Symphonys Exciting Premiere in Potsdam and Watertown Features Potsdam Community Chorus and Northern Choral Society
On Saturday, October 27, 2012, at 7:30 p.m., in Hosmer Hall, SUNY Potsdam, the Orchestra of Northern New York will open its twenty-fifth anniversary season with the exciting Beethovens Symphony No. 9. The performance will be repeated at 3:30 p.m., on Sunday, October 28, 2012, in Watertown, at the First Presbyterian Church, thanks in part to the Northern New York Community Foundation. The Orchestra will be joined by both the Potsdam Community Chorus directed by Dr. Jeffrey Francom and the Northern Choral Society directed by Sara Gleason. Soloists are Crane School of Music Faculty; Jill Pearon, Soprano, Lorraine Yarros-Sullivan, MezzoSoprano, Donald George, Tenor, and David Pittman-Jennings, Bass. Commissioned by the Philharmonic Society of London in 1817, Beethovens Symphony No. 9 received its premiere on May 7, 1824 at the Krntnertortheater in Vienna. This masterpiece is considered by many to be one of the greatest works of Western Civilization. Perhaps most recognizable is Beethovens choral setting of Freidrich von Schillers poem, Ode To Joy.
