Cruising Main
As Halloween approaches, I start thinking more and more about one thing: candy. As a kid, you get so excited about the prospect of collecting a whole pumpkin-shaped bucket of the stuff, and I think you should have the same expectation as an adult. Except now you cant go door-to-door for it. Sure, you can take a few bites from your childs stash if you take him/her trick-or-treating. This year though, I say treat yourself. Celebrate Halloween by going to the grocery store and picking out YOUR favorite candy. Its up to you whether to buy a whole bag or to get a single serving but whatever you do, indulge in something sweet. Your inner child will thank you.

Culinary Adventures Happy Halloween

A spooky but delicious twist on food.
We all know this time of year is full of candy and cavities. Who doesnt enjoy the former and dread the latter? I used to love trickor-treating so I could get those awesome mini-chocolates like Twix and Reeses. Now as Ive become older, I cant trick-or-treat anymore, and I dont have any kids in my neighborhood that trick-or-treat. What is a person to do when they want to celebrate Halloween in a different way? Thats right, celebrate with food! Its not that hard nowadays with the internet stuffed to the metaphorical brim with crafting and baking ideas for holidays yearround. I find myself wishing I had more spare time and an endless bank account to spend at Hobby Lobby. Who doesnt love a good craft project? Actually, I can think of several who dont. Like everyone I know. So maybe Im the only college student who loves crafting and baking as much as I do, but it puts me in a good place for future situations where people dont know what they should do for a celebration. Im full of useful ideas! So this Halloween is low-key. I still think celebrating is necessary, because it used to be my favorite holiday. Recipes such as stuffed jack-o-lantern bell peppers, caramel apple cake, Halloween cocktails and Halloween trail mix are perfect for this time of year! Most of these recipes are super simple to make, good for that parent or student on the go. It doesnt have to take a lot of time to make a delicious Halloween snack for school or work, and your fellow peers will never know. Ill be posting more Halloween recipes as it gets closer to the holiday on my blog and Facebook page. You can follow me on either one, and feel free to ask me about substitutions, healthier versions or suggest other creative alternatives!

Playoffs Still Possible in the Future
By ChrisJoseph
The most recent Norman High Tiger football game had the Tigers welcoming in the Edmond Santa Fe Wolves, who are loaded with many division-one athletes, and all the prognosticators, most of whom have never seen the Tigers play, all had the Wolves winning, with some of them even calling it not even a close game. Outside of the parents, players and coaches I felt as if I was the only that even gave the Tigers a chance to win. The Wolves ended up winning the game 27-21 and shouldnt have. Missed opportunities will haunt those who watched the game; three possessions that started inside the Wolves 35-yard line that resulted in no points is the big difference here. The Tigers defense hurried, pressured, knocked down and sacked the highly-touted quarterback Justice Hensen multiple times. With the first loss of the year since the opening night loss to Norman North, the Tigers are 6-2 on the year with a 4-1 record in District 6A-4. The Tigers remaining schedule has them taking on two very beatable teams in the Putnam City West Patriots and the injury-riddled Lawton Wolverines. Putnam City West will not pose a threat to the Tigers unless Norman High completely implodes. The final game of the year, Senior Night against Lawton will be tougher but still a very winnable game for the Tigers. Edmond Santa Fe has a surging Edmond Memorial and closes out with Choctaw but should have no problem getting past those two teams. That leaves a second place finish for the Tigers in district play. That would put them at home for the first round for sure and could set up a Crosstown semi-final matchup if it works out to that. The Tigers are going to be a hard out in the playoffs due to a solid offense and a very good defense. The players, coaching staff and fans are poised for a deep playoff run, and I feel they will deliver.

Three big wins in a row for the Norman North Timberwolves have them set up for the District 6A-3 Championship. In consecutive weeks the Timberwolves have downed Yukon, Edmond North, and finally Putnam City North. All three victories have been in convincing fashion. Now all that remains for the Timberwolves is games against Moore and Lawton Ike. Looking ahead to the matchup against the Moore Lions, the Timberwolves are clearly the better team. The Lions have been dealt a cruel hand with many injuries to their defense. The starting middle linebacker was hurt early in the year and so was the backup, which led to Collin Webb, the starting quarterback, to step in and play both ways. In the Lions most recent game against Edmond North, Webb suffered a mild concussion, so the offense and the defense are up in the air for first year coach Todd Waters. Moore is a team that will fight you until the last second has run off the clock so the Timberwolves had better bring the same focus they have had since their only loss to Westmoore. The Timberwolves finish up the year on November 1st at Cameron Stadium in Lawton against the Ike Eagles. This is not the same Lawton Ike that ruled Oklahoma football in the early 90s. This is a team that is not very good and should only pose a small road bump for the Timberwolves. A look back to last year it was this very game that the Timberwolves won in overtime that propelled them into the playoffs All the Timberwolves have to do is win one of the remaining two games to claim a district championship. However, the T-Wolves and Coach Standley are looking for more than just that. They want to host the first two rounds of the OSSAA state playoffs and can set that up by finishing off the year and being undefeated in district play. The Timberwolves will match up with more than likely the number-four seed from District 6A-4, which could be anyone from Lawton High, the preseason best in the west, to a surging Edmond Memorial team that has caught fire in the later part of the year and includes a big come-from-behind upset win over the Southmoore SaberCats. The good thing is, it looks like for at least the first two rounds, and the Timberwolves will be playing postseason football in Norman. There is still work to be done and this is a team that will not put the horse before the carriage. I feel they will go out and handle their business and bring home the 6A-3 title with aspirations of bringing home the gold ball in December.

Local Food Syrup. A Breakfast Boutique

A new breakfast hotspot hits Main Street.
With my tummy rumbling and my expectations high, I made my way over to Syrup at around 11:30am on the Friday before a game day, and boy was the place packed. Id heard a lot of great things about the 7am- 2pm breakfast joint that has just recently made its home on Main Street in downtown Norman. Already, the buzz about the restaurant has spread. My friend, Rebecca McNeely, recently gushed over how snazzy the food was, but how the eatery was more than just a place to get some good grub. Oh my gosh I love Syrup.! They have really awesome food, but it is extra cool because a whole bunch of their proceeds go to different charities and that is just the neatest thing, McNeely said. A lot of people I talked to dont know about it, so I guess they keep it hush hush. But it is really great, shesaid. And what was even more interesting was that the atmosphere wasnt what I was expecting. This definitely isnt a mom-n-pop store from my grandparents time. Chic and clean, the restaurant looked like a posh frozen yogurt place. Drinks were served in Mason jars, the light fixtures were down-to-earth chandeliers and there were wooden tables and floors. The vibe was relaxed and homey. With the menu, owners Jason and Ashley Kennedy kept it short and sweet with a little over a dozen items, with the majority being breakfast options. The emphasis is pancakes and waffles, but Syrup puts their own unique twist on these old favorites. From my waiter Johnnys recommendation, I tried the Morning Glory. As described on the menu, it was a waffle with cheese-covered eggs and sausage. To my surprise, the eggs and sausage were on top of the waffle. As someone who isnt really a breakfast person or an adventurous eater, I was worried. Id never seen anything quite like it. That was the point of bringing Syrup to Norman, Jason Kennedy said. I was eating breakfast at a place in South Africa, and they served a dish with the eggs and meat on top of the waffle. Then I thought there is no place in Norman that really does specialty breakfasts. So at that breakfast, my friends and I thought we should bring something like that here. Then my wife said, Can someone pass the syrup? And we all knew / Syrup would be the name of this place. Not only is the name and food different at Syrup, but so are the business practices. Kennedy and his wife donate 100% of their profits to a concept called holistically transforming global societies. It works like TOMS shoes. They pay their employees and their bills, and then the rest goes to different projects. Right now, the company is trying to fund a project to build a joint orphanage-community center-church in Rwanda. Of course, this begs the question: Why Africa? Jason Kennedy grew up in Angola and adopted a son, True from Ethiopia. Someday, he hopes to move to South Africa to live permanently. Yet while he is breathing the Nompton air, he wants to be as involved with this community as possible. There are plans for Syrup to be involved in the Norman Music Festival and Normans 2nd Friday Art Walk, both killer ways to get their name out there in a fabulous way. Speaking of fabulous, thats exactly what I thought my Morning Glory breakfast was. And I have to say, Syrup might have made a breakfast eater out of me. But if you dont trust me, or are a little bit more on the cautious side, try the best pancakes; for being gluten free, they are some of the best that I have ever had. In any case, be sure to check out syrup. at 123 East Main St. for a wonderful bite or two.

Check out these TV and film-inspired quirky character costume ideas for Halloween.
Once you get past the debacle of how much candy you should or shouldnt eat and where youre going for the post-Halloween candy sale, theres only one question thats on everyones mind these days: whats the best costume? It doesnt really matter if youre asking for yourself, your kid or your dog; most of your options are going to be pulled from pop culture or TV/movie references. Even your standard witches and ghosts pop up in our favorite films! If youre tired of pulling from the same old Superman and Frankenstein pools of costumes and dont want to have to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe, here are a few fresh ideas that might bring up some unexpected smiles without breaking the bank. Guys: Maverick from Top Gun For men, theres just not much simpler than a full khaki outfit and some slicked-back hair. If you can get someone to follow you around playing 80s music, even better! Its easy to sew on some military patches. Or, if you like, you could go with the jeans-undershirt-jacket look from his motorcycle days. If your facial hair lines up better with Goose, great! This can easily turn into a group costume if you want to form your own aircrew.

>> Chasing Mavericks Jay Moriarty sets out to surf northern Californias most dangerous wave, and on his quest to do so he forms a friendship with his mentor, a local legend, that reaches far beyond surfing. Based on a true story. Opens October 26

Gals: Cruella de Ville from 101 Dalmations Do you own black things? Do you own white things? Good! Wear them together. A simple black dress with a white scarf, shawl, wrap or sweater and some red shoes turns you into one of the creepiest, but most human, villains ever to show up in a Disney film. Get some hairspray and black and white temporary dye (or just some powder, for you raven-haired folks out there) to make the look complete. Couples: Thing 1 and Thing 2 from The Cat in the Hat You can make this as elaborate as you want, but all that you really need is a red shirt, a piece of paper, and a marker. If you want to get wild, you can throw in some red pants and blue hair dye, and maybe even fabric paint for your Thing 1 or Thing 2 sign. Everyone will smile remembering these characters. If you happen to own a full yellow outfit, but not a red, you could also pull off the Sneetches if one of you makes a green star for your belly.

Opens October 26

>> Fun Size Wren is a sassy high school senior who cant wait to get out of the house, but since her mother is off to a wild party with a new boyfriend on Halloween, Wren is left to watch her little brother Albert. When she loses track of him, she has to team up with some friends to wade through the sea of crazy trick-or-treating characters to find him again.

Groups: The Brady Bunch I know for a fact that youve got those embarrassing old clothes in your closet back home that you havent brought yourself to get rid of. If your embarrassing moments dont reach back far enough, your parents will! The good news is that theres no set outfit for thisanything from the seventies works! You just have to shuffle around whos got the closest hairstyles. So break out your floral dresses, wide-collared shirts and aprons!
Opens November 2

Of course, these are only some ideas to get you started. What were your favorite movies and TV shows as a kid? Those characters are the ones that will really make people smile (and vote for you in the costume contest), and most of them shouldnt be that hard to pull off! So, who will you be this year?
