Ricky

Ricky finds beauty in unconventional ways, contrasting with the way everyone else views perfection. He finds ordinary things/people (Angela) boring and in a sense ugly. He looks at life from a whole new perspective and enjoys natural beauty and freedom. This is shown when Lester is killed and Ricky stares at his body in awe. He finds Lesters corpse beautiful as it is completely natural and Lester is no longer trying to impress anyone and is now free from work, rules and the effort of being socially acceptable. He finds Janie beautiful as she is not very popular, confident and loud but she has quite a strong personality. She doesnt show off her body or have the conventional long blonde hair, big eyes and red lips, just like how Ricky is not your conventional teenage heart throb as he is not muscly, overly attractive (typically) and isnt on the football team, but he finds Janie interesting. He is very open and honest which is unusual for someone with his looks, personality and popularity but he has a lot of confidence of which we see build and grow throughout the film.

Darkness creates a tense mood and connotes that someone is hiding something as the scene is filled with shadows The only source of light is a spot lamp in the background. This could connote the pressure and intimidation put on Ricky and also Frank as he feels under pressure to be normal and straight and may feel intimidated by the rest of the worlds perfect lives and family.

Strict and only need the bare minimum- like in the army/navy when you have to stick to the necessities.

Ricky speaks to his father very formally, as if in the navy yes sir Frank grabs Rickys clothes to show superiority and discipline Frank- Camera angle is from below to show authority, make him look bigger, in control, mighty, strong Ricky- is sitting with his knees close to his body showing fear and self defence. Camera angle is pointing down on him to show weakness, intimidation, facial expressions show fear, anger, disappointment, crying coughing, breathlessness, lighting- room is dark apart from one light Camera pans to other side of the room after fight, showing Rickys equipment, connoting how life just carries on as normal as if nothing happened and Frank slowly walks out in a resentful manor, but we get the impression he feels he has do to what he did in order to gain respect.
