Literacy Task I: Scholarly Discourse Engagement

For this Literacy Task, you will be engaging with three of the assigned essays. Proper engagement asks you to put them in conversation with one another (synthesis) work through a discussion of the larger point(s) in which these essays are invested (analysis) highlight the relevancy or importance of these essays (response) When working with these essays, be sure to quote and paraphrase as needed. All quotes will be cited using MLA. Include a works cited page. Sample student papers are found on D2L.

Optional Lines of Inquiry


Below are some possible lines of inquiry to take. Pick one or pick none. Use these are rough brainstorming guides and not checklists that need to be completed in their entirety. Examine and evaluate how each author describes the relationship between education or the academic community and students. Possible Inquiry Questions What assumptions does each author make about students? What assumptions does each author make about education /the academic community? What is the authors agenda or purpose in writing this article where does he or she want you to go? Examine and evaluate how each author describes the relationship between social class and education. Possible Inquiry Questions How does each author define class? What does each author omit or elide?

What value does each author place upon class? What value does each author place upon the social class necessary to have a place in the academic community or succeed at education? To what extent does each author offer multiple visions of what education is? How does this connect to the ways in which they seem to value it? Examine and evaluate how each author describes the relationship between power and educational institutions (e.g., schools and universities). Possible Inquiry Questions How does each author describe power relationships in his or her essay? How do educational institutions maintain their power according to each author? According to your selected authors, what do educational institutions value and how does that shape what they teach? In what ways do the authors hold similar stances? Differences?

Guidelines for Evaluation


In crafting successive drafts of the essay for Task I, focus on the following. These are the elements I will focus on as I evaluate your final draft. Developing a focused, argumentative claim (thesis) and articulating it clearly to your audience Working closely with the texts that you have at your disposal, especially quoting and paraphrasing from them effectively Blending information from multiple sources effectively Developing an effective organizational plan for your paper Using language and rhetorical strategies that are appropriate for your audience Highlighting the relevancy or importance of these essays Quoting or paraphrasing from and citing sources effectively using MLA
