TIME Magazine and Anthony Giddens, author of The Third Way and 5th most quoted person in the world of humanities. We have a particularly strong representation from the business world this term. The global heads of two leading management consultancies, Bain and McKinsey, will visit us within the space of one week. You will also listen to the famous homeless billionaire Nicolas Berggruen, the Winklevoss twins who were featured in the movie The Social Network and Sir Martin Sorrell of WPP in our Chamber. As the first President from the East Asia region, I am very eager to provide our members with different perspectives and new ideas about the great social, economic and political issues of China and East Asia. As the region ascends economically, I hope the speakers and the debate that Ive organised will help demystify the region and play a small part in reducing tension and misunderstandings. I have organised a debate with renowned experts on the rise of China, and speakers such as Nicolas Berggruen, Lord Giddens, Lord Patten, Dambisa Moyo, Sir Martin Sorrell, Dominic Barton and Martin Jacques will offer their thoughts on the East Asian region as part of their speeches. However, the Union is about much more than speakers and debates. Oxford lacked a central student venue, but over the years the Union has adopted that role and become the social hub of the University. This term our socials are bigger and better than ever before. This term alone we have organised our famous Oktoberfest, Halloween Evening, Christmas Party, U.S. Election Night Party, Last Days of Rome Social and Ann Summers Party, the latter planned exclusively for female Union members. As if that wasnt enough, there is also the absolute highlight of Michaelmas term, our Under the Sea Ball which will be held on Friday of 4th week and will transform the Union into an underwater paradise. The Union has its long history and cherished traditions, but it is equally important to keep modernising this institution. To that end, previous presidents, committees and our media partners, Oxford Media Associates, have been working on a new digital strategy that is now ready to be launched. Starting this term, highlights of all our debates and some of our speaker events will be broadcast on-line our YouTube Channel. As I write, negotiations are underway to bring Union debates to the widest possible audience around the world. I would like to thank the Unions Senior Treasurer and Bursar for their ongoing work, and I am immensely proud to be the first President to usher in these changes. Youll no doubt see cameras and lights around the buildings capturing the unparalleled quality of the debaters and speakers visiting the Union in the upcoming weeks and months. I came to Oxford from a local school in Seoul and know how daunting and alien Oxfords institutions can seem. Indeed, I remember that it was with a certain degree of hesitation and trepidation that I set foot in the Union for the first time and I am determined to ensure that it is a place that is relevant, accessible and accountable to all Oxford students. Above all, I want you to remember that this is your Union, run for you alone. Dear Members, For many of you this will be your first term at Oxford, and we sincerely hope it will be the most exciting eight weeks of your life. It will hopefully be as exciting for those of you returning. As a South Korean student who arrived here only a few years ago from Seoul, I wasnt the most obvious choice for President of the Union, but I do hope that the term that my committee and I have prepared can offer something truly exceptional for everyone. The Oxford Union was founded 189 years ago as a society to be run exclusively by the students, for the students. Central to its ethos was the need to defend and uphold the principles of free speech, principles that were being severely challenged by the contemporary university authorities. Debating lies at the heart of the Union, and I have tried to select motions that are highly relevant and significant to todays world. You start by watching our No Confidence debate in which the Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats, the Attorney General and the Minister of State for Police and Criminal Justice defend the Governments record against the Shadow Immigration Minister, a key figure from the New Labour era and arguably the best living British political diarist of our time. You can then hear Professor Grayling argue for the rights of individuals to decide the timing and manner of their death, and he might be joined by Bob Latimer, the famous farmer who was convicted of the second-degree murder of his daughter, inspiring Ozzy Osbornes song Latimers Mercy. You get to see two of the most prominent heads of Oxford colleges cross swords with each other on the fairness of Oxford admissions, witness the key foreign policy advisor to both Thatcher and Major and Her Majestys former Ambassador to China clash on the rise of China, and listen to the radical intellectual who coined the Occupy catchphrase, We are the 99%, challenge the former head of Lehman Brothers and the managing director of Goldman Sachs. For our debate on growth and innovation, you enjoy the rare joint appearance of Garry Kasparov, arguably the greatest chess player in history, and Peter Theil, the co-founder of Paypal and the first outside investor in Facebook. Our speaker line-up continues to be something that other student societies in Oxford, Britain and across the world can only dream of matching. This term, especially, you will be amazed by the quality, quantity and diversity of our speakers. We have fascinating, high-profile speakers and performers ready for you pretty much every single day of the term (sometimes even two or three a day!). You will not only meet major domestic political and media figures, including George Galloway, Andrew Marr, Max Clifford, Lord Ashdown and Lord Patten, but also international statesmen like the former Prime Minister of Sudan, the former U.S. Attorney General under Bush and the former President of Finland, who also received a Nobel Peace Prize for his indispensable role in securing Kosovos independence. Celebrities such as Lionel Richie, Michael Sheen, Sir Patrick Stewart, Charlotte Church and many others will be speaking in our Chamber, not to mention two London Olympic Gold Medallists. I also focused on bringing top intellectuals and people from the business world this term. We are hosting the prominent economist Dambisa Moyo, the 37th most influential person in the world according to

PROPOSITION
Current Shadow Minister for Borders and Immigration and former Anglican priest, Mr Bryant has previously served as the Labour Partys UnderSecretary of State for the Foreign Office and as Deputy Leader of the House of Commons. An academic and journalist at the Financial Times and The Observer, Lord Adonis is a former Labour Politician who served as Minister for Schools and Transport Secretary under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats and one of the partys longest serving MPs, Simon Hughes was first elected to Parliament in 1983. As the former President of the Liberal Democrats, Mr Hughes came third in the 2006 leadership election behind Sir Menzies Campbell and Chris Huhne.

A former President of the Union and vice chairman of what is now Conservative Future, Damian Green worked as a financial journalist at the BBC and as a TV presenter on Channel 4s Business Daily programme before becoming a Conservative MP in 1997. He is currently Minister of State for Police and Criminal Justice.
Famous for his published diaries which became the central text for understanding the Blair years, Mr Mullin served as a Labour MP from 1987-2010. During his time in the Commons he worked as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State and Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the Foreign Office.

THIS HOUSE WOULD LEGALISE ASSISTED DYING

PROPOSITION
Well-known philosopher and founder of the New College of Humanities, a private undergraduate college in London, Professor Grayling notably lent his services to Mrs Diane Pretty, who suffered from Motor Neurone Disease, in her court appeal to be granted assisted suicide on account of her degenerative disease. One of the few MPs in Parliament to support discussion of the legalisation of euthanasia, Mr Ottaway secured parliamentary time for a full debate on the subject earlier this year and hopes that this debate will provoke the Government to consider further action on assisted suicide. A former Liberal MP known for his strongly Pro-Life position on abortion and a key campaigner against the Labour Governments 2008 Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill, Lord Alton has consistently spokem out against assisted suicide and is the author of Euthanasia: Getting To The Heart of The Matter.

Former Medical Director of the United Nations, Mr Irwin has long supported assisted suicide, serving in the past as President and Director of the World Federation of Right to Die Societies and chairing the British Voluntary Euthanasia Society (now called Dignity in Dying).
A Canadian canola and wheat farmer, Bob Latimer was convicted of seconddegree murder in the death of his daughter Tracy. He has been granted full parole since December 2010. Ozzy Osbourne relates the Latimer case in his song Latimers Mercy from the album Scream.

PROPOSITION
Having attacked the Oxford admissions system last year for its terrible snobbery, Baroness Kennedy is Principal of Mansfield College. A Labour Peer and a notable academic, Baroness Kennedy is also a former Chancellor of Oxford Brookes University and SOAS. COO of UK charity Teach First, which seeks to tackle the problem of educational disadvantage in the UK, Mr Colenutt is a former economics teacher and graduate from Balliol College. Christopher Lewis has been the Dean of Christ Church since 2003. He was trained in Corpus Christi, Cambridge, for priesthood and has previously served in the Royal Navy.
Toby Young is a journalist and the co-founder of West London Free School. He was admitted into Oxford having been sent an acceptance letter by mistake, and went on to gain a First in PPE.

Son of former Labour Cabinet Minister and Acting Deputy Leader Jack Straw, Will Straw is co-founder of the blog Left Foot Forward, which has risen to the forefront of centre-left thought since its launch in 2009. Mr Straw left his post as editor of the blog in 2010 to become a leading economist at a thinktank, the Institute of Public Policy Research.
William Richardson is the General Secretary of the Headmasters and Headmistresses Conference, which is a professional association of the heads of many of the worlds leading independent schools.

PROPOSITION
A Professor of journalism at Kingston University, Mr Cathcart was a founder of the Hacked Off campaign and has also advised the Commons Media Select Committee. He currently writes for The Guardian and has published books about the murders of Stephen Lawrence and Jill Dando. A trustee of the media ethics charity MediaWise, Mr Greenslade blogs for The Guardian and writes a weekly column for the London Evening Standard. Mr Greenslade also sits on the board of the British Journalism Review and broadcasts regularly on media matters. Mr Crick is chief political correspondent at Channel 4 News, having previously served as political editor of Newsnight from 2007 to 2011. An alumnus of New College, Mr Crick also edited The Cherwell newspaper and was President of the Union in 1979.
The first female General Secretary of the National Union of Journalists, Michelle Stanistreet gave evidence to the Leveson Inquiry in her official capacity last year, noting that putting your head above the parapet and speaking out publicly is simply not an option for many journalists.

Described by legalweek.com as the legal scourge of phone hacking, Mr Lewis has worked on some of the most high-profile cases of the scandal, and has represented the parents of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler as well as the Chief Executive of the Professional Footballers Association, Gordon Taylor.
A documentary maker and managing director of the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, Mr Overton has also worked for the BBC and ITN. Mr Overton has received international recognition for his work, including two awards from Amnesty International.

Currently Professor of Mathematics and Philosophy at Oxford, Mr Lennox participated in numerous publicised debates against the likes of Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins. The Spectator called his debate against Dawkins Huxley-Wilberforce, Round Two. A former atheist who is now a member of the Church of England, Mr Hitchens is the author of The Rage Against God: How Atheism Led Me to Faith. He debated on God with his brother Christopher in 2010 at the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life. Gilbert Ryle Fellow and tutor in Philosophy at Hertford College, Mr Millican is known best for his research on philosopher David Hume and is a well-known atheist. He is also an International Correspondence Chess Grandmaster and computer programmer.
A former Christian preacher for nineteen years, Mr Barker is now an atheist and co-president of the Freedom From Religion Foundation. He also co-hosts Freethought Radio which is the first ever in-city atheist television broadcast to be picked up by Air America.

Former Private Secretary to both Margaret Thatcher and John Major and trusted foreign policy advisor to both, Lord Powell serves as the President of the China-Britain Business Council. He was a mentor to Guagua Bo, the son of controversial former Communist Party official Bo Xilai. David Camerons former Big Society tsar and the first British-born Chinese member of the House of Lords, Lord Wei is interested in the cultural and economic ties between Britain and China as well as the issues facing the British Chinese community. Master of Gonville and Caius College at the University of Cambridge, Sir Christopher was Her Majestys Ambassador to China, his final posting in a foreign office career lasting over thirty five years. He spent eighteen years working in China.

Credited for giving the Occupy Wall Street movement its catchphrase, We are the 99 %, Dr Graeber is a former anarchist academic at Yale; the University controversially declined to rehire him. Professor of African-American Studies at Princeton, Dr West has written extensively on the post-1960s civil rights movement in the USA and is a strong supporter of the Occupy Wall Street movement, referring to it as what Martin Luther King would call a revolution. As the Attorney General during the Bush Administrations War on Terror, he oversaw all activities of the Justice Department and advised on critical issues of domestic and international law. After being detained, imprisoned and tortured, Al-Mahdi went into exile to lead the opposition in 1996, but returned to Sudan in 2000. Dominic Barton, who was a Rhodes Scholar at Brasenose, is the global managing director (chief executive) of McKinsey & Company. The company is recognized as one of the most prestigious consulting firms in the world and has proportionally produced more CEOs in large-scale corporations than any other company. He is the author of China Vignettes: An Inside Look at China. Roy Hodgson is the current manager of the England national football team. A player for Crystal Palace in his teens, he became a coach aged only twenty three, first taking on the Swedish team of Halmstad. He became the England coach in 2012 and has already made many key decisions that are tipped to change the course of English footballing history. Robert Skidelsky is Emeritus Professor of Political Economy at Warwick University and the author of an acclaimed threevolume biography of John Maynard Keynes, as well as Keynes: The Return of the Master. His most recent book, written with his son Edward Skidelsky, is How Much is Enough? He is a member of the House of Lords and sits on the crossbenches. He believes that happiness is too narrow a measure of whether people are living good lives.

The tenth President of Finland, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and a speaker of five languages, Martti Ahtissari is best known for his mediation in international affairs. In his youth he was trained as a primary school teacher in Finland and joined the local YMCA, which eventually led to his job in training teachers in Pakistan, sparking his interest in international matters. After his presidency, he became a UN Special Envoy at the Kosovo status process negotiations, aimed at resolving the long-running dispute over Kosovo, which had declared its independence from Serbia. In 2008, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts on several continents and over more than three decades, to resolve international conflicts. The Nobel statement said that Ahtisaari has played a prominent role in resolving many conflicts in Namibia, Indonesia, Kosovo and Iraq, among other areas. He will hold a master-class on international mediation and diplomacy.

Sir Patrick Stewart is one of Britains most distinguished screen and stage actors of all time. Achieving cult status through his role as Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek, he has gone on to play a host of famous characters, most notably Professor X in the X-Men films. He is a veteran stage player and one of Britains great Shakespearean thespians, bringing Claudius, Othello and Macbeth to life. He has shown incredible versatility in one man shows, accruing countless major awards for his performances and productions. Voted as the best dramatic TV actor of the 1980s, Stewart has appeared in shows as diverse as Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, Extras and Family Guy. He has a vast array of voice credits for video games, animated films and narration, recently narrating Ted.

THE UNION BAR

T
he Bar is one of the biggest attractions of the Union. Boasting some of the cheapest drinks in Oxford, with pints for as little as 1.50, the Bar is a fantastic central venue to meet friends from other colleges, whether for a light lunch or early-evening cocktails. The Bar offers food and snacks as well as coffee, tea and soft and alcoholic beverages throughout the day. This Michaelmas we have launched a number of new initiatives in the Bar:

As well as the Main Library, the Poetry Room, Goodman Library and Gladstone Room house an extensive list of fiction, academic and political texts. Read a book or relax with a drink in the Victorian splendour of these wonderful rooms.
Located in the cellars of the Union, the Purple Turtle is the most central student club in Oxford. When Michael Heseltine was President in 1954, he had the coal cellars converted into a bar and music venue. Entry is free to all Union members and the PT is open Mon-Sat until 3am, providing members with the cheapest late-night venue in town.

FOREWORD
The library is yours structured in a way which best reflects the diversity of disciplines studied at the University and situated in the centre of a bustling collegiate university. It is begging to be used by its members, whether as a port of call whenever college libraries do not have a particular title, or as a quiet place of work. Boasting an extensive collection of academic resources and also fiction, travel and a selection of newspapers and magazines, the library aims to fulfil all the possible interests of its membership.
AFTERWORD
Though it is difficult to satisfy all of the people, all of the time, we are genuinely conscious of a deep obligation to the members whose membership fees provide a substantial part of the librarys funding. As such, we are always receptive to suggestions and criticism, the reason why we keep a comment book for you to write in. Alternatively, we welcome any input at Library Committee, which meets once a week to discuss, amongst other things, book and DVD requests. I am also conscious of the fact that the Junior Librarian is ultimately judged on speakers brought to the society, and this term I will be hosting a diverse range of speakers, including: Ambassador Susman, Lionel Richie, Professor Michael Oppenheimer, Ray Winstone, Roy Hodgson, and Michael Sheen. We are also still in negotiation with numerous other speakers, and I will update you of the progress of these negotiations through our mailing list and on Facebook. THE OLD LIBRARY

The central part of the Oxford Unions library, the Old Library, is a tranquil venue where members may work beneath beautiful Pre-Raphaelite murals by the likes of Morris, Rossetti, and Burne-Jones. It remains one of Oxfords most extensive lending libraries, with members having the option of borrowing books for fourteen days at a time. In addition, we stock DVDs as suggested by you, at modest lending prices. THE GOODMAN LIBRARY

Housing an outstanding collection of academic periodicals, for the sciences and humanities, the Goodman Library is a worthy supplement to the Old Library. With opening hours longer than the Bodleian, it is a welcome resource.

Dear Members, Whether you are returning to Oxford or are here for the very first time, I hope you are well rested and ready for what looks to be a fantastic Michaelmas term. My team and I have been hard at work here over the summer vacation, raising essential funds and organising a diverse range of events. I have tried to raise as much revenue as possible by procuring advertising for this termcard, raising sponsorship for debates and other events, and by coming up with some new ideas. Perhaps most exciting of these is a new series of eight events sponsored by TARGETjobs. The series includes visits by Max Clifford, Lord Adonis and Andrew Marr, as well as the Oxford Fashion Week castings, and the Can Oxford Women Have It All? forum, which I have organised in conjunction with OUSU. The series will run into Hilary term. I have also arranged a discussion forum about tuition fees and social mobility for Wednesday of 5th week in association with the Sutton Trust. To top it all off, there will be a panel forum at 3pm on the day of the U.S. Presidential Election, featuring top academics as well as representatives from Democrats Abroad and Republicans Abroad. This will be followed by an extravagant election social the same evening. Expect beer, big screens and burgers late into the night. The Oxford IV 2012 Our flagship inter-varsity tournament, drawing 140 teams from as far away as Melbourne, Tokyo and California. The Clifford Chance Oxford Schools Debating Competition The worlds largest debating competition for school children. The BarCap Oxford Womens Open. Britains first, and literally the only, all-female debating competition, which the Union started 3 years ago to improve access to debating for women. The International Competition for Young Debaters regional round. The national championships for Under-15s, run by a consortium of universities across the UK, and this year centrally convened by Oxford.

The Oxford Union offers an unrivalled range of opportunities, but it remains true to its heritage as one of the worlds oldest and most successful debating societies. In the last academic year, the Union were the English champions, European and World Finalists and the top speaker in the world was from the Oxford Union. Oxford have one the European championships seven times in its 14-year history (no other university has won more than once), and have reached the Grand Final of the World Championships six years running (again, something no other university has ever achieved), winning worlds in 2008 and 2009. The Oxford Union is the worlds most successful debating society and debating in Oxford is incredibly exciting, as well as being great fun.

EXTERNAL TOURNAMENTS
The Union selects and pays for squads to attend inter-varsity tournaments all over Britain, and also to the World and European Championships, which gives opportunities for lots of exotic foreign travel (not that trips to York for debating arent exciting!). There are usually a couple of tournaments every weekend, and every squad the Oxford Union sends contains at least 25% novices, so dont worry about lacking experience. In addition, trials for Worlds, which takes place over the Christmas vac (this year in Berlin), will be held at the beginning of 3rd week; information will be sent out soon. Trials for Euros in Manchester (next Summer) will be held in Trinity term.
DEBATERS DRINKS
On Sunday of Freshers Week, October 7th, we will be running an introductory evening to show you what competitive debating is all about. Eight of the worlds best debaters will show you a master-class in debating, and there will also be talks about all of the ways you can get involved. The evening is being generously sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers, and afterwards there will be drinks and snacks (free booze is a very important part of universities debating).
To enable us to have all of these amazing opportunities, the Oxford Union runs a mammoth 5 external tournaments this year: All of these tournaments require volunteers and Organising Committees. Being involved looks great on your CV, and is looked on very favourably during selection for external tournaments. Every Sunday evening thereafter, at 6.30pm in the Goodman Library, we run an extensive weekly coaching programme, ranging from the basics of parliamentary debating (for those whove never done it before), to advanced sessions on strategy and specialist knowledge, given by former World and European Champions. Afterwards, there are internal competitions to put the skills youve learnt into practice, so do come along!

The Oxford Union is committed to improving Access and Equality in Oxford University. We are therefore proud to be running our Change Through Debate scheme this term, where the brightest debaters from schools all over the country will be invited to participate in afternoon workshops led by world-famous debaters, before attending a debate in the evening. This term, there is a substantial reduction of membership fees for new members in receipt of a full government maintenance grant, marking real value for money and affordability: a price of 130 (117 during the Unions Freshers Fortnight).

Made up of Oxfords best debaters, its primary duty is to select members to represent the Union at debating competitions. It also organises internal competitions and promotes debating in Oxford.

Qualifying Speeches To run for any position, you need to qualify by speaking in the Chamber during a debate. For Secretarys Committee you must have made TWO speeches, at least one of which is in the term in which you are running. For Standing Committee or for Office, you must have made FOUR speeches. Speeches must be made on different nights, and can be made in any of the main debates, the Emergency Debate, or the After-Debate. Nominations Nominations are open between 9.30am, Friday 5th Week, and 3pm, Friday 6th Week. Nomination forms can be picked up from the General Office and contain all the information you will need to nominate. Help Out Before the election, candidates must help the Returning Officer by distributing manifesto booklets in college pidges and putting posters up in colleges. Vote! Words cant really express how fortunate I feel to be in this position to write down my thanks to those of you who made it possible. It sounds like a clich, but I definitely couldnt have done this without you. There were various stages (even after the election!) at which other people tried to stop this happening and I wanted to give up, but I was fortunate enough to have those of you who put faith in me. I can never repay what you have done, and I hope my thanks and the programme I have put together serve this end a little. Team Lee/DUrso/Poon: Probably the best team I can ever dream of. Building this team together was probably one of the most amazing experiences of my life, and I cant honestly ask for a better team. Joey and Jocelyn: You cant really deny the fact that the three of us make a fantastic trio. From our first meeting in Mitre with my red notebook, strategising during breakfasts (sorry for waking up late, occasionally) and intense three-way conversations on Whats App, Skype and Googledoc to our final celebration at the Turf. I will never forget those moments. Jocelyn: I have to admit that I coffeed (annoyed) you pretty much 10 hours a day during the winter vac, but it worked! I know how hard it was to give it a go when you told everyone that your standing election is your last-ever election, and I am profoundly grateful for that. Also thanks so much for being emotionally generous and forgiving of me, and we will hopefully chill together like last Michaelmas. Joey: I am so thankful that you went against the advice of important people around you to join my team. Your sarcasm and Jocelyns cheerfulness really brings out a perfect balance among three of us. I will rely on you this term just as I did during the campaign. Its your turn now, and you know what it takes. Parit: Hopefully I can take some credit for alluring you into the Union; but seriously what an achievement!! Invite me to Thailand when you inevitably reach 1 billion likes on your fan page and become an even bigger celebrity (Thai PM? Your opponent last term said he can do it here in the UK. Why not you, back in Thailand? lol) Helen: One day you will appreciate my sense of humor and start impersonating me more convincingly. Please improve your WHAT??(You are quite good at mimicking Maria though.) I am looking forward to that roller disco and surreal fishes flying safely up in the air. Ollie: Thanks for trusting me and giving it another shot. I am so glad that you offered to become my Chief of Staff, and we will have a fantastic term together. Jamie: We never got around to watching movies together, but I hope I can see more of you this term. Polina: We failed to get Noam Chomsky, but I think we should pride ourselves in getting a fair number of intellectuals and left-wing politicians like Cornel West (love his hair) and our man GEORGE GALLOWAY!! Arent you excited? lol Liz: I still cant forget our unusual first coffee. It was definitely a good way to start learning about each other. Thanks so much for sorting out 1.5 debates this term. Charlie: Do you understand how shocked I was when I found out you were the nephew of Alexander the Great? Really sorry about what happened to him. Its really weird how we never hackchat although we met in the Union context. Looking forward to more meals in Chiang Mai with you and Aidan! Will: Still remember the DMC we had as we walked around the city on the night of election last term. You will certainly go down as the best CCC in history, and I am so lucky to have the CCC like you when I am going to have a mental term with the membership drive and a flood of speakers. Richard: You are so multi-talented, and I am sure you will fill your time with other exciting things. Thanks for covering 1st years! Michael: Best of luck for your term as president of IR Soc. Please dont try to beat our speaker line-up. Bernardo: . . Plato: Really looking forward to the APS events you will put on this term. Please get Tang Wei. Miles: I know it was hard to go for seccies as a second-year. Thanks so much for giving it a shot. Reeva: Glad that you enjoyed Good Will Hunting. Please become a therapist! Post-election Team: My battle for presidency didnt end on the 2nd of March like it does for other presidents. It merely began with the constant pressure from my college to relinquish my presidency. The process was much longer and more excruciating than I expected, and it was finally resolved about five months after my election victory. Those sleepless nights would have been even more distressful were it not for your company and support. I cant imagine how I could have overcome this hell-like situation without you. Ash: I think you must go in this section of my thanks. You are probably one of the special few people who knew inside out what was going on with me for those five months following my election. Frankly, with virtually no Union establishment backing, you were the only ex-Hack I could rely on for political advice, and I cant express how thankful I am for taking all my panic phone calls, calming me down, and teaching me the best course of action, not only during the campaign period, but during my battle with college after the election. Political or even life mentor is the only word I can find to describe your role until now. Thanks so much, and I wish you all the best with the sick projects that you havent unveiled to me yet. I know you will undoubtedly make those happen. Lord Alton: David, my mind still boggles at the concept of having a close 61-year-old friend (particularly a well-respected senior politician). This is not something a 21-year-old student from a strong hierarchical Confucian culture is used to. Thanks so much for responding to all my panic e-mails with beautiful quotes. I have learned so much from you, and I will do my best to make you proud in the future. I dream of distant future in which we can work together for peace in the Korean peninsula. Looking forward to your stunning performance in our assisted dying debate and may our friendship last forever. Professor Millican: I still cant understand why you helped me out so much when I was such a poor student. I have nothing to say other than thank you and pledge my utmost commitment to my academic work when I return. (Maybe even a first? I know you are laughing but we shall see.) I am sure your opponents in the God debate will be easier than William Lane Craig. Baroness Kennedy: I couldnt hold back tears when you looked me in the eye and said those touching words at Mansfield. You went all out when you didnt have to. Will do my best to make you proud, but I think you are too busy to be my British Mom. Haha. I know you will absolutely dominate at our admissions debate. (Oh, by the way, its one year now instead of two!) Grace: its undeniable that you were my mom in America. I thank my auntie and you for all your prayer. : . . . . : . . . My Committee: Such a top-notch team! The term weve put together is close to my dream scenario, and I really couldnt have done this without your help. This upcoming Michaelmas term will be insanely busy with the membership drive, debates and speakers. (We sometimes have three speakers a day! Maybe Ive been too greedy about putting on events) However, I can assure you that Michaelmas is the best term to work for the Union, and I really would like to get to know all of you well throughout the term. Rajiv: Unfortunate that weve been on the opposing sides after our seccie election, but you know you were my favourite fellow seccie in Ashs slate. Hope to see more of that chemistry during the term and genuinely excited about your speakers. Starkey: Thanks so much for your advice. Why are Taylor Swift, Vera Wang and others visiting the Union in your term? Disappointing Basil: Such a sick hack. You should definitely go for it. You have my endorsement xx. Frost: We make a great duo down in the PT, and we shall dominate there during the term in our lonely nights. We even put Mutch into much shame in the PT. Sachin: Thanks for your amazing blurbs. Lets dance Gangnam Style if Psy visits in November. Ben: Sterling work on the admissions debate! Isabelle: With the addition of Latimer, your debate has the potential to even attract international press. Well done! Krishan: Your help on No Con was indispensable. Look at our stunning line-up. You really went beyond your remit this vac, and you were genuinely the hardest-working seccie. Noah: I was so disappointed when you couldnt run with me, but what a surprise, you are one of my seccies! Sam: We shall have more of those chats on political and other intellectual matters. Mike: Such a shame that Clinton is not responding to our Gladstone Lecture proposal. I think he got bit too arrogant after his speech at the DNC. Jane: You and my friend Audrey are like best friends now. Aleks: Tell me all about Greece. Leon: Hopefully will get to know you more during the term. Union - Maria: I am so glad that you are my Pres-elect! It was definitely worth staying up all night together in Christ Church. Your support in the
middle of my campaign was indispensable. Looking forward to more of our philosophical meals in Liason and Chiang Mai, and glad we overcame the days of LE***AN. Westbury: There was no way I could have gotten involved in the Union without you, and I give you entire credit for this. Thanks so much for taking care of me up until now. I only pray that I can be as good as you in my Michaelmas presidency, although that seems near impossible. Cyrus: You taught me how to hack, how to run a campaign, and you were there for me even after you left the Union. I tried to follow every little single small piece of advice you gave me; the one that you gave me a week before the election at 3:00 am in your Exeter room was especially invaluable. Looking forward to coffeeing Dominic Barton together. Seb: Probably the most principled person Ive encountered in the Union. Very rare quality around here. Thanks for going all out for me when you didnt have to, and please go dominate in the very first and most important debate of the year. Ali: My ex-housemate, I am very sorry that Ive been quite distant in Trinity. I will explain all the shit that happened, but thanks for always being so warm. You will definitely find a good Persian girl. Barney: You and Seb were amazing in 7th week. Oh, the good old days when we were seccies. I will check whether you actually leave banking for a more altruistic job in three years time. Langman: Dear my first Union boss, The Right Honourable Margaret Beckett rejected my invitation for No Con. What a shameDrop by the Union to see your boss Orit Gadiesh. Kevin: Glad you are my GLO this term, and I hope that our meal at Shanghai 30s cleared our misunderstandings. Viraj: You are like my younger brother. Tell me all about your epic summer in China and Europe. JP: Thanks for all your help in turning me into Kun Gae Seung Yoon. Any help I can give with the new online media I am happy to offer. Ernst and Pringle: For showing me how it is done. Oxford - Almat: Your ability to inspire me and instill the sense of a historical mission into my campaign is unparalleled. You can easily transform me from John Lee the Pessimist into John Lee the Warrior with your motivational chat. Come down to Oxford, and we shall watch some Kim Ki-duk in the TV room. Michelle: It must have been difficult to go out with a boy obsessed with the Union, and I can only say I am sorry. It truly isnt possible to express how grateful I am to you for putting up with me throughout that whole period, and its unfortunate that Ill never be able to repay you for what youve done. Rilly: You went all out every time I need help, and how can I express my gratitude? Look at the number of roles you have taken for me - from a charming poll-room hack to my No.1 press secretary! Jason: The only East Asian ex-hack I know, and you taught me how it can be done. Dan Mac: The most peaceful moment in that week of my election was the one at which you sat me down in the Merton lawn. You managed to completely calm me down and energise me in that stressful period. Hopefully, you dont meet more crazy girls. Ejiro: Your Nigerian connection doesnt seem to have workedThanks for being generous about my hacking. Noel: I still havent given up on that Hong Kong debates plan. We will write up a proposal and show it to every single businessman we meet during the term, from the homeless billionaire to Sir David Tang. I am really grateful that you and the rest of HK Soc turned out for me every single time. Xiaoyue: for your pollroom hacking! Oxford Koreans: . , . Kelvin: Its such a shame that you are not here with me in my office, and you deserve far better. I have a feeling that we will be even closer now that I am in your year! You are the one person, besides Ash, who knew everything that was going on after the election. Good luck with the girl! Richard: You and your ability to smoothly move into serious conversations in a light-hearted way cannot be matched by anyone else. You are probably the best relationship advisor I know. Aaron: I think there may be a possibility that you are crazier and more psychotic than me. I havent really encountered such a person in the past. Please dont get offended. Lawson: I think we distanced away from each other as I went into a more serious relationship with the Union and you with Emma, but I have to say that you feel like one of my Korean mates back home. You have this special sort of loyalty that only Korean males can possess. I guess you cant really erase that inner Asianness. Emma: From the moment you woke me up 6:00 am for my seccie election to putting a Congratulations sign on my door, youve been always so supportive. Eleanoir: You are just too nice. Thanks so much for turning your friends out every time. Its a shame that I wasnt in Korea when you were there. Rosa: Rosaaaa. Thanks for your sick speech about me. You are one of the few people who had enormous impact on my life during my teenage years, and I hope we can find time to meet up every few years at least. Mr. Cirves: I found your drama lessons so helpful in my presidential campaign.
