in
the present but evokes a primitive existence that really hasnt
chanqed much over the /ast ha/f century. The main character,
Grazia (Va/eria Go/ino), is a beautifu/ but emotiona//y
unstab/e jisherman's wife and the mother of three her wi/d
mood swings and erratic behavior begin to rankle the town
and to precipitate domestic havoc. When her fami/y and

to connect with as many people as could be reached.

to the unique insights and perspective given in an introduction to each movie by
one of the SDIFF directors or guests, each of whom brings their own history and
Italian expertise to the SDIFF.
While many festivals celebrate movies, or celebrities, the San Diego Italian Film
Festival celebrates culture a special culture that turns heads all over the world.
