Welcome
Im delighted to welcome you to the 7th annual Darbar Festival at the Southbank Centre. Whether youre a connoisseur or a novice to Indian classical music, youre in for a treat. Join us and discover the finest Indian classical music Festival in the world. India offers a spectacular sensory cultural experience from the sheer diversity of its people, its dazzling array of art, food, languages and its range of religions. Its no wonder that one of the greatest forms of classical music comes from the Indian subcontinent. So what makes our Festival so special? Well, we are the only Festival presenting Indias two traditions - Hindustani (north Indian) and Carnatic (south Indian) - together. From the Hindustani tradition we bring you one of Indias greatest sitar maestros, Ustad Shujaat Khan with tabla maestro Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri. Come and experience rare ragas by the khayal vocalist, Shruti Sadolikar-Katkar. Headlining from the Carnatic tradition is Indias greatest violin duo, Mysore Nagraj and Manjunath and on the fabulous veena we have maestro, Chitraveena Ravikiren. But we go beyond the big names. We go out of our way to seek out those musicians you may not have heard of but are at the top of their game. This is what our audiences tell us give them the biggest buzz. So this year, we bring to you many musicians performing for the first time in the UK. Look out for Prattyush Banerjee on sarod, Pushpraj Koshti on surbahar, Joydeep Ghosh on surshingar, Shubh Maharaj on tabla and lovers of vocal music mustnt miss Ram Deshpande Mahadeva singing khayal. In addition, Chitrangana Agle-Reshwal Indias only female pakhawaj player and Manjiri

Indian Classical Music Appreciation Course

Thurs 13 Sept
7.00pm to 8.30pm, Level 3 Function Room

The course demystifies some of those traditions and practices that are central to this most ancient of classical musical traditions. If youve always enjoyed Indian Classical Music but wished you understood more about it, then this could be just the thing for you. From the basics of raga (melody) and tala (rhythm) to the complexities of shruti (microtone) and rasa (emotional content), the course, delivered in five sessions, is run in conjunction with the Darbar Festival, the largest Indian Classical Music event in the West. Aimed at complete beginners, the course could also be useful for those with some knowledge of either Indian or European classical music. Covering instrumental as well as numerous vocal genres, the course aims to demystify some of those traditions and practices that are central to this most ancient of classical musical traditions. Tracing its journey from ancient Hindu temples through to royal courts and its arrival on international concert stages, many of the sessions will also feature live musicians to help deconstruct the numerous components that make up this highly complex and sophisticated musical culture. The course is run by Jameela Siddiqi, an award winning broadcaster, journalist, and novelist and a leading critic of Indian classical music.

We have been accustomed to hearing Dhrupad from childhood. This genre maintains its aristocracy and preserves its dignity within its wide boundaries. We have learnt two things from Dhrupad one one side we have its wide sweep, its sobriety. On the other side is its self control, maintaining a balance within its aesthetics. It is essential to have a knowledge of ancient Indian dhrupad style music- this will save us from being seduced by weak and frothy music.
