October has been declared Filipino American History Month by the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS).

The significance of the month of October was because historical evidence found that Filipinos accompanied Spanish explorers and landed in what is now California, in October 1587. Today colleges, universities, and communities celebrate and commemorate this month with various activities and events.
